Popular Locations
If we could have the time to tell you about ALL the amazing locations for gap year programs in France, we’d be here for hours. So let’s just keep it simple—here are some of the most popular locations that past gappers have fallen in love with.
Paris. A walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of life. -Thomas Jefferson
Adventurers of all shapes and sizes have loved Paris for centuries. When you’re not in class studying or working for gap year jobs in France, you’re most definitely spending your time climbing the Arc de Triomphe, falling head over heels with the Louvre museum, visiting one of the very first Gothic cathedrals, The Notre Dame, and its gargoyles, taking a scenic boat tour down the Seine, getting spooked at the Catacombs, or just relaxing with the most velvety hot chocolate and coffee at Angelina. There’s a lot to do, so it’s a good thing you will be spending a year in France!
Lyon. One of the largest renaissance quarters of Europe, Lyon offers endless opportunities for your gap year in France. You can find jobs as an English teacher, internships to help you gain professional skills, gap year volunteer projects, and courses très immersif to improve your gap year French! Much like the rest of France, there’s tons of history, culture, and food to discover here. Your gap year is all about learning stuff, right?—well, that includes learning you like to eat frog legs and snails! You’ll be a fin gourmet (foodie) in this gastronomic capital before you know it.
Popular Activities
France offers a range of opportunities for gappers to spend a whole year abroad. It’s just a matter of deciding if you want to be an au pair and live with a local family (get a real authentic feel of the French people), or give a helping hand to the older French population on a volunteer gap year. Or maybe go for one of these popular locations:
Work abroad. Gap year jobs in France span the spectrum—you can au pair, work as an English teacher, or work in hospitality. This can be the right choice for you if you’re ballin’ on a budget, or don’t want to empty your bank account while romping about on your gap year. What’s more, you can practice French, make new amis with your coworkers, and perhaps test a career path. Yup, gap year in France jobs do it all!
Language Immersion. You need to speak English or French—Frenglish is not a language. If you’re anywhere between a beginner and Frenglish level, then finding gap year language courses in France is the perfect opportunity to improve your French. We can assure you that if you’re going to spend your time practicing your conversational skills in cafés, shops, and museums all day, you will become fluent in the language of love before you know it. Three cheers for gap year French!
Internships. If you can speak a little French, want to challenge yourself, boost up your professional skills and gain professional experience, then an internship might be the right answer for you—not to mention how impressive it’s going to look on your resume! Internships are a great way to improve your French skills, most importantly at a business level, so that if you fall in love with France and ever plan to move there, you will have pas de problème finding a job.
Everything else you need to know about gap years in France
Costs. Depending on how you plan on doing your gap year in France, be it on your own or with a formal program, the costs are going to differ. With gap year programs in France, you need to budget for the program fee (check what else is included in the price!) and personal expenses while you’re there. Whether you go alone or on a program, budget for transportation costs (flights ain’t cheap) and incidentals (like a second helping of ratatouille). Stick to the local markets to strike more bargains. For only $20, you can take a break from the baguette and enjoy a three course meal of the best cuisine in the world.
The key to an affordable gap year in France? Budget early, and save a ton. Consider collecting donations from friends and family with FundMyTravel to help offset your costs.
Accommodation. If you’ve made the decision of going on formal gap year programs in France, and save yourself the headache of thinking about accommodation, lucky you! It’s very likely that accommodation is included in your program fee. For others, consider living outside of the capital to lower costs. You can rent apartments/flats, book long-term stays in guest homes or hostels, or find work exchanges.
Visas. If you are not a EU citizen, then you most likely will need a visa for a gap year in France. Formal gap year programs in France will help you with all the processes and documentation, but you can always check out our Embassy directory beforehand to ensure you’re on the right path. In general, you should only need a tourist visa, but if you plan to find gap year jobs in France, you’ll likely want/need to coordinate a work visa.
Safety. France is a relatively safe country, despise the incidents from the past few years. Now, more than ever, you should extra vigilant and aware of your surroundings, but this is a general rule no matter where you travel to. Use good judgement and trust your instincts. Don’t walk on that dark road in the middle of the night by yourself or leave belongings unattended, as petty theft is as common in France as anywhere else in the world. And most importantly, have fun, but don’t get too carried away in a foreign country, lest you become an imbécile.
GoAbroad's Inside Scoop
It’s expected to experience culture shock when you get to France, but we are here to give you some real life French insight so you won’t be so taken toooo far aback.
The first and hardest thing to get used to, especially if you’re a person who loves their own personal space, is the way the French people greet. It is natural and appropriate to kiss someone that you just met on the cheek. Twice. It will be awkward at first, and you will always be stressed out about putting on perfume and having fresh breath. But, fear not—it normalizes quickly and honestly, you should probably carry mints and deodorant anyway. ;-)
The French love their bread. We repeat: The French love their bread. The breadbasket is an essential item on the dinner table and will be refilled with fresh bread at every meal. Cheese is also very sacred here, and can even be served as a dessert option. No, France isn’t heaven on earth. But it’s pretty darn close.
If you’re coming from the States, or a country where some stores are open 24/7 or until midnight, you will be surprised to see that business hours in France are very different, with a two-hour lunch break in between. Here’s to planning ahead!
If there’s a country out there that can turn any bright-eyed young person into a travel addict and lifelong global citizen, that is without a doubt France. After a gap year in this remarkable country, your return home will be bittersweet, but you will be a different, better and more experienced person. Make a change in your life and future and take a gap year in France today!
Keep reading! Take a year off after high school! But seriously.

DO NOT MISS OUT!!!!
April 19, 2026by: Esther Amani - KenyaProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
SAS as a recent high school graduate was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I am so grateful for the opportunity to sail on the Fall 25 voyage as an international gap year student. The experience as a whole was so unique and I truly do not believe that you can find such a program anywhere else. The accommodation was so surreal because I got to wake up and see the waves as we sailed across the world. The community SAS builds is welcoming and kind because whenever I had a problem on the ship or in port, I never once felt alone or stranded. There will always be someone in your corner, which I appreciated. A massive thank you especially to the crew members on the ship who always make an effort to get to know your name, check in and give you a smile or laugh whenever you're stressed by travel planning, relationships and/or academics. The food does get quite repetitive if I'm being honest but it's truly a blessing to have such skilled crew members who can create delicious and nutritious meals in the middle of nowhere on the ocean. Pro tip: always get your cake first cause everyone loves the cake and it's always the first to go. In terms of academics. there are a variety of courses and I loved how everything always tied back to our in-port experiences, which allowed us to reflect on our SAS journey deeply, which I think was a crucial aid in how I developed and matured as a person. This was a great bridge between high school and university because I feel that I came out more mature, socially aware and ready for adult life. I also never felt that I couldn't make new friends because everyone is so open and you get to interact with a lot of diversity due to the various represented cultures, backgrounds, religions, nationalities etc. Til now, I am so grateful for the friends I made on SAS and we keep in touch almost daily as we plan our reunion trips. If I had one piece of advice for whoever's reading this, is that you will never truly see and understand the world around you until you're interacting with various people on the ship and in port. So do it!!! You will never regret SAS, I can promise you that :p

Argo changed my life
December 26, 2025by: Amelia Jackson - United StatesMy Seamester trip changed my life. I was shocked to discover how much I love to sail, explore new places, and live on the ocean! I was really struggling to find something I’m passionate about, but since leaving Argo, I am actively chasing opportunities to work on a boat and continue living on the ocean. I met some of the best friends I’ll ever have, and I cannot imagine a world in which I never met them. The staff were so helpful, supportive, and incredibly caring. I immediately felt like we were all one large family. I cannot recommend this enough. There are hard parts, that’s for sure. I definitely had moments where I was just so exhausted, homesick, nervous, and stressed out. But the lessons I learned in those situations shaped me into a more confident and adventurous person, and I am so grateful for that. If you’re considering going on a Seamester trip, GO!! I highly recommend the Mediterranean to Caribbean trip, the places we went were remarkable and I wish I could go back in time and do it all over again. Seriously, it is worth every penny. I will always remember my trip and if someone else has even half the experience I had, I know they will absolutely love it.

Incredible experience
June 18, 2025by: EmilyOur son found the Future Leaders Program when he decided to take a gap semester after his first semester of college. Spanish Gap Year checked all the boxes we were looking for, offering an experience that had both the cultural component and the structure from which to keep building on the skills he was learning in college. Future Leaders offered the chance to continue learning challenging subjects (Spanish and business concepts), exposed him to two different cities, and also had independent dorm living in the second half so he could continue the independence he started in college. The program staff were incredible. Overall, the program exceeded our expectations and we would recommend it to anyone!
Delivered Well beyond Our Expectations
December 04, 2024by: Ken Silliman - United StatesSpanish Gap Year: Our son, who is a junior at a large east coast US university, decided to take a GAP semester to gain life and real-world work experience. After meeting with a consultant at Gap Year Solutions, he was able to learn about a number of different GAP options in different countries. After careful deliberation, he chose The Spanish Gap Year Future Leaders Entrepreneurship program. He had an amazing experience with this program and gained more self-confidence, especially by navigating through a foreign country. He really loved the Spanish culture, and totally benefited from the entrepreneurial activities/projects and mentoring offered by the Program. I visited him in Barcelona, and I was really impressed with the housing (clean, safe, and excellent amenities). He spoke very highly he quality of work given to him at his internship (Lean Mail) and really liked his boss. The Program's mentors and group activities were also top-notch (fun and enriching). He now feels inspired to return to school with renewed enthusiasm and has very valuable experience to put on his resume, not to mention wonderful memories! https://spanishgapyear.com/future-leaders/

My experience
November 28, 2024by: Theo Robinson - United StatesMy main goal going into this program was to improve my Spanish, and I was definitely successful with that, however you have to be intentional in ensuring that you are placed in a Spanish speaking internship, take advantage of extra Spanish classes, etc. Sagri and Maryam were very helpful, kind, and proactive, however the program’s instructions could be unclear at times. I personally had a fantastic time, but I think that you have to be self-driven to get the most out of it. Spain is a beautiful country, and it was a pleasure to spend 3 months here. The program has definitely opened my eyes to a new culture, and provided a good environment to grow as a person.
Abes’ Review
November 28, 2024by: Abe Spector - United StatesI had an awesome experience with this program. The month in Madrid was amazing and it was neat to go live in Barcelona. The only issue is that there are not nearly as many program activities in Barcelona as there are in Madrid. The fullest enjoyment of this program requires someone very self motivated.
Amazing experience:)
August 03, 2024by: Clara Meekins - United StatesFrom attending Spanish class in a beautiful old building with stained glass to pitching to a panel of investors on the 25th floor of amazing building in Barcelona, this program covered all the bases. We had the freedom to explore Madrid and Barcelona and find our favorite cafes and corner restaurants but were still kept busy with morning internships and afternoon entrepreneurship classes. I felt really supported by our mentors who are all extremely knowledgeable and always ready to lend a hand. Arantxa, the program manager, personally checked in on all of us constantly and made sure everything was going well. It was comforting to have such support while being in such a flexible program with time for whatever adventures we came up with. I loved this program and am sad to leave my new friends and Barcelona.
Fabulous program!
June 29, 2024by: Lene Otzen - BrazilMy son participated in the Future Leaders’ program and it was a great experience. I loved how the program started out in Madrid with a host family followed by two months in Barcelona where he lived in his own room, a great transition towards independence. The program is very well structured and run super professionally - as the program is new we didn’t really know what to expect but we were impressed by the dedication and organization of both teachers, classes, internships & mentors.

Amazing trip
July 14, 2023by: Scott Winchester - United StatesProgram: Europe Tour with Gapforce
I’ve seen everything I need to see in Europe. The trip was long enough for me to meet my new best friends, and Mike was a very good group leader. When I got my phone stolen in Rome Mike helped me file the police report and get all of that sorted out. All of the accommodations were very nice and the travel was easy thanks to Mike. Overall this was a great experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

More affordable than other programs
July 15, 2022by: Elizabeth B. - United StatesProgram: CIEE Gap Year in Paris, France: French Language & Culture
I would recommend it because it was more affordable than other programs I saw, and my French level improved drastically within the seven week stay. My host family was awesome and Rennes was an amazing city. The instructors and the directors of the program were great people and easy to communicate with.
It's really awesome
June 30, 2022by: Michelle C. - United StatesProgram: CIEE Gap Year in Paris, France: French Language & Culture
I'd be likely to recommend CIEE study abroad to a friend because I think it's about as good of an experience as one might be able to get in terms of study abroad. It's really awesome how we have both excursions and intensive classes. I don't think the program is necessarily perfect but then again I don't think any program is - especially with something as daunting as studying in another country. I think CIEE gets about as close as one can :D
An unforgettable experience
August 15, 2019by: John Belay - CanadaProgram: Europe Tour with Gapforce
I participated I The Europe Tour put on by Gapforce in July 2019 and I have to say I’m glad I took the chance to participate in the tour! From London all the way to Amsterdam I made many friends and memories I’ll never forget! This was my first time travelling abroad and Gapforce took all worries that I had about traveling away! Hostels: The living conditions Gapforce provided were better than I expected! They found safe/clean hostels for us to stay where we’d bunk in rooms together and with other travellers. I met so many interesting people and made some friends at the hostels we stayed at! Tour Guides: Will and Andy our tour guides provided by Gapforce did a FANTASTIC job on this tour! We were very lucky to have such ambitious, patient and charismatic leaders! Whether it was assisting us after our nightly adventures or making sure everyone was being included in group activities both Will and Andy went ABOVE their job description to make sure everyone enjoyed their trip! Cheers boys!! Travelling: We always travelled by train in between countries! The trains are very spacious and I had no bad experiences on any of them! Make sure to use the metro in the cities, they’re your best friend and will save you a ton of walking! If you do partake in this trip be prepared to do a lot of walking during the day while your out and while you’re going to the next destination so be prepared to be moving around a lot! The tour: Everyday we’d usually start out in the morning with a tour by either Will or Andy in which we’d go see different tourist attractions and sights around the city. After that we’d take a break for lunch and have a choice after to continue on a guided tour by them or to be able to take the afternoon to ourselves. I found taking the afternoon to walk around and explore was a good way to take in the culture and meet some locals! Escape days and the nightlife: We got two escape in our four week period in Europe in which we were able to do whatever we wanted! My best advice would be to plan your day out in advance the day before so you can get tickets to any tours or sights you’d like to see! The nightlife in most of the places was interesting! It’s a very fun way to take in the culture and meet people! My only advice would be to always travel in groups( especially when out at night) and make sure to look after yourself if you are partaking in any of the nighttime adventures. Safety: Our tour guides did a great job of making sure everyone stayed safe on our trip! They always would check in on us if we were on our own adventures and always made sure we were staying hydrated if we were with them! Overall the trip was life changing and I met so many great people that came along on the tour and on our travels! A truly unforgettable experience!!

An unforgettable trip
August 02, 2019by: Heaven Miller - United StatesProgram: Europe Tour with Gapforce
I have never done something like this before. I’ve never been away from family for more than a week so this was a huge step. The leaders were there for me to lean on when i needed comfort from my homesickness and they talked me through different ways to help cope. They genuinely cared about my well being as well as my mental health which helped me tremendously throughout the duration of this trip. I learned a lot from my leaders and matured from this experience and saw many, MANY beautiful places unlike any other. Each place holds a unique memory for me and i would recommend this to anyone/everyone looking to gain some independence, friends, as well as the experience of a lifetime.
Would definitely recommend!!
July 28, 2019by: Emma Mcfeely - United StatesProgram: Europe Tour with Gapforce
This trip was so fun! It was perfect for someone like me who really wanted to travel to Europe but wasn’t comfortable traveling by myself. I got to experience so many different cultures, beautiful places amazing history and meet so many amazing people that I will continue to keep In touch with. Our leaders Andy and Will were amazing and did a great job keeping everything running smoothly and making sure that everyone was always having a good time. They knew so much about each place we went to and made sure we got to do anything we wanted to do. I would 100% recommend this trip to anyone looking to travel around Europe!
Highlight of my summer!!!
July 28, 2019by: Sophia Rippner - United StatesProgram: Europe Tour with Gapforce
I had such an amazing time on the Europe tour with Gapforce. I was looking forward to the trip for ages, and once it started it didn’t disappoint. I met such great people on the trip. Our group leaders were awesome. Will and Andy couldn’t have done a better job. They knew a lot about each city we traveled to, and lead great tours throughout the trip. I really enjoyed the itinerary- the leaders did a really nice job of letting us explore each city in small groups after a big group tour. Escape days throughout the trip were so fun, and it was nice to be able to make your own itinerary for the day! If you’re looking into a travel agency, I would 100% recommend Gapforce. The Gapforce team was so helpful when questions needed answers. The Europe tour with Will and Andy was by far the highlight of my summer!!
Best gap year program!
July 28, 2019by: Chizelle Spies - South AfricaProgram: Europe Tour with Gapforce
Thinking about traveling through Europe? Gapforce is the perfect company to approach. I chose Gapforce because they had a well structured itinerary. Our leaders Andy and Will were both excellent in managing the logistics of our tour. They always made sure that we were on time for our trains and that we were safe and comfortable. Everyday was filled with sightseeing, fun and laughter, our leaders even arranged a boat cruise for us in Barcelona. There was never a dull moment ! I also made so many incredible new friends on this trip. I would recommend booking your Europe tour with Gapforce. You won’t regret it !

Europe tour 2019: an incredible experience!
July 28, 2019by: Kateryna Laing - CanadaProgram: Europe Tour with Gapforce
The Gapforce Europe Tour was a greatly enjoyable experience and a true highlight of my gap year. Through this trip you can see so many cities with a variety of cultures and attractions. I got to see Buckingham Palace, the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, the Berlin Wall and so so much more, all in a single month! All the planning was handled by our incredible tour guides Will and Andy, so it was all the fun with none of the logistics! The food was great, the people friendly, and the sights spectacular. You’re given a good tour of all the sights, and then the freedom to explore where you want to go. I highly highly recommend it to anyone on a gap year who wants to travel, and I myself and so glad I went!

I started off doing the 2 weeks and then decided too do the 4 weeks and It was the most amazing 4 weeks ever! Visited some amazing places and made some amazing friends! The leaders were great, approachable and professional and both leaders (Will and Andy) are very informative! I would love to do it all over again. It was hard work carrying luggage around (I used a large backpack) but would definitely recommend taking a backpack! Overall, it was a great experience and would definitely recommend for anyone looking to travel Europe and have a little adventure. Alicia :)
