A Guide to Interning Abroad in Torino
Fields
Torino can lay claim to the third-largest economy in Italy and is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. As such, opportunities for internships in Torino are practically endless. Most internships in Torino can last anywhere from six weeks to six months, with the options of part-time and full-time, making it entirely possible to complete an internship while also studying abroad.
Admittedly, the internship pool is very competitive in Italy, as most Italian students are required to complete an internship (or, tirocinio) in order to graduate or to get a job. As is common with most internships throughout the world, it is difficult to find a paid internship, although some will offer a living stipend and accommodations. Some experience may be necessary, particularly when interning abroad in such a fast-paced metropolis like Torino.
Two particularly strong fields for internships in Torino are banking and international business. Both Italian and international banks have headquarters in Torino, allowing for many internship opportunities in finance. There are also a number of businesses in the city, such as Lavazza Coffee, Rai, Kappa, Martini&Rossi, and even Ferrero SpA – the wonderful people who bring you Nutella. All of these companies advertise and export domestically and internationally, providing international interns with an excellent chance to observe Italian business models at work in an international sphere.
With such a large concentration on Italy’s automobile industry located in and around the city, Torino is a hotspot for industry and engineering too. Maserati, Fiat, General Motors, Lancia, Ghia, and Fioravanti are just a few of the automobile manufacturers with offices in Torino. Not to mention Torino is also well-known for its aerospace industry. Italy’s cities tend to highlight the arts, but for those interested in science and engineering, an internship in Torino is an excellent way to learn about the industrial side of Italy’s workforce.
However, if you are interested in arts, internships in Turin are ideal for those looking to explore art history and museum curating. Aside from the city’s vast collection of galleries and museums, ranging from the Etruscans to post-modern art, Torino is also home to the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts outside of Egypt. Alongside many historical museums commemorating Italian history, the city is also brimming with internship opportunities for those students or young professionals looking to launch an international career in the art and museum world.
Travel Tips
Situated in the Piedmont (Piemonte) region of Italy, Torino holds all the grandeur of a northern Italian city with the charm of a small Italian town in its historic center. Although Torino is one of Italy’s larger cities, its population is known for its hospitality and penchant for evening socialization along the riverbanks. Throughout the week, Torino’s many grand piazzas and cafes that line the banks of the Po River come alive at night.
Families and friends alike take to the streets for an evening stroll, shopping late into the night. The easy transition into Torino also stems from the fact that the city is filled with multiple universities and large businesses, drawing thousands of students, interns, and young professionals alike to its streets and forming a very young and diverse workforce that revels in the northern Italian tradition of aperitivi: cocktails and a social hour before dinner.
Torino is also especially well-known for the arts, noticeable through the music, dance, and multiple art galleries and museums throughout the city. Even the city’s graffiti and street art puts most other art museums to shame. The other two art forms attributed to Torino include wine and chocolate production, making the city truly decadent and rich with culture…and Nutella.
The sports culture is also very prominent in the Torino lifestyle, as the city is home to one of the top soccer (futbol) teams in the world. Juventus F.C. Local soccer pride is a borderline obsession for most Italians, which offers an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself amongst other Italians and one of their greatest life passions.
Traveling in and around Torino is made easy by the ease of walking throughout the city, as well as Italy’s extensive public transportation system. On the weekends, interns can reach the Alps, France, and Switzerland within just a few hours. Other regions of Italy and the rest of Europe are easily accessible via Torino’s railway system and international airport. The city is ideally situated for travel both within Italy and throughout the rest of Europe as well.
Cost
As in most large cities, the cost of living in Torino can be high. The exchange rate from Euro to other currencies also makes living and interning in Italy challenging, but companies in Torino raise their employees’ salaries to compensate for the higher cost of living (which is a great perk if you intend to pursue a full-time job in Italy after your internship in Turin). Most internships in Torino are unpaid, but some may offer accommodation.
Overall, Italians live simply and once you learn to live like a local, you can as well. Open-air markets make for excellent grocery and clothes shopping, as the product will be both fresher and cheaper, and you’ll find designer knock-offs for almost nothing. Nearly everything in the city is within walking distance and public transportation is readily available. If you are willing to live as a local immersed in the Italian lifestyle rather than a tourist, living and interning abroad in Torino can be very affordable and manageable.
Requirements
The most common type of housing in Torino is apartments. Some internships in Turin include housing as a part of the placement package, and this may sometimes involve a homestay. However, if you are searching for accommodations on your own, there are many resources online and within the city itself that assist newcomers in finding a place to live, including websites that can connect international interns with possible roommates. Sharing an apartment with roommates is a very affordable opportunity, and a great chance to experience Italian culture more intimately by living with local Italians.
If you are interning in Italy while also studying abroad for a time period that will last longer than 90 days, you must obtain a Student Visa. If you are completing a paid internship in Torino, you may be required to obtain a Business Visa. Procuring a Visa can be a lengthy and difficult process, so be sure to start the application as early as possible.
Insider Tips
Competitive Workplace. With the nation’s recent economic recession, competition for jobs in Torino is high, particularly among young professionals. It can be difficult for non-Italians to find internships in Turin that a qualified local student or worker is capable of. However, English language skills and professional experience make foreign workers invaluable in the international market in almost any country.
A Different Lifestyle. Adjusting to the Italian way of life can require some time and effort, as the country overall moves at a much slower pace. The concept of time is flexible, so trains might be late and your Italian roommate’s invitation for “dinner at eight o’clock in the evening” might end up being at nine. However, this pace of life gives you more time to take in the sights, appreciate the country around you, and take a few more sips of that cappuccino.
Personal & Professional Growth. Being able to intern in Torino is an excellent opportunity for both personal and professional growth, expanding experiences in both arenas. The decision to live and intern in Italy is an excellent start to an international career too. Interning in Torino, a city brimming with ancient history and modern industry, can be an incredibly life-changing opportunity for you!

Visit the beautiful country of Italy!
February 22, 2022by: Rhiannna Barry - United StatesFor someone who has never been out of the US, I was definitely nervous but at the same time so excited to be going to Italy and living in a foreign country by myself. The AIP team helped me with all the process, from finding me an internship in a company in Italy, to giving me visa advice, and was always there for me through text whenever I needed help or had any concerns when I was in Italy. The internship itself was a great experience. I made new friends, I was placed in a company that basically taught me so many new skills and knowledge that I could use continuing my degree and for my future job. And of course overall Italy, is beautiful! Italy has definitely been one of the countries in my bucket list to visit so the fact that I got the chance to travel and experience Italy while doing an internship, it was amazing and I highly recommend everyone to get out of your comfort zone and start your career journey with AIP!
Fantastico!
December 15, 2021by: Elizbeth Dalton - United StatesMy internship in Italy through AIP was a very meaningful and helpful experience. While searching for internship opportunities in Asia, I stumbled upon Asia Internship Program (AIP) with the desire to conduct an internship in China or Hong Kong, but unfortunately, due to delta variant outburst, I was informed by my supervisor about my inability to travel to China or Hong Kong. There were few options provided by my coordinator that included withdrawing from the program or switching to a different program. The most recent program AIP opened up was in Italy and I was able to travel there without quarantine at all. The hosting company was amazing and I’ve managed to learn a lot through the 3 months.
Grazie Italy!
July 05, 2021by: Leo Rouillard - AustraliaI love Italy. I always have from a young age. I always loved the culture and was also where my love for football came from. So when the opportunity cam to do an internship there, I jumped at it. Not only was the internship great and process so easy due to the 24/7 assistance from AIP, I had a blast going around Italy. I even got to visit my football team's stadium! Thank you AIP!

The fellowship I did in Trieste, Italy was an amazing experience. I got to meet new people from across the US who are instead in the same career path as me. I also got to know a experience a completely different care system than the one in the US. I also got to learn about the culture in Trieste. I would definitely recommend this fellowship! My site manager was really helpful and nice. It was great to see the city through the eyes of a local. I definitely saw things and are places that I would have not see or eaten had it not been for my site manager. This fellowship helped in reaffirming my decision to go into medicine and become a doctor. I was able to shadow different doctors in different types of departments. For example, cardiology, neurology, radiology and general surgery

Program: Internship in Italy Shadow Doctors 20+ Hours/Week Jun 25, 2019 I am very very satisfied with my shadowing experience abroad in Italy. At first, I did have my concerns as the AAMC shows statistics and discourages students from SHADOWING abroad due to the risk of students being involved in medical procedures. I would like to clear this doubt for those who are interested in this fellowship as Atlantis is VERY VERY strict and abides by their policy of no physical fellow-patient interaction. Atlantis is very clear with all the rules that must be followed etc. That being said, the fellowship was incredible. I was able to shadow under general surgery, urology, and vascular surgery. All of these departments always had surgeries or patients and all the hospital staff were incredibly helpful. Though some of the hospital staff did not speak english, many if not all residents spoke english and were able to explain procedures to you if the attending surgeon was busy. Many of these doctors are incredibly well trained and have excellent english so language barrier is usually not a problem. Aside from shadowing, the weekly excursions (I don't want to spoil them if you are attending the fellowship) were very very fun. There's a lot of pictures to be taken and a lot of friendships to be made and it was quite the experience. Genova is very very scenic with mountains, beaches (mostly rocky but you can still find sandy beaches), and architecture. Genova is known for their pesto and I really really recommend you try it. The Atlantis fellowship is expensive but provides you an experience that is priceless. I was able to pay for this through fundraising, asking family members, working a part-time job, and a little bit of assistance from my parents. This really has taught me good saving/spending habits for my future. What is your advice to future travelers on this program? I highly advise future travelers to get to know the other fellows prior to the fellowship. It'll allow you to adjust much quicker.
Once in a lifetime opportunity!!

I shadowed doctors for four weeks in Rome, Italy and I had the best experience! I was able to watch so many surgeries such as an open heart, Cesarean section, etc. The employees with this program are also very helpful and seem just as excited about your experiences as you are. I would definitely recommend applying for this fellowship!

I had such a life changing experience. I not only was exposed to a new culture, I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. It was so amazing and I learned so much. I feel like this program helped me have an understanding of what its like to work at a hospital. Do it!
A memorable experience
December 01, 2017by: Eunice B - United StatesProgram: Medical Shadowing in Italy w/ #1 Pre-Health Provider
My time in Trieste, Italy with the Atlantis was definitely one for the books. Before departure the Atlantis staff made sure we were prepared and had all the information we needed for our arrival there. They sent weekly email updates and reminders and held a pre-departure conference call. When I arrived at the airport my site coordinators were there to help us get to the residence hall. The residence was a nice and safe place for us to stay, although our rooms were a bit cold at first. Everything was organized from our first day to the last one; to and from the hospital, the group dinners and the excursions. The hospital staff were also very nice and welcoming. Trieste was a new site when I interned so there was a small, somewhat expected hiccup in one department where the staff was not quite sure of our [students from US] role there but this was not a big deal. Overall my experience was one that I will always remember and look back upon with a smile. I loved Trieste, the people I met and the time I spent there. I highly recommend the Atlantis project to premed students.
An Italian adventure
November 14, 2017by: Nico Munley - United StatesProgram: Medical Shadowing in Italy w/ #1 Pre-Health Provider
I completed a 3 week fellowship over the summer of 2017. To say the least, it was an amazing experience. Not only did I better myself by shadowing foreign medicine, I also got to experience an amazing culture. Along with that, the group leaders and other students on the trip were amazing. I met so many new people that impacted me in a variety of ways. I'll forever be thankful for the new friendships and experiences I made on my fellowship. I really believe that it changed me for the better, along with opening my eyes to a bunch of new opportunities.
Clinical shadowing in Milan, Italy
August 28, 2017by: Erika - United StatesProgram: Medical Shadowing in Italy w/ #1 Pre-Health Provider
I spent a duration of five weeks abroad and a total of three weeks shadowing. I took time before hand to travel in Italy and absolutely believe that my most valuable time abroad was in the hospital during my fellowship! I am forever grateful to the Atlantis Project for this opportunity and allowing me to learn more about what I love. I was able to network with many healthcare professionals and form a strong, professional network. Atlantis includes weekly excursions that were incredible to experience and places I never would have heard of otherwise. In addition to my time as a fellow, I had a multitude of opportunities in which I genuinely learned about the culture in my host country. I will absolutely be applying for another fellowship in the future!
