A Guide to Gap Year in Panama
Popular Locations
Panama is an isthmus, connecting the very southern end of Central America to the South American continent where it borders with Colombia. With the exception of the slightly cooler highlands area, Panama experiences a steamy, tropical climate year-round. Panamanian weather can be variable, with sudden downpours common. However, rest assured that your gap year will be unspoiled by seasonal evacuations as Panama is located completely outside the hurricane belt that impacts much of the Caribbean. Destinations within Panama are reached through the relatively modern bus system or regional flights within the country.
Panama City. This modern capital of nearly a million residents sits on the Pacific Ocean entrance of the Panama Canal. Towers of steel and glass dominate the Panama City skyline, alluding to the big business conducted here in the banking, shipping, and tourism industries. However, colonial charm still abounds, tucked into famed neighborhoods such as Casco Viejo. Panama City is the center of culture, education, and transportation in the country, and offers easy access to the tropical resorts of both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.
Bocas del Toro. Colloquially known as Bocas Town, this year-round tourist destination of 13,000 residents, is located on Bocas del Toro archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. Traditional clapboard beach shacks on stilts, fantastic scuba diving, and laidback locals, make Bocas del Toro the idyllic Caribbean locale of your dreams. Accessible only by boat or plane, Bocas del Toro has relatively basic amenities, but its isolated beauty is part of the appeal.
Rural Areas. While most gap year programs in Panama are based out of Panama City or Bocas Town, opportunities do exist in rural areas. Boquete, for example, is a charming mountain community popular with expats, and also known as Panama's Eco-Adventure Capital.
Popular Activities
Whatever you are seeking in your gap year, Panama is sure to deliver. Thanks to an immense diversity of natural resources in a relatively small country, Panama gap years offer whatever cultural, educational, or adventure travel experience you can dream up!
Adventure Travel. Panama’s rich biodiversity allows gap year seekers unprecedented opportunity for adventure. Combine your gap year in Panama with an educational experience immersed in local culture, while challenging yourself with adventure sports such as scuba diving, rafting, zip-lining, jungle hiking, and wildlife photography.
Language Immersion. Spend a gap year in Panama while perfecting your Spanish language skills. Programs may combine Spanish language classes with the opportunity to volunteer in Panama. Language programs often include access to local excursions, such as snorkeling and surfing. Cultural opportunities also abound, as the rich fabric of dance, festivals, cuisine, languages, and traditions reflect the hybrid of African, Native Panamanian, and European influences.
Wilderness. Spending a gap year in Panama is a great opportunity to combine your love of travel with mastering impressive outdoor skills such as scuba diving, sailing, and canyoneering with Panama’s pristine tropical environment as the backdrop. Wilderness programs in Panama will challenge you physically and mentally while earning academic credits as well as Scuba and First Aid certifications.
Everything else you need to know about gap years in Panama
Costs. Compared to what you might be used to in North America or Europe, the cost of living in Panama will be refreshingly affordable. Although, with a growing economy and influx of expats, prices in Panama have been rising, and will likely be higher than other locations in Central America.
Your gap year in Panama costs will vary by program but expect to pay around $750/week for inclusive programs that cover food and housing. Work-stay opportunities are also available in Panama, which generally involve trading a few hours of labor at a local farm or hostel, in exchange for room and board. Make sure to start a personal FundMyTravel campaign to help you raise some cash to get you on your gap year in Panama!
Accommodations. Your accommodation will largely depend on what type of program you choose. Formal gap year programs based in town will often include communal accommodation, either in the form of a homestay or shared apartment, while camping will likely be a part of Panama adventure travel and wilderness programs. Hostels in Panama are relatively inexpensive, often under $20/night, including breakfast. Rent for a modern apartment or condo in Panama City may run $1500/month and will have amenities on par with what you’d expect to find at home; rentals in other parts of the country will cost less.
Visas. Visitors to Panama from eligible countries, including North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand do not require a visa for a stay up to 180 days. All visitors must hold a passport valid for 3 months. Work visas for internationals do exist if certain requirements are met. Check out the GoAbroad embassy directory for details regarding visa requirements.
Safety. Panama is a relatively safe country, and one of the safest in Latin America. Be wary of petty crime such as pickpockets in urban areas and always use common sense. One exception is traveling to the border region between Panama and Colombia, which is to be avoided, due to the presence of drug traffickers and rebel groups that occupy the area known as the Darien Gap.

No doubt about it, Panama’s ecological biodiversity is extraordinary. Recent studies found that the forests of Panama are even more diverse than those of the Amazon. Sloths, ocelots, jaguars, 75% of the Western Hemisphere’s migratory birds, and five species of sea turtles call Panama home. Even if you aren’t into jungle trekking you can appreciate Panama’s furry friends without stepping foot outside of the capital. The Biomuseo, designed by world-famous architect Frank Gehry, recently opened in Panama City; this extraordinary building illustrates how the geological event that created the isthmus of Panama, in fact, changed the world 2.8 million years ago.
Just as the isthmus of Panama changed the world eons ago, perhaps now it’s going to change you. This trip changed my life...
September 30, 2023by: Charlie Blake - United StatesProgram: Seamester: Transpacific, Caribbean to Tahiti - 90 Days
I took this trip on S/Y Vela in the Spring of 2023. From the minute I arrived in Antigua and got settled onto the boat, I immediately started having the best time of my life. From the experience of living on a boat, to shore excursions and being underway, I have genuinely never felt happier and more like myself. I learned so many valuable things from Marine Biology, to seamanship, the skills and attributes this program teaches you are unlike any you can find elsewhere. I highly recommend this program to everyone who wants to see the world, make a life long group of friends, and push themselves beyond their limits.
The service was fulfilling
December 17, 2019by: Isabelle I.I chose Outward Bound Costa Rica because of the unique cultural experiences they offered, as well as the variety of adventure activities. The most meaningful part of my course was doing service work in Nicaragua and playing with the kids. The service was fulfilling and working with the community around and having interactions was awesome. Through my OBCR experience, I learned that I am strong and capable of flourishing on my own away from home and I have a huge passion for travel.
Unique opportunity
January 17, 2019by: Heather CIt's such a unique opportunity to authentically experience such a beautiful country, it was the challenge and thrill of a lifetime. I learned that I'm capable of so much more than I had imagined and my love for the outdoor education grew even more.
Amazing opportunity!
January 14, 2019by: Miranda GIt's an amazing opportunity to learn more about the World, and grow as a person. Doing the service projects in Nicaragua - it was amazing to see just how much the kids and the school teachers appreciated something as simple as a mural. OBCR will push you to your limits, physically and mentally, while being the experience of a lifetime.
Comfort zone
January 13, 2019by: Sam MIt has be an opportunity to mentally re-center myself and put priorities into perspective. I'm much more mentally strong in physically stressful and challenging situations than I thought. The hike was insanely hard but pushing through each day and being able to think back to each challenge I overcame was very gratifying. i think pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and finding new things to enjoy are so important when it comes to living life and growing as a person and OBCR has helped me do that.
It has exceeded my expectations.
January 07, 2019by: Connor H - Costa RicaIt has exceeded my expectations. All of the teaching has been much more in depth than i tohught it would be and each course has gone into much more detail than I thought. The WFR has been most beneficial because it gave me the confidence to go out into the wilderness and if something goes wrong I can depend on myself to help. I've learned a TON about backcountry safety, swift water, and ropes. I've also learned how I work with different teams with different levels of understanding and personalities.
The Wilderness First Responder course and life-guarding phases has been very useful.
January 07, 2019by: Arthur H - Costa RicaThe Wilderness First Responder course and lifeguarding phases hae been very useful because both courses focus on life saving and it is beneficial for everyday use. WFR especially because there is more to know than just life saving. I hope to accomplish every certification that this school has to offer and to go back home with a better understanding with what I want to do with my life.
. I have learned a lot of skills.
January 06, 2019by: Eliza R - Costa RicaI didn't know exactly what to expect coming into the course, but so far it has been an amazing experience. I have learned a lot of skills so far through our phases. I have learned about myself that there's more in me than I give myself credit for. The river phase so far has been the most useful for me so far because it taught me a lot.
It was both challenging and beautiful.
January 06, 2019by: Mike C - Costa RicaOutwar Bound Costa Rica met all my expectations and more. It was both challenging and beautiful. The food was amazing but I think the best part was the wreck diving. I was full of life and it was a cool photo/filming opportunity. A steep learning curve, but worth it.
I loved the area for teaching lifeguarding.
January 05, 2019by: Molly L - Costa RicaI loved the area for teaching lifeguarding. Much nicer than being in a pool. The escape drill we did was great as well. All of the cultural knowledge that Jim would talk about, and of course the diving in the area was incredible. I loved Jim's enthusiasm to teach and to listen and learn from us as well. A great overall instructor. Gretchen was incredible and knew how to fit in to our group and when to take charge and when to step back and let us take charge. Both incredible people!
It was one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life.
January 05, 2019by: Christina C - Costa RicaMy experience in Panama was a once in a lifetime event. The scuba phase was awesome. It had a great balance of down time and activity. I loved the night dive. It was something I've never experienced before. It was one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life and I'm glad every diver on course was offered the same opportunity. Gretchan was an amazing instructor, both on a personal and professional level. She maintained an instructor position while treating us all like adults.
I learned to laugh again.
January 04, 2019by: Joanna J - Costa RicaIt was wet and sometimes cold but all in all I would do it again. I learned to laugh again. I learned to just let go and be free for a while. That it was ok to smile and that even if things were bad, they could be so much worse. So I learned to be myself truly and embrace the fullness of where I was in that very moment. My favourite parts were being able to experience the culture in the home stays. This gave me the chance to truly see the country for what it is and all the values the inhabitants hold.
Thanks to this course, I now know that I was born to it.
January 04, 2019by: Dustin D - Costa RicaIt surprised me that I would love the activies as much as I did. I realised my love of water. My whole life I've been afraid of and avoided playing in the water. Thanks to this course, I now know that I was born to it. I learned that I am a strong leader capable of overcoming himself to achieve goals.
The hike was absolutely amazing.
January 03, 2019by: Amos P - Costa RicaThe hike was absolutely amazing. I learned about myself physically and mentally. I experienced ways of life I've wanted for a while now. I learned outside of a classroom and felt more enjoyment for an extended time than I have in a long time. It has helped me to focus some of my life goals while still showing me my future is wide open.
I had a ton of fun.
January 03, 2019by: Joshua N - Costa RicaSometimes you have to go to a foreign country to find whats holding you back in life. I had a ton of fun, learned about a foreign culture, much improved my Spanish, and learned about myself and how I operate, all things that I hoped to get out of this course.
My experience was extremely eye-opening of the World
January 02, 2019by: Ella R - Costa RicaMy experience was extremely eye-opening of the World and revealing of my own passions for my life. I have learned to give whatever you're doing/am passionate about, 100% of your effort. I have totally noticed a change in my outlook on life. On my solo, I had time to reflect and I realised I am so much more appreciative of life's opportunities, compassionate for people, and more likely to be active. I now expect much more from myself because I know how capable I am now.
These have been some of my the best 3 months of my life
January 02, 2019by: Lucie R - Costa RicaI've noticed that my leadership skills have definitely gotten a lot stronger by having to be cacique and deal with different personalities. I have also become more confident in my ability to do whatever I put my mind to. I was suprised at how fast everything went by and I was also suprised at how mentally strong I have become. I have learnt that in life you will come across hard time but you will always come out the other side a changed person. These have been some of my the best 3 months of my life.
This experience has made me so much more self-reliant and confident.
January 01, 2019by: Amanada F - Costa RicaOutward Bound Costa Rica has openeed my eyes to a strength and confidence in my own abilities that I may never gained. Spending the past few weeks becoming healthier and pushing my physical limits really made me realize what i'm capable of and has restored a lot of my self confidence. Getting active again and living a healthy lifestyle has pushed me to believe in my own abilities for when I go home and motivated me to be successful. All of the hike meant a lot to me. This experience has made me so much more self-reliant and confident.
It has been great!
January 01, 2019by: Ruby K - Costa RicaOBCR was a challenger that I really needed. It has been great for meeting friends and being out of our comfort zones. I learned that it's ok to take them time I need for myself to re-evaluate where i'm at in life. The most meaninguful part has been seeing myself change and try to change bad habits.
Eye opening experience
December 15, 2018by: Carolyn WhippProgram: Custom Course in Costa Rica & Panama (Groups of 5+)
I really enjoyed getting to know the instructors more personally. As for the activities, I had a lot of fun doing the waterfall rappel. A very eye opening experience in terms of experiencing culture and learning to respect and understand people who are different. I learnt how people live different lives and believe different things but we all have similarities.
