Africa’s Gold Coast is the perfect destination to volunteer for teaching programs. You will assist in helping young students increase their confidence in working with numbers, words and computers. GVI volunteers will be providing schools in and around Accra with the manpower they need to allow each child access to more personalised instruction in subjects like English, Mathematics and Computer Literacy. The cosmopolitan city of Accra is yours to explore in your free time, make use of this unique opportunity to shop for local handicrafts at one of the many markets and experience the uniquely Ghanaian flavours of fufu and peanut soup.

As a volunteer in our school project, you will teach children aged 3–15 at Yikene Primary School in Bolga. Volunteers may choose from English Language, Arithmetic, or ICT—our most popular subjects. You will work under the supervision of a trained teacher, with class sizes ranging from 20 to 35 students. We encourage volunteers to bring creativity to make lessons lively and engaging. Through this project, you will learn how to relate with school children, manage a class, understand how lessons are conducted in Ghana, and carry out class assessments. Volunteers who arrive during the school term will experience regular class sessions, while those who join during vacation will support our extra classes held during the summer programme. We provide guidance to help volunteers adapt, especially those facing language barriers or challenges in class control. By the end of your placement, you will have imparted valuable knowledge and built meaningful one-on-one connections with the children. Roles: Prepare lesson notes, conduct exercises and assignments, set class rules, ensure discipline, and manage classroom challenges.

As a volunteer in this program, you'll have the opportunity to teach in private, government, or mission schools at the primary, junior high, or senior high level, based on their preference. Subjects may include English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Business Management. While school staff provide guidance on lesson planning and curriculum, volunteers are encouraged to bring teaching materials, such as picture books, flashcards, art supplies, or musical instruments, to enrich the classroom experience. The Lady Volta Green Tech Academy (LVGTA), launched in 2015 by Village Exchange Ghana and Social Venture Africa, is a rural training centre in Ghana’s Volta Region. It empowers underprivileged youth—especially young women—with practical skills in electricity and renewable energy. Volunteers play a key role in advancing the academy’s mission to expand access to clean, affordable energy and promote gender equality through green technology. Volunteering roles include: • Technical Mentors: Deliver hands-on training in solar and electrical systems, assist with lab sessions, and contribute to curriculum design. • Women in Tech Advocates: Support female students through mentoring, empowerment workshops, and peer engagement. • Community Outreach Volunteers: Lead awareness efforts and help facilitate student-led energy projects in nearby communities. • Capacity Builders: Conduct training for instructors and assist with teaching strategies and evaluation methods. • Program Support: Manage reporting, impact tracking, grant writing, and building external partnerships.
