Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicine on the Spice Island
Program Overview
More than ten years ago, Anna, a devoted animal lover, started this project after witnessing the mistreatment of working donkeys. Initially, the project focused on providing a sanctuary for donkeys and other animals. However, it has since evolved to include animal rescue and veterinary treatment. This project is one of the few facilities in Zanzibar that offers medical treatment to animals.
Over the years, the project has helped all animals in need, including Zanzibari livestock, cows, donkeys, goats, and even an occasional monkey or bird, despite limited resources.
The project is located in the countryside, just a half-hour’s drive from the beautiful Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the tropical East African island of Zanzibar. The clinic is a bustling hub of activity, providing treatment, surgery, vaccination, and medical care to local animals.
Open to both volunteers and interns, this project is best for animal lovers of veterinary medicine, tech, and nursing students, and qualified veterinary professionals looking to experience the challenges of animal rescue and treatment in Africa.
