How to Study Sports Science Abroad
Why
In sports all over the world, teams are increasingly looking to the systematic study of science and statistics in order to gain an edge on opponents. Wherever your ultimate career aspirations lie, be it in coaching, management, or physical therapy, having a strong background in sports science has become a huge boon to prospective candidates. By taking your studies abroad, you can further enhance your qualifications by challenging yourself, entering into a diverse environment, and proving you have the ambition to do big things.
Locations
While some universities around the world will not offer the Sports Science major specifically, almost all will offer courses in related fields such as biology, physical sciences, and psychology. Where you choose to study abroad then is entirely up to you, as no one particular location can be argued better than another.
One way to go about it is to consider the sporting cultures of your target destinations. Every country has different sports which serve as national past times. For instance baseball is big in North and Central America, as well as Japan and South Korea. Cricket, on the other hand, serves as its counterpart in countries such as the UK, South Africa, India, and Australia. You get the gist of it – if you are interested in an education within a particular sport, then try somewhere new in the world where that sport is also a big deal.
You could also generalize, and instead of focusing on a particular sport, aim for the schools with the best Sports Science or Physical Science programs. Schools like the University of Toronto, University of Tokyo, and Imperial College London are all examples of places where you can receive a top notch education in the field.
These schools obviously represent the cream of the crop, and there are hundreds of other places where you can study abroad and get a great Sports Science education. In the end, the most important thing is that you go somewhere that intrigues you both culturally and academically – after all, studying abroad is about much more than just school!
Program Options
Sports Science is a very diverse field, and there are a variety of different specialized paths which you can follow within the discipline. Sports Psychology, Sports Nutrition, Physical Therapy, Physical Education, and Sports Management are all potential areas where you can create a niche in Sports Science.
Even if your target school for studying abroad does not offer classes in these specialized areas, there are usually a large amount of general education requirements involved in the Sports Science major which might be offered instead. Classes in general Life and Physical Sciences can often apply towards your major back home, so you do not have to worry about missing out on credit while abroad.
The language barrier is something you should always consider when deciding where to study abroad. Many study abroad programs have their own satellite schools in regions of the world where English is not the medium of education, but this means that you might be missing out on the larger course catalogues of local universities. While some specialized programs are indeed focused on Sports Science, if you want to take applicable classes while abroad, your best bet is usually to do so somewhere where you are proficient in the local language.
Travel Tips
Broaden Your Field. Different countries and cultures cheer on different sports, giving you the opportunity to expand your field of knowledge about Sports Science in general. The larger the sample size, the deeper your insight into the science of athletics and fitness.
Networking Opportunity. Studying abroad gives you the chance to meet peers and mentors in your field from all over the world. Not only will you form valuable connections for the future, but you will form friendships which last long beyond the return home.
Adventure Time. Studying abroad is, in its simplest form, a great adventure. Far beyond the academics which it entails, this is your chance to learn a lot about the world at large, and where you fit into it.

My experience with Nomads Physical Therapy
July 29, 2026by: Natalia Munoz - MexicoProgram: Physical Therapy Observation Program in Merida, Mexico
My experience with the Nomads Physical Therapy program was very positive and meaningful. One of the best parts of the program was having the opportunity to complete observation hours and gain experience in a different physical therapy setting. It allowed me to learn more about the profession while also seeing how physical therapy is practiced in Mexico compared to the United States. I found it especially interesting to learn about the similarities and differences between physical therapy in both countries. I was also able to understand how different challenges can affect patients depending on where they live, including access to healthcare, resources, and other factors that can influence their treatment and recovery. This experience helped me appreciate the importance of adapting care to each person's individual situation. Another great part of the program was meeting new people and making connections with other students and professionals. I was able to make new friends and create relationships that made the experience even more enjoyable. Everyone was welcoming, and I felt that I was able to learn not only from the physical therapy experiences but also from the people around me. The weekend excursions were also a very interesting and informative part of the program. They gave us the opportunity to explore new places, learn about the culture and history, and experience more of what Mexico has to offer outside of the clinical setting. Overall, Nomads Physical Therapy was a very good experience that allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. I gained valuable observation experience, learned more about physical therapy in different countries, met great people, and created memories and connections that I will carry with me in the future. I would definitely recommend this program to other physical therapy students looking for an educational and enjoyable experience abroad.

July 29, 2026by: Lizbeth Morales - United StatesI was very very hesitant on applying and even once I got accepted I was very skeptical about joining BUT I truly had the best time ever! Best directors ever too!!!

Amazing Program!
July 28, 2026by: angelina garcia - United StatesProgram: Physical Therapy Observation Program in Merida, Mexico
This is truly an amazing program lead by people who care about students and the importance of global perspectives. Me and 6 other students spent our time at Merida Yucatan, MX where we gained 75 verified observational hours shadowing licensed physical therapists in diverse and hands-on clinical settings. Cultural immersion was a pivotal theme in our time in Merida learning about the different yet important components physical therapy has to offer across borders. We also had the opportunity for weekend guided excursions to cenotes, Mayan ruins ,and local landmarks .This program not only created lasting friendships but also built my initiative, adaptability and global perspective necessary for my future in Physical Therapy! I’d highly recommend to anyone interested @nomad.physicaltherapy

July 16, 2026by: Breanna Gotch - United StatesMy experience studying abroad in Molise Italy was absolutely life-changing. Grazie, Breanna! Colli really is beautiful and it's such a great partnership!
Once in a lifetime opportunity
July 14, 2026by: Magnolia Ford - United StatesThis program gave me an opportunity that I wouldn’t have been able to do by myself. I had learned a lot about being the best Speech Language Pathologist should look like and continue that with my career moving forward. I would encourage anyone is capable of going on a journey to see it from a different perspective.
Incredible experience!
July 03, 2026by: Maggie Hernandez - United StatesThe Molise Italian Studies program was a wonderful way to be immersed in the Molise region, some of the Puglia region, and Rome. By visiting some of the smaller, lesser-known areas in these regions, I got to see firsthand how people live, work, and support their communities through the activities and social work experiences. I can say I grew as a person and have a new outlook on my everyday life at home. It was evident that Italians in these regions value community and connection. I appreciated the opportunities to participate in activities at some of the agencies, such as at LAI and in Capracotta, rather than simply observing the activity. Our tour leader, Andrea, was kind, patient, organized, and knowledgeable throughout the entire trip.
Grazie, Maggie! We are so glad to hear this trip made such an impact on you, and we can't wait to hear about your plans moving forward!
So much fun!
July 02, 2026by: Alex Santoro - United StatesI had an absolutely amazing time; I made so many incredible memories that I truly won't ever forget. The friendships I made were so awesome, and the opportunities to experience true culture were life-changing. Both of my professors were absolutely wonderful, and our guide was incredible. Everyone was so amazing and truly tried their best to give us the most rewarding experience possible, and they exceeded my dreams.
Grazie, Alex!
Wonderful, meaningful trip!
July 01, 2026by: Jen McLaughlin - United StatesMyself and my colleague brought a group of ten university students on a trip with Molise, and we could not be happier! Our guides were knowledgeable and kind. Every single person we encountered along the way as we traveled was welcoming and gracious. So many laughs were shared amongst our students and the Italian community, and we never once felt as if we were not in steady, capable hands with the company. Upon returning home from Italy, we immediately arranged our next trip with Scott and Megan, and plan to continue this trip regularly to allow students to continue to experience all the amazing things our first group did.

Thank you, Jen! Looking forward to working with Wilkes again in 2027!
Abroad Dreams Come True
July 01, 2026by: Cialyn Floyd - United StatesAs a student who dreamed of going abroad for years, I never considered a trip like this would be at my fingertips. Many know that traveling abroad is a big decision because it involves location costs return of investment and with being in school of the timeline of when it’s going to happen. I decided to make my minor Hotel restaurant management sophomore year of college, but wasn’t sure of how I was still going to make my broad dream come true. Fall semester of 2024 when I was in one of my HRM studies I wondered what options there could be to study the subject abroad. That’s when I discovered the Molise Italian Studies program NAU in Italy: Economics of Gastronomy. After promptly siding up, I was introduced to a fully guided program with pre-arrival meetings that fully explained the details and necessary precautions of going abroad. Which included an itinerary of the daily activities the lessons that would be focused on and places of accommodation. All details, which transferred extremely well into the actual trip. Each lesson was fully in depth and offered different opportunities. My favorite day was probably the day we visited Di Iorio Tartufi - Italian Truffle where we learned how truffles were safely found and made into a meal. I came home with at least 5 jars!! I highly enjoyed the environment, the greenery, and absolutely the delicious assortment of truffle products. At the end of the day, this program offered me a week of excitement and verity of locations across molise. I couldn’t have asked for a better program to introduce me to the world of traveling.
Grazie, Cialyn! So glad to be a part of your HRM journey (& we dream of truffles too)!
Boss semester
June 27, 2026by: Ezra Bradford - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad Semester Program
I had a pretty great semester at UL. I thoroughly enjoyed the classes and the professors, but also learned a lot about myself and the Irish people. I joined the Christian Union pretty early on and was welcomed into fellowship with that group. I accompanied some friends of that group into smaller towns I may not have otherwise visited and helped lead churches playing piano. I was welcomed into homes and I really felt loved. I also got to see much of the countryside and felt it easy to travel around to sight see. My time in Ireland is a time where I grew in knowing myself but also my understanding of the world. I loved learning Irish traditions, culture, and history, and I know that I could never know nearly as much by staying home.
Life changing!
June 23, 2026by: Graziella Hartman - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad Semester Program
In my time here, I learned so much about what I am capable of and what the world has to offer. This is largely due to the support of the study abroad team and resources like the writing, counseling, and health centers. I am so proud of all I have accomplished, be it in academics and the things I learned, and in stepping out of my comfort zone and exploring more about Ireland, Irish culture, and how I immerse myself in it. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this possible for me.

Academic experience was questionable but rest was amazing!
June 02, 2026by: Parsa Mallik - BangladeshProgram: USAC Sweden: Vaxjo/Kalmar - Undergraduate & Graduate Courses
I did not have the best academic experience and would recommend taking only fun classes specifically designed for exchange students, unless you are highly motivated, regardless of what your peers are doing. Other than that, my time in Sweden was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I was able to make lifelong friends, travel A LOT, and experience things in a way that is only possible during studying abroad. Vaxjo is a very clean, friendly, and convenient city, amazing for nature enthusiasts. Coming here was definitely one of the best decisions I ever made.
The best four months of my studies spent at UL!
May 26, 2026by: Antonia Heil - AustriaProgram: Study Abroad Semester Program
It was honestly the best experience it could have been - Great organization of the study abroad program, easy module selection, broad offer of modules, fun and regular campus activities, a bunch of reserved housing spaces for international students (be fast though) and a great study abroad team that helps with all your worries! I made so many good friends and enjoyed the spring semester immensely. 10/10 would recommend. the only negative part is that Ireland is a pretty expensive country as it is... UL offers a lot of cheaper food options though, that helped!
Transformative and Unforgettable Experience
May 07, 2026by: Madeline L.Program: CIEE Semester in Merida, Mexico
This experience changed my life. I feel like I grew in ways here I didn’t know was possible. I learned so much both inside and outside the classroom. I met the nicest most amazing people and made memories to last a lifetime. I will be forever grateful for this experience.
Barcelona SAE + Estudios Hispánicos was amazing!
April 30, 2026by: Maeve Lovell - United StatesI had a wonderful experience with Barcelona SAE! They have been a huge help in every step of my study abroad experience, from coordinating my housing, providing an academic mentor to turn to with any questions, their curated website full of resources and recommendations, and hosting various social events throughout the semester to connect with fellow students. They made my transition to and time in Barcelona so much easier. I also can’t recommend the UB track enough. I felt like it was the perfect balance between rigorous language instruction and accommodation for non-native speakers, and all the professors were so enthusiastic and responsive to any questions or confusion. I can confidently say that my Spanish skills grew this semester largely due to my classes at UB, so if you’re looking for a great opportunity to improve your language skills, I would highly recommend!
Great Professors and Sevilla Activities
April 29, 2026by: Jose C.The professors are really good to teach the classes and as persons, Sevilla is a beautiful place, all the activities CIEE has as trips, sports, and learning more about the community and culture of Sevilla. That is why I would recommend CIEE.
Exceeded my expectations!
April 26, 2026by: Ilana Mac Lennan - United StatesThis program truly exceeded my expectations. From the program staff to the professors themselves, everyone is so excited about assisting us students and making our experience so special. My housing was amazing and other students felt the same, especially with the apartments and home stays.
Fantastic program for cultural immersion
April 26, 2026by: Akira Li - ChinaThis program is for students who want to strike a balance between cultural immersion and familiarity. The program is very well organized with cultural activities and excursions every week to help students explore Barcelona and its surrounding areas with fellow students from the US. I especially enjoyed the “dinner with a local host family” event where I got to dine with a local family and learned more about Barcelona from the local perspective. Besides organizing these events, the program also sends out a weekly newsletter about what’s happening in Barcelona so students can explore on their own. April 18, 2026by: Maria Huerta - United StatesStudying abroad was more than travel, it was learning how to exist between languages, cultures, and systems of power. Coming from a background shaped by migration, the experience felt deeply personal. Walking through new cities, I began to notice not only differences in culture, but in how societies are organized, who has access, and how opportunity is distributed. It made me reflect on policy beyond textbooks—how decisions made in offices translate into real lives, real barriers, and real possibilities. I saw how history, governance, and identity intersect in everyday spaces, from public institutions to conversations with people from different backgrounds. There were moments of uncertainty, of not fully belonging, but also moments of clarity where I understood that navigating these spaces is itself a form of political awareness. I didn’t just learn about the world, I learned how to read it, question it, and imagine how it could be better. This experience didn’t just expand my perspective it gave me a deeper sense of purpose. It reminded me why I chose to study political science, and why I want to be part of the conversations and decisions that shape our global future. https://www.instagram.com/huerta_mmx/

Great Program and Very Immersive
March 31, 2026by: Charles Keehan - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion - Study and Intern
I have definitely had a great time studying with UDC and Linguistic Horizons. The arrangements and trips provided by Nicole are always very fun, safe, and great new experiences to have. My host family is very nice and caring, and I have greatly improved my Spanish speaking, learning, and understanding skills through communicating with them daily. Nicole is very easy to reach and helpful in answering all questions. Would highly recommend!
Muchas gracias, Charles :)
