Its grand historical architecture is suggestive of the European capitals, but the vibe here definitely has the hustle and bustle of a Latin American city, too. API: Experience Buenos Aires, Argentina (with Scholarships)

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and is located on the shore of the Río de la Plata. It is one of Latin America's most important ports and populous cities. This grand city with wide avenues and a vibrant cosmopolitan flair is seen as more European than Latin American. Its energy and bustle are most evident in the city's center, an epicenter of entertainment, shopping, and café culture. It is built on the original colonial foundations of the Spanish people. This center serves as the location for many and most financial institutions and corporate headquarters. New for Spring 2024: Come study in Argentina's vibrant and exciting capital city, Buenos Aires! Students will enroll in coursework at Universidad de Belgrano, with a concentration on Spanish language and Latin American studies. This program is especially good for Spanish minors and majors, as most courses offered are the building blocks of those degrees. Enjoy excursions to Tigre, La Plata, and Estancia!

A Guide to Gap Year Programs in Buenos Aires

Why Take a Gap Year in Buenos Aires?

Along with opportunities to volunteer, which is common in many Latin American capitals, Buenos Aires is a popular destination for temporary “work holiday” positions in hostels and hotels where your work is often compensated in part by the provision of a free place to stay. Gap year programs in Buenos Aires can also be spent learning Spanish, but be prepared! Porteño probably doesn’t sound like the Spanish you heard in high school. The unique Argentine spin will make a fun challenge for the linguistically adventurous.

Feel at home in the Paris of Latin America. For those who love the nightlife, safely-navigated Buenos Aires gap years will be an absolute, if but tiring, blast—the club scene here doesn’t even get started until around 2 a.m. The more scholarly will love to spend their afternoons strolling through the city searching for their next good read at one Buenos Aires’s many bookstores.

Amazing Experience

This was my first time volunteering abroad and it was truly amazing! If you are looking for a hands-on volunteer with a local organization this is it. I did a two-week volunteer but I wish it was longer. UCESCO is a local organization and therefore you will get to interact with the community on a daily basis and help directly with their needs. Everything is very transparent and everyone from the organization is always there to support you whenever you need it. They will make sure you feel safe and at home at all times. At the accommodation, you will be given a spacious apartment, and have the opportunity to hang out with all of the other volunteers. You will also get to meet wonderful people such as Mercy who takes care of all the volunteers at the accommodation. My only recommendation if you want to do this volunteer is to be open to work on whatever is needed. Sometimes you might sign up for a program but when you get to Nairobi the organization has some more urgent needs. Hence, if you want to contribute to the best of your abilities I would recommend being open to work on whatever project is ongoing. I would also recommend taking donations from back home (clothes you don't use, toys, books, notebooks, sports equipment, electronics, etc) because anything you can give them helps.
