Volunteer at a School for Deaf and Blind Children in Ghana

Make a difference in the lives of differently-abled children in Ghana! Apply to this volunteering project for deaf and blind children at a school in Cape Coast, Ghana. The project aims at providing a positive and safe learning environment for these children. The school is government-funded and serves as a sanctuary for those who would otherwise be deprived of the support and quality education they deserve. It fosters an inclusive environment where all students can develop and harness their abilities and talents and prepare them for future success. As a volunteer, you will support teachers in designing, adapting, and delivering high-quality lessons. You will help in developing individualized education programs (IEPs). You will also teach the students about human rights, importance of active citizenship, and empower them to have academic and career goals. No specific skills are required for this project but this suits those who are pursuing a career or with experience working in SEN education or childhood development. Participants must have a positive and dynamic attitude. Also, patience, flexibility, and empathy are essential when working with children with disabilities.

School Teaching Assistant

As a volunteer in our school project, you will teach children aged 3–15 at Yikene Primary School in Bolga. Volunteers may choose from English Language, Arithmetic, or ICT—our most popular subjects. You will work under the supervision of a trained teacher, with class sizes ranging from 20 to 35 students. We encourage volunteers to bring creativity to make lessons lively and engaging. Through this project, you will learn how to relate with school children, manage a class, understand how lessons are conducted in Ghana, and carry out class assessments. Volunteers who arrive during the school term will experience regular class sessions, while those who join during vacation will support our extra classes held during the summer programme. We provide guidance to help volunteers adapt, especially those facing language barriers or challenges in class control. By the end of your placement, you will have imparted valuable knowledge and built meaningful one-on-one connections with the children. Roles: Prepare lesson notes, conduct exercises and assignments, set class rules, ensure discipline, and manage classroom challenges.

Support for Children with Special Needs & Disability

Join a volunteer program abroad that aims to equip individuals with intellectual disabilities with the attitudes and vocational skills to make them functional and employable. The placement is at a life community school, a boarding facility in Ghana for the intellectually challenged. Most of the children here have families who neglected them because of their disabilities. The government runs the center, while the day-to-day activities are left to kind-hearted individuals and groups. With just five teachers and two House Mothers who manage 74 kids, they find it hard to monitor and give each child attention as well as quality, three square meals every day. Therefore, volunteers are urgently needed to help with all activities at the community school. Duties include: - Providing life skills - Teaching basic everyday activities like dressing up, wearing shoes, combing the hair, and brushing the teeth - Helping to develop their intelligence quotient (IQ) - Organizing fun games and activities, enabling the kids to play and interact with one another

Excellent Time!

March 02, 2026by: Joshua TINDOOG - Ghana

Program: School Teaching Assistant

10

My time here was a rewarding experience that allowed me to support both teachers and students in a practical way. I assisted in classroom activities, helped students understand lessons, and provided one-on-one support to those who needed extra attention. This role strengthened my patience, communication skills, and ability to work with children from different learning backgrounds. I also helped prepare learning materials and supported classroom management, which made lessons run more smoothly. Seeing students improve in confidence and participation was the most fulfilling part of the experience. Overall, the role helped me grow personally and professionally, while contributing positively to the learning environment and student progress.
