Come and take part in this tropical island adventure in and around the white sand beaches of the matchless archipelago of Zanzibar, just off the Tanzanian coast in East Africa. Participants live in Jambiani and work primarily in Kizimkazi. With up to fourteen other volunteers, you will research and protect bottle-nose and humpback dolphins as well as fish, birds, whales (seasonal), and other marine life that live on and around the scattered islands. The focal effort of the conservation project is to monitor the human-dolphin interactions which play a large role in the amount of stress put on the dolphins and could potentially lead to a smaller dolphin population. The studies that volunteers carry out can advise the government to create the most ideal policies on how to regulate such tourist activities. The data collected by participants is fed into various studies and surveys conducted by the research and academic institutions of Zanzibar. The work and contributions that you will make as a volunteer are extremely crucial and much needed by the marine conservation efforts of Zanzibar.

Come to Zanzibar and volunteer on this teaching and community development project located on the island. The project works with a number of different schools and community institutions where you will be volunteering and doing a variety of different task. Volunteers will work in a range of different schools including preschools, primary and secondary schools where you will support local teachers in educating and playing with children. You will also have the opportunity to work with adults by teaching life skills at the local tourism institute. Volunteers may also have the chance to get involved with the local beach and marine conservation programme. The activities you undertake will depend on the time of year of your visit, school holidays and the needs of the project, but there is always plenty to do. This project is ideal for volunteers with a keen interest in education and who work well with children. For volunteers who wish to lead lessons, a teaching qualification will be needed, such as a TEFL or TESOL certificate.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop extensive experience in marine conservation and a bank of practical skills in marine conservation. What’s more, you’ll get to live and work in a tropical paradise as you do. With this internship, you’ll work with a nonprofit based in the Netherlands committed to developing marine conservation in Zanzibar. They operate by partnering with and supporting local marine conservation initiatives and projects. They are engaged in numerous activities, including coral reef restorations, monitoring marine reef ecosystems, turtle hatcheries, coastal pollution surveys, and conservation education programs. Your role as an intern will vary greatly depending on your skills and interests. You’ll get the chance to engage with practical conservation work, gain insight into the day-to-day running of a conservation nonprofit, and develop skills in community engagement. On top of this, you’ll also get the chance to combine this program with training for a SCUBA Divemaster program.

We arrange volunteering and internship placements in teaching and childcare at various schools and kindergartens in Zanzibar. The Heroes Community Academy, a private school by an NGO, offers higher education standards than government schools. The school serves 180 students aged 2-15. There are also 12 children with intellectual disabilities who can be engaged in informal learning. Volunteers assist with teaching, activities, and NGO initiatives like farming, workshops, and job placement. Run by the Anglican Church in Zanzibar’s historic district, the St. Monica Kindergarten & Primary School includes a kindergarten and primary/secondary levels. School hours vary, and volunteers can help with both classroom and administrative tasks. Classes are mainly in English, making it easy for volunteers to assist. Located in Mangapwani, Montessori Kindergarten & Primary School accommodates 50 kindergarteners, 60 primary students, and 20 boarding children. Teaching is in English, with a focus on playful learning. Volunteers engage in classroom activities and organize recreational and educational programs. Boarding students, housed for social reasons, are supported by school fees.

By participating in this social project, you can contribute to the local community by improving the learning conditions for students in nearby schools. You can create a positive learning environment by laying bricks, carpentry work, painting, tiling, landscaping, and gardening. Additionally, you may be involved in renovating buildings, repairing furniture, and fixing equipment to support the school infrastructure. This project also allows for artistic and creative expression, as you can help beautify the school surroundings with your ideas. You will work under the guidance of a local coordinator and a foreman who will assist you during the process. This is a fun activity that supports initiative and creativity. This volunteer program by KVT places you in Tanzania, where you will work in an orphanage and assist in the care of kids and teens. They have lost their parents due to various reasons, including accidents and deadly diseases (i.e., HIV/AIDS). The orphanage is located within a local community, and you will help with daily activities as well as educate widows, youth, and people living with HIV/AIDS. You will contribute to our efforts in educating locals on how to take care of themselves. Together with other volunteers, you will also visit homes and teach households – especially those dealing with HIV/AIDS – about health issues. If you are caring, motivated, and open-minded, you will fit into our team perfectly.
