A Guide to Studying Abroad in Vietnam
Best Places to Study Abroad in Vietnam
Bordered by China, Laos, and Cambodia, and a short journey from the rest of Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a great base for anyone wanting to do some traveling before, during, or after their study abroad in Vietnam. Within the country, both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are popular city destinations, whereas Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Hue have scenic and cultural attractions.
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon, is big, loud, bustling, and international. Downtown is full of sprawling boulevards and gorgeous historic French colonial buildings. Visit the Museum of Vietnamese History, the War Remnants Museum, or the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens. No matter where the hustle and bustle might take you, Ho Chi Minh City will give you a real taste of ultra-modern Vietnam.
Da Nang offers a quieter escape. While it is still a larger coastal city, it is home to a major port, beautiful beaches, and is within 100 kilometers of several UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the Imperial City of Hue, the Old Town of Hoi An, and the My Son ruins. Many of Da Nang’s residents work in agriculture, which provides for a diverse setting of city, mountains, farms, and — of course — magnificent marketplaces.
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam that is situated on the delta of the Red River in the northern region. The city has been ranked as one of the world’s top ten destinations by TripAdvisor in the last couple of years. Here you can sing your heart out at karaoke bars, watch a water puppet show at Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre, and explore the Old Quarter with its temples and pagodas. You’ll find the majority of study abroad programs in this captivating city.
Popular Subjects to Study in Vietnam
With several acclaimed universities, Vietnam offers a variety of educational opportunities. Many of the country’s larger universities are based in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; however, the number of colleges and universities has dramatically increased in recent years, and enrollment is among the highest in the world. Programs of study in Vietnam vary by program and university.
Business. For those looking to gain international business perspectives, Vietnam offers you the chance to visit companies and learn more about working with other cultures. You could even be attending classes on the roofs of Buddhist temples, and you’ll learn about working in a global environment and learn management skills along the way.
Vietnamese. Looking to learn a new language? Vietnam is your chance to take intensive language classes, meet tutors, and practice in a service learning environment. You could even look into student exchange programs. Being able to speak Vietnamese while exploring this mesmerizing country will provide you with the ability to get even more out of your time there.
Asian Studies. Learn about how rapid urbanization, increasing tourism, and economic development affects sustainability in Southeast Asia. You’ll learn more about the traditional culture and values from thought-provoking guest speakers, volunteer projects, independent study programs, or outdoor excursions.
Costs of Studying in Vietnam
While the cost of living in Vietnam is relatively expensive, such as affordable transportation and meals, the program fees will carry a large price tag. Thankfully, most study abroad Vietnam program fees cover the cost of accommodation, a couple meals a day, tuition, health insurance, support, and orientation.
The study abroad program cost depends heavily on the placement and duration. If you’re staying only for a couple of weeks, you can expect it to be around $1000, but if you’re staying for a full semester to earn 15-18 credits, it’s comparable to the cost of tuition with room and board in the United States. Many scholarships are available, such as the David L. Boren scholarships and the Freeman Awards for Study in Asia scholarships, which can cover thousands of dollars. You can view more available scholarships via GoAbroad’s Scholarship Directory, and you can reach out to families and friends for support to fundraise through FundMyTravel.
Student Housing in Vietnam
The type of study abroad Vietnam experience you’re looking to have involves your housing options. Depending on your placement and program, you could be staying in an apartment/flat, a student dormitory, a hotel, or a homestay placement.
With a homestay placement, you’ll be living with a Vietnamese host family. You’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture while you learn more about the traditions and customs on a one-on-one level. You’ll also be able to learn Vietnamese more quickly and fluently and learn how to cook authentic Vietnamese cuisines with the family. A homestay is your best bet for getting the most out of your study abroad experience here.
Student Visas for Vietnam
Before arriving in Vietnam, you’ll need to obtain a student visa. The visa requirements can change often, and the process may take longer than you expect, and you could be charged fees upon arriving. You will also need a passport that is valid up to six months beyond your departure date. The study abroad Vietnam program coordinator usually assist with visa matters, and you can also start with GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory to get a head start as well.
Benefits & Challenges
You’re in for a treat when it comes to food here! Known for fresh and flavorful ingredients, Vietnamese cuisine is among the healthiest and tastiest in the world. Fruits, vegetables, herbs, fish, and rice dominate many traditional dishes. Pho (pronounced fuh) is the most famous dish. A unique and interesting characteristic of Vietnamese food is that it traditionally incorporates five taste elements within each meal: spicy (metal), sour (wood), bitter (fire), salty (water) and sweet (Earth).
Vietnamese may prove to be difficult to learn, and like any language, it takes a great deal of practice to become more comfortable with it. While English is one of the most popular languages in Vietnam, you’ll come to find that not everyone speaks it or speaks it fluently. You should consider taking foreign language classes while you’re in Vietnam, which will help you navigate the country more easily (expect congested cities and plentiful traffic holdups) and have more enriching conversations with the locals.
Choose to study abroad in Vietnam, as it’s a prominent and historical piece of the Southeast Asian pie. Delve into Asian history, diverse culture, and steaming noodle bowls topped with basil all at once, all while gaining a unique and prestigious international education.

Heritage Speaker - Vietnamese Learning Experience
August 28, 2026by: Andrew Phan - United StatesBefore coming to study at LTL, as a heritage speaker I could have simple conversations, but could hardly read/write. I chose LTL because of the opportunities for intensive classes and activities to interact with other students and natives. I only studied here for 3 weeks, but I think my Vietnamese has improved immensely, giving me the foundation to continue my studies back home. I am deeply appreciative of my teacher, John, who challenged and pushed me. My class was exclusively in Vietnamese and that helped greatly with immersion. I recommend LTL to anyone coming to Saigon to study Vietnamese!

I had so much fun !
August 06, 2026by: Lea Vu - United StatesI honestly thought that taking extra language classes after my regular school day was going to be the most boring thing in the entire world, but studying Vietnamese at LTL Language School in Saigon turned out to be the absolute highlight of my week. When my parents first signed me up, I was picturing a super strict classroom where I would have to stare at a giant textbook and repeat grammar rules until my brain turned to mush. But it was nothing like that at all! My teacher was this really cool, energetic girl who instantly made the classroom feel like a fun hangout spot instead of a boring school. I was super nervous on the first day because Vietnamese sounds really hard with all the different tones, and I was terrified of sounding silly when I tried speaking. But the second she walked in, she just had this super bubbly and hilarious personality that made me actually want to pay attention. She realized right away that sitting still and just reading pages wasn't going to work for me, so she completely changed the way I learned. The whole process was so interactive and packed with so many activities that I usually forgot I was even studying. Instead of giving me long, boring lists of words to memorize, she used the most amazing flashcards to make everything stick in my head. She would bring in these huge stacks of colorful flashcards and we would all make our own flashcards as well. Every time we had to learn a new word, there was a cute or funny drawing to go with it. Because I am a very visual person, seeing the pictures right next to the words helped me memorize them so much faster. I never had to go home and stare at a boring vocabulary list because I could just close my eyes and remember the funny cartoon on the flashcard. She even let me make my own flashcards sometimes, and I would doodle my own little pictures on blank cards with colorful markers. She totally encouraged it and would help me come up with silly ways to draw the new vocabulary words. It made learning the words feel way more like working on a fun art project than actually doing homework. She was always coming up with creative mini-games to make the learning process feel super exciting. We played so many different mini-games that the time always just flew by. One of my favorites was saying a word at the same time as the other, if got different answers we have to make sentence with it. I had to shout the word out loud with the perfect tone to keep the points and to make sure the other said the same thing. Sometimes we played memory games where she would say a word and the rest has to repeat and add more words after, we eventually forget most of them at the end because there were too many , but it was good for the brain to memorize them this way.something using only the Vietnamese words I had already learned. We even played mini-games to help me get the hang of the crazy tones. She made learning fun ! We were constantly laughing, and she never made me feel bad if I forgot a word or messed up a sentence during a game. If I got something wrong, we would just giggle about it, and she would shuffle the flashcards and let me try again. Because of all these fun methods and mini-games, my brain just absorbed the vocabulary so naturally. I actually know how to speak quite a bit of Vietnamese now, and I can confidently order my own drinks or buy my own snacks at the convenience store near my apartment. The whole learning process at LTL was just incredible because my teacher put so much effort into making sure I was always engaged, smiling, and actually enjoying myself. If you are my age and your parents want you to learn the language without feeling like you are trapped in summer school, I really recommend this place because you will end up having the best time while learning so much. Cảm ơn cô rất nhiều ! Cảm ơn LTL

We know Vietnamese is a challenge, Lea. So we're delighted to hear we've made things that little bit easier for you! You've made super progress and we're so proud to see it :) Keep it up, and just little steps every day will make a big difference long term!! LTL Team

LTL Language School in Ho Chi Minh City
LTL Team
Life Changing Experience
July 27, 2026by: Rylee Soifer - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
I graduated from high school a semester early, and the only way I wanted to spend my semester was by being abroad. I've known about Semester at Sea for around 6 years and I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. I searched up the requirements to be accepted and luckily fit all the requirements most importantly being 18, so immediately I applied. I then got an email back the next morning saying I got accepted into the program and that email brought me to tears in the middle of one of my classes. I couldn't wait to board the MV World Odyssey and embark on this journey of a lifetime. On the ship, I gained so much knowledge about different cultures and I was able to be fully immersed in them, not just sticking to the touristy things offered. Semester at Sea does an amazing job keeping the students' safety in country as a priority with having mandatory “Pre-Port meetings” the night before arriving in a country, and offering field programs which are ship run excursions with ship faculty leading them. The community on the ship was nothing I have ever experienced before. We were so close knit and it felt like I was truly in a connected, caring, and welcoming environment. I met the people I never imagined I'd connect with, and they ended up becoming the best connections I've ever made with people. Semester at Sea also helped me get out of my comfort zone which led me to have experiences I would have never imagined I'd have, best example being running a half marathon in Vigo, Spain even though I'm not a runner and have never been a runner. Semester at Sea has given me the world and the opportunity to appreciate it to its fullest. I left the ship with my passport full, but my heart is even fuller with people, memories, and connections I will forever cherish. Semester at Sea was truly the best experience I have ever had and would recommend it to anyone as it was life changing.

Experience of a life time!
July 10, 2026by: Xavier Bonilla - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
One of the most underrated aspect of semester at sea is the ship campus itself. Being able to live so close to your friends and just walking a few flight of stairs to your classroom and being able to sit down with your professors for lunch is such an amazing experience. It's eternal sunsets, it's endless travel stories from your friends, it's lifetime of memories. Highly recommend. One of the best decisions I made. And still day dream about this experience, still talk and travel to meet my SAS friends 4 years later.

I had the time of my life
July 10, 2026by: Zowie Jackson - United StatesProgram: Semester at Sea: Global Study Abroad on a Floating Campus
I have not experienced anything like semester at sea before, therefore giving me a whole lot of different lenses to look at the world with. I completely enjoyed my experience and understand the importance of understanding others concerns, communication, communities, and countries. A overall wonderful experience that has changed my views as well as the way I live and who I am as a person.

My LTL experience 🙏
June 05, 2026by: PJ Stone - AustraliaRecently, I completed the Introduction to Vietnamese Language Training course at LTL Language School, and I can confidently say that it was one of the most rewarding educational experiences I have undertaken. As someone who regularly travels to Vietnam and has a strong interest in Vietnamese culture, history, and people, I wanted a practical language course that would provide a solid foundation for communicating with the local community. LTL Language School exceeded my expectations in every way. One of the aspects that impressed me most was how much I was able to learn in such a short period of time. The course was structured in a logical and practical manner, allowing me to quickly build a strong foundation in Vietnamese pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structure, and everyday conversation. Rather than simply memorising words and phrases, I developed a genuine understanding of how the language works and how it is used in real-life situations. The lessons were engaging, interactive, and tailored to practical communication. Throughout the course, I learned how to introduce myself, ask and answer common questions, navigate daily situations, and communicate more effectively with Vietnamese speakers. I also gained valuable insights into Vietnamese customs, traditions, etiquette, and cultural norms, which helped me better understand the country and its people. The confidence I gained from the course was significant. Before attending, I was often hesitant to speak Vietnamese for fear of making mistakes. By the end of the training, I felt far more comfortable interacting with local people, ordering food, asking for directions, engaging in simple conversations, and demonstrating respect through the use of appropriate language and cultural understanding. This has made my time in Vietnam far more enjoyable and meaningful. A major reason for my positive experience was my teacher, John. He is an exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated instructor who clearly has a passion for teaching Vietnamese. His patience, encouragement, and ability to explain even the most challenging aspects of the language made learning both enjoyable and effective. John’s teaching style creates a relaxed and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and practising their language skills. His deep understanding of both the Vietnamese language and culture added tremendous value to every lesson. Beyond being an excellent teacher, he is also extremely friendly, approachable, and genuinely invested in the success of his students. I would strongly recommend LTL Language School to anyone considering learning Vietnamese, regardless of their current level of experience. Whether you are travelling, working, conducting business, or simply interested in the language and culture, the school provides an excellent learning environment and highly effective teaching methods. If you have the opportunity to study at LTL, I would particularly recommend requesting John as your instructor. His professionalism, expertise, and commitment to his students make him an outstanding teacher and an invaluable guide on your Vietnamese language learning journey. I look forward to continuing my Vietnamese studies and building upon the excellent foundation that LTL Language School and John have helped me establish.

PJ, hat is a brilliant transformation and John will be thrilled to read this. Thank you for such a generous review and we hope to see you back at LTL soon. Keep up the great work!! LTL Team
An Unforgettable Two-Week Language Experience
May 30, 2026by: Skai Meng Schwabbaur - SwitzerlandMy two-week language course was an amazing experience. During this time, I learned a lot and improved my language skills significantly, especially thanks to my teacher, Linh. She was very supportive, patient, and made every lesson interesting and enjoyable. I was also very lucky to stay with such a wonderful host family. They were incredibly kind, welcoming, and made me feel at home from the very first day. Thanks to them, I was able to experience the local culture and practice the language in everyday situations. Everything was very well organized, which made the entire experience smooth and stress-free. Overall, it was a fantastic opportunity, and I am grateful for everything I learned and experienced during these two weeks. I will always remember this great time.

A great teacher and a wonderful host family in two weeks. That is the full LTL experience right there! We will make sure Linh sees this and we hope to welcome you back soon. LTL Team

Perfect bildungsurlaub
April 22, 2026by: Tiền hai dang Quach - GermanyI had a great class 1v1 with My Linh, she was really accurate by analysing my skills & needs and customizing my individual class. I was working really hard with her on my reading skills, and my cultural knowledge. She taught me a lot about Vietnamese culture, literature, and language. She was also really accurate with my pronounciation and corrected me whenever I made a mistake.
Love to hear it!! Thanks so much for leaving such a wonderful review about Teacher My Linh :) Hope you keep improving your Vietnamese! LTL Team
A well planned course!
March 30, 2026by: Koichi Karl Kamimura - PhilippinesProgram: AVSE-TESOL Government-Accredited Program in Vietnam
I started off not knowing much about what to do or where to go especially for the requirements and everything but AVSE-TESOL helped out so much. They made sure to give me guidance on areas pre-course that I was a bit hazy on even before I actually paid for anything. Peter was already helpful along with his wonderful staff. When I got there, they made sure that everything was prepared exactly on the scheduled day. There were no delays at all and all of my classmates had an easy time during the orientation. Mick introduced us all to each other and made sure we all got acquainted with each other and the upcoming program. During the course, Mick (our instructor) made sure everyone was on the same page every single hour and every single day. He answered every question and made sure no one was left behind. He made it very enjoyable for all of us. Learning is the easiest part and the only hard part was nerves before teaching practicum which turned out to be easy because of how well Mick prepared all of us. All in all, I would recommend this course to my friends and to anyone who wants to come to Vietnam and get their TESOL certificate. AVSE will take care of you and make it fun for you at the same time. I made great friends along the way and learned a whole lot!
Exceeded my expectations!

This course was genuinely excellent and exceeded all my expectations. I enjoyed every aspect of it, especially the fact that it included so much practical training, which made a huge difference in building my confidence. Mick (the trainer) was exceptionally supportive throughout, and the entire team created a very safe, encouraging, and enjoyable learning environment. The guidance, structure, and hands-on practice made the whole journey smooth and rewarding from start to finish. Highly recommend AVSE!
I would like to step out of my comfort zone and experience something new.
November 03, 2025by: Duyen Huynh - VietnamProgram: AVSE-TESOL Government-Accredited Program in Vietnam
Before joining the TESOL course, I was an office worker and had never taught English before. The course helped me gain confidence and learn how to prepare effective lesson plans. The trainer was incredibly supportive, guiding me step by step toward becoming a professional teacher. The staff were also very helpful throughout the program. I’m truly grateful for this course—it gave me the chance to practice teaching, and now I feel confident standing in front of my own class. I highly recommend this TESOL program to anyone.

Really nice experience!

Return to the culture of origin
October 26, 2025by: Goupy Maëlle - FranceHello everyone, I have chosen to trust the LTL school in Hanoi to learn as much as possible about the Vietnamese language because I was born here but grew up in France. Separated from this culture at a very young age, I wanted to make this trip to Vietnam in order to be able to reconnect with my roots. Thank you very much to this organization for being able to exist and to the learning follow-up of my teacher named Jasmine.
Super happy to hear we could help you reconnect with your roots, Goupy! We loved having you in Vietnam and we hope to see you again. LTL Team
