Study Abroad Programs in Mauritius

Mauritius isn’t your typical study abroad spot, and that’s what makes it exciting. This small island in the Indian Ocean blends cultures, languages, and ecosystems in ways few places do. Beyond the beaches, you’ll find programs in marine science, sustainability, and global business, plus a whole lot of street food and local color to keep things interesting.

Seamester Study Abroad and Gap Year Voyages

Seamester is the educational adventure of a lifetime! For more than 40 years, we have offered unparalleled educational voyages where students spend a semester at sea sailing between islands, countries, and even continents. We design our programs to provide engaging learning experiences with real outcomes in ways that are impossible to replicate in the traditional classroom. Living as part of a close-knit team on an ocean-going vessel, our students learn fundamental lessons beyond academics: teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility. They receive academic credit from the University of South Florida, along with PADI scuba certifications and IYT sailing certifications. Our programs are designed to inspire students to realize that it’s the journey, not the destination, that matters the most.

How to Study Abroad in Mauritius

Prepare to Study Abroad

Set Goals

Every good adventure needs a bit of intention. You don’t need to have a five-year plan, but a few light goals can help keep you grounded when everything feels new.

  • Learn enough local language to get by. Whether it’s ordering food in Creole or greeting your host in French, even a little effort goes a long way.
  • Say yes to something you’d usually avoid. Maybe that’s a group hike, a cultural dance class, or trying octopus curry. Stretching your comfort zone is where the good stuff happens.
  • Keep track of what surprises you. Journal, voice notes, or even quick bullet lists. Noticing what challenges or delights you can help make sense of it all later.

Understand the benefits

Mauritius isn’t loud about what it offers, but the more time you spend there, the more it gives you to think about.

  • Live the culture. You’ll move between languages, traditions, and perspectives without even leaving your neighborhood. It’s a chance to experience cultural complexity, not just read about it.
  • Learn from the land. If you’re studying climate, biodiversity, or marine science, you won’t need to imagine the challenges. They’re happening right outside the classroom.
  • Smaller means closer. Programs in Mauritius tend to be small, which means more access to faculty, tighter-knit student groups, and more room to ask questions that go beyond the syllabus.

Things to know

A few essentials to keep in mind will go a long way in helping you settle in smoothly.

  • Weather - It’s tropical and humid, with cyclone season running from January to March. Pack light clothing, wear sunscreen, and keep an eye on local forecasts.
  • Payments - The Mauritian rupee is the currency, and cash is still king in many places. Carry a card, but expect to pay with cash in markets and smaller towns.
  • Transportation - Buses are cheap and reliable, covering most of the island. There’s no Uber, so learning local routes early will make life easier.

I just studied abroad with SAS in spring of 2025. To say this experience changed my life would be an understatement. I cannot recommend this enough. The learning opportunities are amazing, the staff and faculty do everything they can to make this your home away from home, and the traveling experiences are ONCE IN A LIFETIME!
