Spend a semester or academic year in Berlin, Germany, with AIFS Abroad. You’ll earn up to 15 credits per semester through a variety of courses studying at Freie Universität. Courses are offered in English and German. If you’re interested in giving back to a local community in Berlin, information on volunteer opportunities will be available once you arrive. Live in either a homestay or student apartment (with a supplemental fee). Homestay students have their own rooms and receive breakfast and dinner daily from their host family. Apartments are single or double occupancy with a shared kitchen, bathroom, and on-site laundry facilities. They will receive a meal allowance, and all students will receive a Mensa card to subsidize the cost of on-campus dining. Cultural and social activities include: • Walking tours • Boat trips • German cooking classes • Visits to the many historical and cultural landmarks in Berlin • Day trip to Potsdam • Day trip to Quedlinburg or Dresden • Week-long trip to a destination in Europe (to be determined just before the start of the semester)

The enviable rival of Paris, Berlin is dripping with Prussian architecture that displays the might of the once-great European power, yet also embodies the qualities one can expect from a modern cosmopolitan center with music, fashion, and delicious restaurants on every corner, sporting local cuisine as well as international dishes from around the world.

At NYU Berlin, you’ll experience the local and international arts scenes while you take courses taught by established Berlin artists and architects. Examine local art and broader global trends in classes such as "Place–Building–Time: The Architecture of Berlin" and "The Art World Today: Berlin and Beyond." You’ll explore the city’s culture in class trips to museums, opera houses, theatres, galleries, markets, and festivals, and gain personal experience working in local arts institutions through NYU Berlin’s internship program. One, in stylish Prenzlauer Berg, houses classrooms, a computer lab, a student lounge, and a group meeting space. The other, at St. Agnes in Kreuzberg, provides studio space for art classes.

With IES Abroad Berlin, students can take their German language skills to the next level. IES offers them the opportunity to take classes at our partner university, Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin. Programs are available in the fall, spring, and entire academic year. Some students can participate in internships in and around the city to broaden their international work experience. The Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) is an intensive academic program through which students can earn credits that may be counted towards their degrees at their home institutions. FUBiS sessions run for three to six weeks and take place both in summer and winter. Students can choose between subject courses (mostly taught in English) and German language and culture courses. The 50+ subject courses are offered within the fields of Architecture, Art History, Politics, Law, History, Media Studies, Economics, Sustainability, Literature, Philosophy, Entrepreneurship, and Music. German language and culture courses are available for up to five different proficiency levels (A1 to C1). Field trips are an integral part of all our courses. In addition, FUBiS offers excursions such as to the Berlin Reichstag building and a river boat tour through downtown Berlin or day trips to Potsdam and Leipzig.

Have the opportunity to study abroad by joining one of our Non-Profit, Low Cost, Direct Study Programs in these top destinations – Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, England, and France. These are offered throughout the year to university-level students from around the globe, with the option to enroll in a weekly, monthly, summer, quarterly, semester, or academic year term. Stay in low-cost housing on campus or at a nearby apartment or hostel. You can also stay with a host family to experience the local way of life in your host country. You can earn academic credit for completing any of our study abroad programs. Upon completion, you will receive (or request) transcripts, certificates, or letters of attendance. The Middlebury School in Germany offers cultural and linguistic immersion through a rigorous curriculum and adherence to the Middlebury Language Pledge. By promising to speak only German abroad, students have the best chance of acquiring fluency and actively engaging in the local environment. While in Berlin, students attend Freie Universität and enroll in an in-house core course. Our expertise ensures efficient learning during classes in Berlin or Düsseldorf, as well as through our online training center, allowing you to learn from the comfort of your own home. Our fun leisure activities combine language and culture, meaning this program supports you optimally for university admission in Germany.

The Semester Program is an integral part of the Degree programs offered by the Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies. This provides participants with comprehensive, tailored learning opportunities in a number of fields related to International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy. Each program features classroom lectures, seminars, and workshops led by experts from the fields of international politics, diplomacy, academia, civil society, and the private sector. The Semester Abroad Program offers the perfect opportunity to learn about the innovative field of Cultural Diplomacy over approximately 90 days. Students attend lectures and other activities, followed by final assignments, which are submitted within 45 days following the active semester period (done from distance). This allows participants, including professionals, with other commitments to participate as non-degree status students. Students enrolled in degree programs in other universities can coordinate with their universities to incorporate the curriculum into their study program and gain credits worth 30 ECTS (full semester credits).
