In this program, you will be given the opportunity to change the lives of women in Kathmandu, where sexism and equality are big issues. Women are less likely to be employed and/or receive an adequate pay. This program aims to mitigate the effects of this discrimination by allowing you to empower these women and show them that they matter. You will teach English (and a few other subjects – see below for more details) and help these women thrive through enhancing their confidence. Volunteers’ responsibilities may include teaching the women how to use a computer (basic skills), teaching them about various health topics, talking to them about the rights that they have and/or conducting activities and workshops.

In Nepal, women are born into a society where their rights are subordinate to those of men. Girls are often married off at an early age with little or no education, land rights or independent income options available to them. Our initiatives in Nepal, hope to turn the tide against gender discrimination by empowering local girls and women through gender equality and alternative income workshops, educating them on a variety of health topics and providing educational centers. By volunteering on this program with GVI, you will join a dedicated team of international volunteers assisting on sustainable and invaluable women’s empowerment initiatives.

Volunteers can choose from a variety of immersive, unique, and rewarding community engagement projects across numerous fields like Healthcare - related to Dental, Medical and Physical Therapy, Monastery Teaching, and Women Empowerment. Namaste and welcome to Nepal, a country of high Himalayan Mountains, artistic monuments, exotic wildlife, and diverse cultures. While small, it has the greatest latitudinal variation of any country. The land rises from the southern plains of the Terai, barely above sea level, to the top of Mt. Everest - the highest peak on Earth, in a distance of less than 130 miles. Most volunteer projects are available in Kathmandu, the capital and largest city in Nepal. Even from the bustling city center - filled with historic temples and carved statues - views of the snow-capped peaks of the majestic Himalayas emerge against the intense blue skies.

During the first week of this program, you will take part in a mandatory culture week designed to help you understand local customs—an essential foundation when working with vulnerable communities. Many women in Nepal leave rural areas to seek employment in cities, hoping to improve life for their families. Often, they have little or no formal education and work as housemaids, making it difficult to access better job opportunities in a society where education—especially in English—is crucial for advancement. You will play a key role in expanding their opportunities through structured English lessons and everyday conversation. All higher education in Nepal is conducted in English, making your teaching especially valuable. A trained teacher will support you in planning your lessons, with a focus on inspiring women of all ages and helping them rediscover their strengths. You will teach groups with varying educational backgrounds, using a provided course book as a guide, particularly helpful for first-time educators. Creative methods are encouraged to make learning engaging and meaningful.

This volunteering experience includes English teaching and community development and will involve you working closely with young children of all ages in poor, disadvantaged communities. We also promote community living so you will be housed with compassionate and curious travellers just like yourself, so you will always have someone to share your amazing experiences with at the end of a long day. Not only will our program take you to the most incredible destinations and allow you the chance to give back as you travel, but you’ll meet some awesome people too and maybe even make some friends for life.

The basic need for a children's development program stems from the following facts about Nepal. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, with approximately 25% of its population living below the poverty line. Therefore, the fundamental rights of many community children are often not met. Most children in rural communities aged 3 to 5 lack access to quality education. Approximately 5% of children never attend school. The children who attend school often drop out before completing high school. Only 46.2% of children complete their high school education. They instead help at home, support household chores, and babysit while their parents work on the farm. 37.4% of children aged 5 to 17 are involved in agricultural labor, with a significant proportion working on their family farms. 26.3% of children aged 10 to 18 are married or in a union with their partner. So, the children’s development is not well in place.

Get involved in the Woman Empowerment Project offered by Friends for Asia, and get the chance to make a real difference in the lives of women Nepal, a beautiful but impoverished country. Years of insurgency and political uncertainty have caused the country to fall behind many of its neighbors when it comes to human rights. An uneasy peace now exists, but little has been done at government level to help the women of Nepal. This is where Friends for Asia comes in. Our volunteers work with disadvantaged women in a number of centers to educate, assist and help them lead their lives with dignity in a male-dominated society. Volunteering in Nepal - A Day in the Life Our Woman Empowerment Project allows our Nepal volunteers to really get to the heart of Nepal life. Volunteers will work closely with disadvantaged women to educate them and give them a new perspective on life. This can be done throughout the day through basic interaction and activities. Volunteers will also schedule classes in subjects that help the women help themselves, such as English, computer skills, office skills and other skills that will aid them in the path to employment or further education.

Volunteers in Nepal immerse themselves in a vibrant culture. Most famous for Mt. Everest, the country captures hearts because of its people and customs. The Nepalese are known for cooking hearty, flavorful meals and greeting others with "Namaste." While tourism is booming, Nepal still remains one of the poorest countries. Volunteers mostly work in rural communities. Volunteers in Nepal can be caregivers at child care centers, teaching assistants at schools, and counselors for women and girls victimized by human trafficking.
