Antarctica is a wondrous place, the “coldest, windiest, driest, highest, quietest, most remote, and least understood continent on earth.” It has been an object of human speculation for millennia and a prize for explorers, sealers and whalers, scientists, and geostrategists for over two hundred years. Examine this unique corner of the world and get a broad overview of its human and natural history. Special attention is given to Antarctica’s physical and ecological systems, human activity, sustainable tourism, and international collaborations. Attend weekly preparatory lectures online with Antarctic experts from around the globe during the fall semester and work on assignments, including a research essay focusing on a topic related to an area of your interest. Spend the winter break participating in a field study project in Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. The voyage crossing the Drake Passage and exploring the Antarctic Peninsula is a once-in-a-lifetime remote encounter with one of the globe's last frontiers and the scene of important climate, ocean, and environmental study. Non-degree seeking students may now apply for this program through the University of Denver.

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and is located on the shore of the Río de la Plata. It is one of Latin America's most important ports and populous cities. This grand city with wide avenues and a vibrant cosmopolitan flair is seen as more European than Latin American. Its energy and bustle are most evident in the city's center, an epicenter of entertainment, shopping, and café culture. It is built on the original colonial foundations of the Spanish people. This center serves as the location for many and most financial institutions and corporate headquarters. New for Spring 2024: Come study in Argentina's vibrant and exciting capital city, Buenos Aires! Students will enroll in coursework at Universidad de Belgrano, with a concentration on Spanish language and Latin American studies. The Middlebury - C.V. Schools Abroad are characterized by a commitment to language development. Students sign and honor the Language Pledge, promising to speak only the target language during their time abroad. Those already at an advanced level of Spanish come away from the program with superior language skills and the fact that they have gained an authentic study abroad experience. While in Buenos Aires, students enroll directly into one of Argentina's three most respected universities: the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa, the Universidad de Buenos Aires, and the Universidad Torcuato di Tella. They also live in a homestay, which allows them access to the life of a local family. Students are expected to "live the language" through their coursework, extracurricular activities with local peers, internships, or volunteer work in the capital of South America's largest Spanish-speaking country. In addition to different study tracks for intermediate and advanced speakers, we have two special academic tracks—Public Health and Tango and Identity.
