Our internship placements typically fall into two categories: working on the floor or conducting research and marketing behind the scenes. Floor work includes assisting the docent in the setup and interpretation of current exhibits and galleries. This may include constructing backdrops and computer modeling. Once the exhibit is in place, you are asked to learn the history of the showcased items and share your knowledge with the visiting public. Behind-the-scenes work may include conducting original research on life histories or local historical events. This may include online research and library visits. Likewise, you may be asked to conduct interviews in the community and record knowledge that is in danger of being lost forever. This all-in-one semester begins with one month traveling Spain by train, followed by two months in Barcelona where you choose your pathway. You’ll build soft skills (communication, confidence, problem-solving), hard skills (Spanish, digital tools, cooking), and leadership abilities focused on positive impact. Choose one of three pathways: - The Internship Pathway offers full-time hands-on experience, real projects, and strong hours for future credit or professional goals. - The Entrepreneurship Pathway combines a part-time internship with entrepreneurship labs, mentorship, and Spanish classes, ending in a Shark Tank–style pitch. - The Special Interest Pathway lets you blend part-time internship, volunteering, and classes, or focus fully on volunteering plus Spanish or creative electives. This internship program focuses on understanding the marine environment, combining marine biology lessons and underwater sampling enhanced through scuba diving. We have a day-by-day calendar with many activities and training sessions to participate in ongoing projects. Responsibilities include doing fieldwork and sampling in different marine environments, using different scientific methodologies. A marine biologist and/or PADI professional instructor are always available to guide you. We provide practical, real-world experience that complements your academic knowledge. Working in the field and conducting research in marine environments help you to apply theoretical concepts to actual situations. The idea is to give you a complete experience in this field, from marine organisms and their ecosystem to their underwater sampling and analysis of data acquired through scuba diving. Marine biology is incredibly diverse, covering topics such as marine ecology, conservation, marine mammal behavior, fisheries, and more.
