A Guide to Studying Abroad in Buenos Aires

As South America’s second largest city and its most visited international travel destination, it is no wonder why Buenos Aires is perennially one of the most popular places in the world to study abroad. Settled pristinely on the country’s southeastern coastline, Argentina’s capital is often considered the continent’s most “European” city in architectural style, and is additionally infused with a melting pot of cultural influences from all over the world. Come study abroad in Buenos Aires to discover firsthand what it’s all about!

Subjects & Courses

There are two primary routes you can generally take to study abroad in Buenos Aires. The first is enrolling in classes directly at a local university (such as the University of Buenos Aires, one of the most highly regarded on the continent). In order to enroll at an Argentine university you will typically be expected to have a respectable command of the Spanish language, at least so much that you may understand what your professors are lecturing about.

An alternative path is to study at an international or satellite school which is connected to a study abroad program in Buenos Aires. Enrolling in classes at one of these smaller institutions can give you the benefit of an English-taught education by local faculty, along with a course load specifically designed for foreign students. Some structured study abroad programs during the summer time can also take you to multiple destinations throughout the region, with Buenos Aires just one stop among several.

Whichever path you choose, some popular course subjects explored by international students in Buenos Aires include Spanish, history, Latin American studies, psychology, and international relations. Your selection of courses will be much broader at a full university than at a smaller satellite school, but both can provide for a great education nonetheless!

Life in Buenos Aires

With nearly 13 million people calling Buenos Aires their home, Argentina’s capital is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the Americas (following Mexico City, Sao Paulo, and New York). It is also one of just three Latin American cities to be awarded “alpha” global city status, a testament to its strong regional influence and international outlook.

First established as a Spanish colony during the 16th century, Buenos Aires has blossomed since becoming the newly formed nation’s capital in 1880.  It has been a major center of immigration throughout recent history, and today is home to a highly diverse ethnic and cultural population. It also boasts a variety of distinct architectural styles, ranging from colonial to art nouveau to modern.

Because of its cultural richness, the city has been nicknamed the “Paris of South America,” and it won’t be hard to see why while you study abroad in Buenos Aires. From the world-class museums and galleries to a delectable restaurant and café scene to its electric nightlife, international students will certainly not be lacking for immersive opportunity in the capital city. Music, cinema, literature, art – Buenos Aires has long been a flourishing cultural bed for all these pastimes.

Scholarships & Costs

For such a highly influential global city, the costs of living in Buenos Aires are actually quite reasonable by global standards. The local currency is the Argentine peso, which trades at about 14 ARS to $1 USD.  Because South America’s economy is still finding its footing, international students can expect to pay significantly less for living necessities in Buenos Aires than in many other industrialized countries.

Nevertheless, studying abroad can often be an expensive venture, so it is always a good idea to check out available scholarships for information about financial aid opportunities. You should also talk to your home school about the potential for rolling over admission to study abroad in Buenos Aires.

Accommodation & Visas

International students that study abroad in Buenos Aires typically face a variety of different housing alternatives. Homestays are one popular option, giving students a unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in local family life. Living in dormitories is also a great way for students enrolled at a full university to engage fully with campus life. Living in a separate apartment, either individually or with roommates, is lastly a nice option for students who prefer a greater degree of personal autonomy.

Argentine’s visa policy can be a bit complicated, but as a general principle, most students should expect to apply for documentation with the endorsement of their host school of study abroad program in Buenos Aires. For more information on the details of the visa process as it applies to your home country, check out our Argentine Embassy Directory.

Benefits & Challenges

Language Immersion. If you are a student of the Spanish language, you will be amazed at how far your fluency soars while you study abroad in Buenos Aires. Make an effort to speak the language as much as possible, both in and outside the classroom.

Historical Prominence. As a major regional influence, studying abroad in Buenos Aires is a gateway to better understanding the history and modern context of the entire South American continent.

Work Hard, Play Hard. Let’s not forget that studying abroad is as much about exploring personal freedom as about gaining a global education. Put bluntly, you’re going to have a ton of fun in Buenos Aires.
