How to Study Asian Studies Abroad
Why Study Asian Studies Abroad?
If you’re keen on international business, Japan and Singapore are the best places to study Asian studies abroad. For those of you interested in human rights and law, Asian studies in Cambodia, which witnessed a brutal genocide, might be your plan. If you’re thinking Southeast Asia but worried about the alphabet at least kind of resembling ours (I mean those Chinese and Laotian characters can be intimidating), then Vietnam could be your place.
When you study Asian studies abroad, you could be part of the Thai New Year (a three-day water gun festival...!). You could spend everyday eating bibambap and gazing at the futuristic architecture of South Korea. You could take a pilgrimage between 40 Buddhist temples in India to learn about the religion, history, and cultural elements comprising each. The possibilities are all there.
We could write a novel of praise for Asian studies in Asia. In the meantime, do some further independent research!

An experience of a lifetime of memories!
August 01, 2026by: preston stuart - United StatesProgram: USAC CHINA: Shanghai-International Business Studies
My study abroad trip to Shanghai was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The city is full of energy, with an amazing mix of modern skyscrapers and rich cultural history. Every day felt like a new adventure, whether I was exploring local markets, trying authentic Chinese food, walking along the Bund, or visiting beautiful temples and gardens. One of the most rewarding parts of the trip was experiencing a different culture firsthand and meeting people from around the world. It helped me become more independent, confident, and open-minded. I also learned so much about China’s history, traditions, and daily life in a way that you simply can’t learn from a classroom.

July 29, 2026by: Phattarin Wongrattana - ThailandProgram: Learn Mandarin in China - Group Courses with XMandarin
I’ve been at the Hangzhou campus for a couple of months now and honestly, the experience is being quite practical. I started out a bit overwhelmed because the tones were really tough for me, but since the class sizes are small, you have no choice but to speak and make mistakes. I like that the teachers don't just stick to what the textbook says, but focus on how normal people actually speak on the street. example: (To give you an idea, a few days ago I was finally able to answer a delivery guy on the phone and understand what he was asking without panicking. You have to put in the work and dedicate hours to it, but you notice that the effort pays off because you see real results in your day-to-day life.)

Life Changing Experience
July 27, 2026by: Rylee Soifer - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
I graduated from high school a semester early, and the only way I wanted to spend my semester was by being abroad. I've known about Semester at Sea for around 6 years and I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. I searched up the requirements to be accepted and luckily fit all the requirements most importantly being 18, so immediately I applied. I then got an email back the next morning saying I got accepted into the program and that email brought me to tears in the middle of one of my classes. I couldn't wait to board the MV World Odyssey and embark on this journey of a lifetime. On the ship, I gained so much knowledge about different cultures and I was able to be fully immersed in them, not just sticking to the touristy things offered. Semester at Sea does an amazing job keeping the students' safety in country as a priority with having mandatory “Pre-Port meetings” the night before arriving in a country, and offering field programs which are ship run excursions with ship faculty leading them. The community on the ship was nothing I have ever experienced before. We were so close knit and it felt like I was truly in a connected, caring, and welcoming environment. I met the people I never imagined I'd connect with, and they ended up becoming the best connections I've ever made with people. Semester at Sea also helped me get out of my comfort zone which led me to have experiences I would have never imagined I'd have, best example being running a half marathon in Vigo, Spain even though I'm not a runner and have never been a runner. Semester at Sea has given me the world and the opportunity to appreciate it to its fullest. I left the ship with my passport full, but my heart is even fuller with people, memories, and connections I will forever cherish. Semester at Sea was truly the best experience I have ever had and would recommend it to anyone as it was life changing.

Best time everrrrrr in Paris
July 24, 2026by: Sylvia Brofka-Berends - United StatesProgram: Middlebury School in France
Spending five months in Paris was one of the most influential experiences I've had---Paris being the first time I have ever lived in a big city really set the bar high. I lived with a host family in the 13th arrondissement where I felt incredibly at home (with the whole city accessible through just a few metro lines) and had the opportunity to fully immerse myself in different cultures. Being able to take courses at a French institution really opened my eyes to a different country's education system, and allowed me to learn a lot while also making local friendships. Middlebury's program itself is really amazing. Having to live, study, and form relationships in a foreign language is not necessarily easy, but Midd provided tools and support needed to ensure our success. The connections that I've built, both to people and to Paris, are immeasurable.
My Chinese improved a lot
July 21, 2026by: Caleb Sapp - United StatesProgram: Learn Mandarin in China - Group Courses with XMandarin
I studied at the Hangzhou branch of Xmandarin for 10 weeks and my Chinese language level drastically improved. The school offers classes going thru real life topics you will use all the time in your daily life. My professor Teresa was amazing she was very knowledgeable and a great teacher who made everyone feel welcomed and encouraged to learn. The school also offers many outside activities that will help you learn about Chinese culture and meet more of the students.

July 16, 2026by: Breanna Gotch - United StatesMy experience studying abroad in Molise Italy was absolutely life-changing. Grazie, Breanna! Colli really is beautiful and it's such a great partnership!
Beautiful Place, Wonderful People
July 13, 2026by: Ivy Coldren - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Nepal: Himalayan and Buddhist Peoples
I'm so glad I went to Nepal for my study abroad semester. As an international studies major with a focus in religious studies, it was a great place to combine these two interests. I learned a lot about the geopolitics of the region and the fascinating religious landscape there. The highlight of the program was our excursion to Upper Mustang. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been and I had the opportunity to engage with women in several different villages, talking to them about their experiences with Buddhism. I don't think I'll ever have an experience like that again. It was also lovely to live with my host family and meet local students! They were all some of the kindest people I've met. I am also grateful for the opportunity I had in the final month of the program to intern/volunteer with a women's organization in Kathmandu. I received a warm welcome, learned about the experiences of women in Nepal, and got to know some amazing women who have been working to support women and their rights for decades. The semester was definitely not without its challenges (it's difficult to be in a place where you're clearly an outsider for so long, and I had my fair share of the classic stomach issues), but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Mateo's experience in Beijing
July 11, 2026by: Mateo Whatley - United StatesProgram: Middlebury School in Greater China
When I signed the language pledge on day one, I made a promise: only Chinese, all day, every day. Every character was a rep, every assignment a set, and I studied my way through coffee shops all over Beijing, rating each one out of five stars. My politics and business courses were taught entirely in Chinese, and my one-on-one research dug into modern dating and why so few young Chinese are having kids — answers I found by interviewing locals myself. The real growth, though, happened outside the classroom. I'd talk to anyone who would say hello — monks, aunties in the park, students in the library, a woman making tea in a Yunnan mountain village. Each conversation was a private lesson worth more than gold. I took the bullet train to Shanghai, biked around West Lake in Hangzhou, got lost in the tea mountains, played pick-up basketball with Tibetan and Uyghur students, and even talked my way into a free tour of Alibaba's headquarters after waiting at the gate for over an hour. Persistence works. By the end, my teachers said my Chinese was the most improved in the program. But the part I'll carry with me isn't a grade or a trip — it's that I loved who I was in China.
Experience of a life time!
July 10, 2026by: Xavier Bonilla - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
One of the most underrated aspect of semester at sea is the ship campus itself. Being able to live so close to your friends and just walking a few flight of stairs to your classroom and being able to sit down with your professors for lunch is such an amazing experience. It's eternal sunsets, it's endless travel stories from your friends, it's lifetime of memories. Highly recommend. One of the best decisions I made. And still day dream about this experience, still talk and travel to meet my SAS friends 4 years later.

I had the time of my life
July 10, 2026by: Zowie Jackson - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
I have not experienced anything like semester at sea before, therefore giving me a whole lot of different lenses to look at the world with. I completely enjoyed my experience and understand the importance of understanding others concerns, communication, communities, and countries. A overall wonderful experience that has changed my views as well as the way I live and who I am as a person.

Pressure makes Diamonds
July 09, 2026by: James Patterson - United StatesProgram: Middlebury College - CMRS Oxford Humanities Program
I had originally gone to the Middlebury CMRS program because I wanted to prove that I was better than anyone else; however, once I realized that there was more to Oxford than merely intelligence (after a prolonged period not going outside), this quickly fell by the wayside. To be surrounded by bookshelves that had their own horizons, maze-like streets you didn't mind getting lost within, and pubs galore to go have philosophical discussions whilst downing another Guinness, it's all a treat that I hope to take part in again. I grew as a result of the program, as I no longer feel as though I have to prove my worth to anyone. Instead, I only wish to grow as a means to become a better citizen of the world.

This was the best choice I have made
July 07, 2026by: Rhiannon Campbell - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Indonesia: Arts, Religion, & Social Change
SIT Indonesia will have you taking planes, trains, automobiles, and boats around some (though certainly not all) of Indonesia's 17000 islands. You will have lectures outside, visit renowned universities and take classes from their professors, and meet students from colleges in both Bali and Java. Most of the learning, though, happens outside of the classroom. SIT is incredibly experience-driven. Meaning, you will learn about Indonesian culture, language, and history by going to dance performances, hiking to the tops of volcanoes, and wandering the streets on "drop-off" style scavenger hunts. That is not to say you will be overwhelmed or out of your depth; you will be supported by the (amazing!) staff and spend most of your time living with a host family in a Balinese village. This program is best for those who are motivated to step outside, meet new people, and connect with every person they meet and site they visit. Over my semester with SIT, I learned to be adaptable to any situation, to build connections quickly, and to engage anyone and everyone in conversation --- be it academic, ethnographic, or personal. It was incredibly worthwhile and genuinely the best part of my college experience
I experienced a new culture and improved my education!
July 06, 2026by: Nina Pawlowski - South AfricaProgram: Learn Mandarin in China - Group Courses with XMandarin
XMandarin has been an absolute game-changer for me. I rocked up in Hangzhou a few months ago with 0 understanding of the languages and now I find myself more confident to speak or understand everyday chinese. The best part about this campus is that the classes don't feel like stuffy, boring lectures. The teachers are super energetic and push you to actually open your mouth and speak from day one, which is exactly what I needed to build my confidence. They make the grammar make sense without overwhelming you. Plus, the social side of the school is incredibly chilled. It’s a great environment to meet people, and it’s been so easy to make friends with other international students. We're always grabbing coffee after class or heading out as a group to explore the tea fields. Huge shoutout to the whole team for making learning such a fun ride. 10/10 would recommend!
Incredible experience!
July 03, 2026by: Maggie Hernandez - United StatesThe Molise Italian Studies program was a wonderful way to be immersed in the Molise region, some of the Puglia region, and Rome. By visiting some of the smaller, lesser-known areas in these regions, I got to see firsthand how people live, work, and support their communities through the activities and social work experiences. I can say I grew as a person and have a new outlook on my everyday life at home. It was evident that Italians in these regions value community and connection. I appreciated the opportunities to participate in activities at some of the agencies, such as at LAI and in Capracotta, rather than simply observing the activity. Our tour leader, Andrea, was kind, patient, organized, and knowledgeable throughout the entire trip.
Grazie, Maggie! We are so glad to hear this trip made such an impact on you, and we can't wait to hear about your plans moving forward!
So much fun!
July 02, 2026by: Alex Santoro - United StatesI had an absolutely amazing time; I made so many incredible memories that I truly won't ever forget. The friendships I made were so awesome, and the opportunities to experience true culture were life-changing. Both of my professors were absolutely wonderful, and our guide was incredible. Everyone was so amazing and truly tried their best to give us the most rewarding experience possible, and they exceeded my dreams.
Grazie, Alex!
An enriching five months in Paris!
July 02, 2026by: Molly Levitt - United StatesProgram: Middlebury School in France
I had an amazing time studying abroad with Middlebury in Paris. I decided to live with a host family, and my host mother was sweet, accomodating, and helped me improve my French a lot. I lived in Paris's 13th arrondisement, in Chinatown, and the experience of living in a part of the city I might have not thought to visit if I wasn't living there was super interesting. I loved finding hidden gems around my neighborhood and the city as a whole.Taking classes at Middlebury with the other American students was a helpful anchor to my experience as I navigated a lot of new experiences -- taking classes in my second language at a local university, traveling solo for the first time, and more.
Wonderful, meaningful trip!
July 01, 2026by: Jen McLaughlin - United StatesMyself and my colleague brought a group of ten university students on a trip with Molise, and we could not be happier! Our guides were knowledgeable and kind. Every single person we encountered along the way as we traveled was welcoming and gracious. So many laughs were shared amongst our students and the Italian community, and we never once felt as if we were not in steady, capable hands with the company. Upon returning home from Italy, we immediately arranged our next trip with Scott and Megan, and plan to continue this trip regularly to allow students to continue to experience all the amazing things our first group did.

Thank you, Jen! Looking forward to working with Wilkes again in 2027!
Abroad Dreams Come True
July 01, 2026by: Cialyn Floyd - United StatesAs a student who dreamed of going abroad for years, I never considered a trip like this would be at my fingertips. Many know that traveling abroad is a big decision because it involves location costs return of investment and with being in school of the timeline of when it’s going to happen. I decided to make my minor Hotel restaurant management sophomore year of college, but wasn’t sure of how I was still going to make my broad dream come true. Fall semester of 2024 when I was in one of my HRM studies I wondered what options there could be to study the subject abroad. That’s when I discovered the Molise Italian Studies program NAU in Italy: Economics of Gastronomy. After promptly siding up, I was introduced to a fully guided program with pre-arrival meetings that fully explained the details and necessary precautions of going abroad. Which included an itinerary of the daily activities the lessons that would be focused on and places of accommodation. All details, which transferred extremely well into the actual trip. Each lesson was fully in depth and offered different opportunities. My favorite day was probably the day we visited Di Iorio Tartufi - Italian Truffle where we learned how truffles were safely found and made into a meal. I came home with at least 5 jars!! I highly enjoyed the environment, the greenery, and absolutely the delicious assortment of truffle products. At the end of the day, this program offered me a week of excitement and verity of locations across molise. I couldn’t have asked for a better program to introduce me to the world of traveling.
Grazie, Cialyn! So glad to be a part of your HRM journey (& we dream of truffles too)!
