Student Life
Ho Chi Minh is a booming metropolis, when it comes to cities in Vietnam. The city life is visible in many ways, and upscale cafés and restaurants are located on almost any corner of any street. There are an array of places for students to spend their free time in, from coffee shops to gyms to markets to shopping centers.
Both local and international students enjoy having their own means of transportation in Ho Chi Minh, although public transportation is affordable and easy to use. Many students find it is convenient to rent or purchase a motorbike, which are the major form of transportation in the city. However, the bus system covers most locations in the city, including downtown area, markets, and shopping centers, for about $1.00 per ride and there are taxis and motorbikes for hire as well.
Costs
Study abroad programs in Ho Chi Minh vary in cost based on what is included and how long the program lasts; normally, programs that include accommodation, visa fees, excursions, medical insurance, and textbooks cost between $15,000 and $20,000 for a semester long program, while a summer program may be $5,000 to $10,000. There are a variety of funding opportunities that students can take advantage of for study abroad in Ho Chi Minh, including many scholarships.
Living in Ho Chi Minh is quite cheap compared to most Western cities. An average meal costs between $1 and $3 from basic restaurants, but meals can be up to $10 or $15 in more expensive places. When it comes to housing, apartments vary from $70 for a single to $200 for a double room, but could be much more expensive in higher end apartment buildings.
Accommodation & Visas
Institutions that provider study abroad programs in Ho Chi Minh often arrange housing for international students, or at the very least a list of options. However, students usually get to choose which housing arrangement they would like to have. Students will find that there are a number of accommodation options to choose from within a 10 to 15 minute walk to everything they need in the city. Along with homestays, there are also various types of apartments and guest houses where students can choose to stay. There are also some institutions that provide accommodation on campus in the form of dorms are other student housing, ranging from single bedroom units to shared three to five bedroom apartments, for those with a sociable personality. All on campus apartments are typically fully furnished and well maintained.
International students will need a visa in order to study abroad in Ho Chi Minh. Most institutions will arrange the necessary visa for students prior to arrival. The fee for a student visa is $45 for a three-month single entry and $95 for multiple entry. Students who are studying abroad in Ho Chi Minh for longer durations will need to consult their program provider or university on the best visa arrangement for them.
Travel Tips
The Local People. As a rapidly developing city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh is a foreigner’s haven. Locals are friendly and very open to foreigners, especially international students. Although locals speak limited English, they will still try to help foreigners in any way they can. Learning basic Vietnamese will be very helpful for students studying in Ho Chi Minh.
Weather. Ho Chi Minh has a tropical climate with two seasons: wet and dry. The hottest days are in April and May, while coolest in December to March. In the wet season, May to October, heavy rains are prevalent during the afternoon.

August 06, 2026by: Lea Vu - United StatesI honestly thought that taking extra language classes after my regular school day was going to be the most boring thing in the entire world, but studying Vietnamese at LTL Language School in Saigon turned out to be the absolute highlight of my week. When my parents first signed me up, I was picturing a super strict classroom where I would have to stare at a giant textbook and repeat grammar rules until my brain turned to mush. But it was nothing like that at all! My teacher was this really cool, energetic girl who instantly made the classroom feel like a fun hangout spot instead of a boring school. I was super nervous on the first day because Vietnamese sounds really hard with all the different tones, and I was terrified of sounding silly when I tried speaking. But the second she walked in, she just had this super bubbly and hilarious personality that made me actually want to pay attention. She realized right away that sitting still and just reading pages wasn't going to work for me, so she completely changed the way I learned. The whole process was so interactive and packed with so many activities that I usually forgot I was even studying. Instead of giving me long, boring lists of words to memorize, she used the most amazing flashcards to make everything stick in my head. She would bring in these huge stacks of colorful flashcards and we would all make our own flashcards as well. Every time we had to learn a new word, there was a cute or funny drawing to go with it. Because I am a very visual person, seeing the pictures right next to the words helped me memorize them so much faster. I never had to go home and stare at a boring vocabulary list because I could just close my eyes and remember the funny cartoon on the flashcard. She even let me make my own flashcards sometimes, and I would doodle my own little pictures on blank cards with colorful markers. She totally encouraged it and would help me come up with silly ways to draw the new vocabulary words. It made learning the words feel way more like working on a fun art project than actually doing homework. She was always coming up with creative mini-games to make the learning process feel super exciting. We played so many different mini-games that the time always just flew by. One of my favorites was saying a word at the same time as the other, if got different answers we have to make sentence with it. I had to shout the word out loud with the perfect tone to keep the points and to make sure the other said the same thing. Sometimes we played memory games where she would say a word and the rest has to repeat and add more words after, we eventually forget most of them at the end because there were too many , but it was good for the brain to memorize them this way.something using only the Vietnamese words I had already learned. We even played mini-games to help me get the hang of the crazy tones. She made learning fun ! We were constantly laughing, and she never made me feel bad if I forgot a word or messed up a sentence during a game. If I got something wrong, we would just giggle about it, and she would shuffle the flashcards and let me try again. Because of all these fun methods and mini-games, my brain just absorbed the vocabulary so naturally. I actually know how to speak quite a bit of Vietnamese now, and I can confidently order my own drinks or buy my own snacks at the convenience store near my apartment. The whole learning process at LTL was just incredible because my teacher put so much effort into making sure I was always engaged, smiling, and actually enjoying myself. If you are my age and your parents want you to learn the language without feeling like you are trapped in summer school, I really recommend this place because you will end up having the best time while learning so much. Die Töne, die Grammatik und die ganz eigene Phonetik verlangen einem zu Beginn einiges ab. Umso wichtiger ist es, eine Sprachschule zu finden, die einen auf dieser Reise optimal begleitet. Nach meinen eigenen Erfahrungen vor Ort kann ich mit Überzeugung sagen: **Die LTL Language School in Ho Chi Minh City ist einfach top!** **Der Registrierungsprozess: Ein kleiner Umweg mit hervorragendem Support** Ehrlich gesagt verläuft der erste Schritt – die Registrierung und Organisation im Vorfeld – nicht ganz ohne Hürden. Der Prozess ist streckenweise etwas umständlich und erfordert etwas Geduld sowie das Ausfüllen verschiedener Formulare. Doch genau an dieser Stelle zeigt sich bereits die große Stärke der Schule: **das Team vor Ort und im Hintergrund.** Die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter sind extrem hilfsbereit, stets ansprechbar und antworten zügig auf alle Fragen. Wenn es an einer Stelle im Anmeldungsprozess hakte, war sofort jemand zur Stelle, um Unklarheiten zu beseitigen und mich Schritt für Schritt durch die Bürokratie zu begleiten. Man fühlt sich bereits vor dem ersten Schultag bestens aufgehoben. **Unterricht auf höchstem Niveau: Ein riesiges Lob an Lehrer Tri!** Das Herzstück jeder Sprachschule ist natürlich der Unterricht – und hier glänzt die LTL Language School ganz besonders. Mein absolutes Highlight und der Hauptgrund für meinen Lernerfolg war mein Dozent. >**Ein sehr großes Lob an dieser Stelle an Lehrer Tri!** Herr Tri versteht es meisterhaft, die vietnamesische Sprache mit unglaublichem **Engagement**, enormer **Geduld** und einer großen Portion Begeisterung zu vermitteln. Vietnamesisch ist bekanntlich eine Tonsprache, bei der schon die kleinste Abweichung in der Betonung die Bedeutung eines Wortes komplett verändern kann. Das führt zu Beginn zwangsläufig zu vielen Fehlern. Doch Lehrer Tri schafft eine Lernatmosphäre, in der man sich zu jedem Zeitpunkt wohl und ermutigt fühlt. * **Geduld & Präzision:** Er nimmt sich die nötige Zeit, um schwierige Laute wieder und wieder zu üben, bis die Aussprache sitzt. * **Praxisnah & Lebendig:** Der Unterricht ist nicht trocken oder starr nach Lehrbuch aufgebaut, sondern nimmt immer wieder Bezug auf den echten Alltag in Vietnam. Dadurch lernt man nicht nur die Sprache, sondern versteht auch die Kultur und die Denkweise der Menschen vor Ort viel besser. * **Motivation:** Durch seine mitreißende Art macht selbst das Büffeln von Grammatik und Vokabeln richtig Spaß. **Fazit und Weiterempfehlung** Wer vorhat, nach Saigon zu reisen und dort ernsthaft Vietnamesisch zu lernen – egal ob für den Urlaub, den Beruf oder einen längeren Aufenthalt –, ist hier an der richtigen Adresse. Die Kombination aus einer familiären Atmosphäre, einem extrem engagierten Support-Team und herausragenden Lehrkräften macht den Unterschied. Life Changing Experience

I graduated from high school a semester early, and the only way I wanted to spend my semester was by being abroad. I've known about Semester at Sea for around 6 years and I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. I searched up the requirements to be accepted and luckily fit all the requirements most importantly being 18, so immediately I applied. I then got an email back the next morning saying I got accepted into the program and that email brought me to tears in the middle of one of my classes. I couldn't wait to board the MV World Odyssey and embark on this journey of a lifetime. On the ship, I gained so much knowledge about different cultures and I was able to be fully immersed in them, not just sticking to the touristy things offered. Semester at Sea does an amazing job keeping the students' safety in country as a priority with having mandatory “Pre-Port meetings” the night before arriving in a country, and offering field programs which are ship run excursions with ship faculty leading them. The community on the ship was nothing I have ever experienced before. We were so close knit and it felt like I was truly in a connected, caring, and welcoming environment. I met the people I never imagined I'd connect with, and they ended up becoming the best connections I've ever made with people. Semester at Sea also helped me get out of my comfort zone which led me to have experiences I would have never imagined I'd have, best example being running a half marathon in Vigo, Spain even though I'm not a runner and have never been a runner. Semester at Sea has given me the world and the opportunity to appreciate it to its fullest. I left the ship with my passport full, but my heart is even fuller with people, memories, and connections I will forever cherish. Semester at Sea was truly the best experience I have ever had and would recommend it to anyone as it was life changing.

One of the most underrated aspect of semester at sea is the ship campus itself. Being able to live so close to your friends and just walking a few flight of stairs to your classroom and being able to sit down with your professors for lunch is such an amazing experience. As someone who regularly travels to Vietnam and has a strong interest in Vietnamese culture, history, and people, I wanted a practical language course that would provide a solid foundation for communicating with the local community. LTL Language School exceeded my expectations in every way. One of the aspects that impressed me most was how much I was able to learn in such a short period of time. The course was structured in a logical and practical manner, allowing me to quickly build a strong foundation in Vietnamese pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structure, and everyday conversation. Rather than simply memorising words and phrases, I developed a genuine understanding of how the language works and how it is used in real-life situations. The lessons were engaging, interactive, and tailored to practical communication. Throughout the course, I learned how to introduce myself, ask and answer common questions, navigate daily situations, and communicate more effectively with Vietnamese speakers. I also gained valuable insights into Vietnamese customs, traditions, etiquette, and cultural norms, which helped me better understand the country and its people. The confidence I gained from the course was significant. Before attending, I was often hesitant to speak Vietnamese for fear of making mistakes. By the end of the training, I felt far more comfortable interacting with local people, ordering food, asking for directions, engaging in simple conversations, and demonstrating respect through the use of appropriate language and cultural understanding. This has made my time in Vietnam far more enjoyable and meaningful. A major reason for my positive experience was my teacher, John. He is an exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated instructor who clearly has a passion for teaching Vietnamese. His patience, encouragement, and ability to explain even the most challenging aspects of the language made learning both enjoyable and effective. John’s teaching style creates a relaxed and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and practising their language skills. An Unforgettable Two-Week Language Experience

During this time, I learned a lot and improved my language skills significantly, especially thanks to my teacher, Linh. She was very supportive, patient, and made every lesson interesting and enjoyable. I was also very lucky to stay with such a wonderful host family. They were incredibly kind, welcoming, and made me feel at home from the very first day. Thanks to them, I was able to experience the local culture and practice the language in everyday situations. Everything was very well organized, which made the entire experience smooth and stress-free. They made sure to give me guidance on areas pre-course that I was a bit hazy on even before I actually paid for anything. Peter was already helpful along with his wonderful staff. When I got there, they made sure that everything was prepared exactly on the scheduled day. There were no delays at all and all of my classmates had an easy time during the orientation. Mick introduced us all to each other and made sure we all got acquainted with each other and the upcoming program. During the course, Mick (our instructor) made sure everyone was on the same page every single hour and every single day. He answered every question and made sure no one was left behind. He made it very enjoyable for all of us. Learning is the easiest part and the only hard part was nerves before teaching practicum which turned out to be easy because of how well Mick prepared all of us. All in all, I would recommend this course to my friends and to anyone who wants to come to Vietnam and get their TESOL certificate. AVSE will take care of you and make it fun for you at the same time. I made great friends along the way and learned a whole lot!

This course was genuinely excellent and exceeded all my expectations. I enjoyed every aspect of it, especially the fact that it included so much practical training, which made a huge difference in building my confidence. Before joining the TESOL course, I was an office worker and had never taught English before. The course helped me gain confidence and learn how to prepare effective lesson plans. The trainer was incredibly supportive, guiding me step by step toward becoming a professional teacher. The staff were also very helpful throughout the program. I’m truly grateful for this course—it gave me the chance to practice teaching, and now I feel confident standing in front of my own class. I highly recommend this TESOL program to anyone.

Although LTL doesn’t yet have a physical campus in Hanoi, the school runs its operations there extremely smoothly. The LTL team was incredibly organized and supportive—they helped arrange my airport transfers, taught me how to use the Grab ride service (Vietnam’s version of Uber), and placed me with a wonderful Vietnamese host family. Their attention to detail made my stay easy and enjoyable, so I could focus entirely on learning the language and culture. My teacher, Thuý Hiền, was exceptional. She’s patient, engaging, and knows exactly how to help students build confidence in speaking Vietnamese. One of the highlights of my course was participating in what LTL calls “language safaris”—teacher-guided field trips around Hanoi to explore cultural and historical sites while practicing Vietnamese in real situations. These safaris were fun, educational, and a great way to apply what I’d learned in class. I highly recommend both LTL Language School and Teacher Thuý Hiền (Jasmine) to anyone serious about learning Vietnamese. Studying in Hanoi was an unforgettable experience, and I can’t wait to return!
