A Guide to Study Abroad in Mozambique

Locations

Because Mozambique is not the first destination many people consider (besides you Glen Coco. You go, Glen Coco), there may be less options for you to choose from. But the awesome and exciting part of that is that you will be creating you own path and experiencing the true essence of life: embracing the unknown. Here are some location options to study abroad in Mozambique.

Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, is a Portuguese inspired (and colonized) coastal city that serves as an ideal study abroad destination in Mozambique. You will find street cafes, shopping opportunities, and the chance for true cultural immersion. As you walk through the Portuguese-influenced architectured streets and buildings, not only will you be able to feel the remnants of the colonized past of the country, but you will also see how the country functions now, in their somewhat recently found freedom.

As a port town, Pemba is the perfect destination to study abroad in Mozambique for undergraduates who are looking to explore white sand beaches, nearby coral reefs, and dolphins, whales and endangered dugongs (similar to manatees). Pemba is located on a peninsula in one of the world’s largest harbors which gives you access to beach life, and also the cultural immersion experience you are looking for in your Mozambique study abroad adventure.

Come to South Africa!!!

I think I was perfectly underprepared for this experience in that the best way to approach this program is to have no expectations, to leave Western perspectives at the door, and to exist as a perpetual student in and beyond the classroom. As an American, one of the most important things to me is learning and experiencing life from completely different perspectives and positionalities. The beauty of this program is that for every difference, there are at least 3 similarities of shared humanity across cultures that made my 3 months of school and work transform into a period of introspection and changemaking that will impact me for a lifetime. I learned a lot about concepts like development theory that help my aspirations of a career in peacemaking, conflict resolution, and diplomacy. Furthermore, I got to begin this career by interning at the #1 continential NGO working on peace and conflict resolution: The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD). It was the experience of a lifetime that has directly impacted my future plans academically and professionally.
