Working in a tropical paradise
February 24, 2026by: Felicitas Hahn - GermanyProgram: Australia Hotel & Tourism Jobs
I spent a total of 5 months in Australia and did an internship in an Australian hostel for about 3 months. I arrived in Australia at the end of November and started working on one of the Great Barrier Reef islands a few days later. I was an intern supporting the reception team and worked 2 days a week. My main tasks included checking guests in and out, sorting car and snorkel hires and answering calls and emails as well as helping out on the bar whenever needed. I’ve never worked a reception job before but everyone was super friendly and helped me whenever I had any questions. As I was living on site, I also quickly made friends among the other staff and spent most of my free time with them. After a few weeks I decided to pick up some paid shifts in housekeeping mostly to keep myself busy but also to get a little extra money for my travels after my internship. At the very beginning of my time in Australia, I was really overwhelmed by basically everything - it was too hot, too many people and everything seemed so exhausting. However I am really glad that regardless of how I felt, I still made an effort to go out with my roommates, I still made sure to spend lots of time with all the other staff and now, a few months later, they are like my family far from home and I couldn’t be happier to have met them. Apart from the social aspect, living and working on a tropical island feels unreal as well - waking up with a beach right in front of my room or spending my days off doing hikes where I see koalas is something I could’ve never imagined back home. I would definitely recommend doing an internship like that or working abroad for some time, because it not only teaches you what having a job in a different country is like, it also is a one in a lifetime experience of meeting people from all around the world, all in the same situation as oneself.
Best decision
November 27, 2025by: Nuria Frei - SwitzerlandProgram: Australia Hotel & Tourism Jobs
Taking part in this program was honestly one of the best decisions I made for my gap year. The team helped place me in a casual Guest Service/Reception role at a hostel in Byron Bay, and the whole process was smooth and supportive from start to finish. When I first arrived, I worked casual hours on the front desk—checking guests in, answering questions, helping with bookings, and making sure everyone felt welcome. It was a great way to ease into the job, settle into the area, and get comfortable with the hostel environment. After a some time, I was offered full-time hours, which meant more responsibility and more chances to really get involved in the day-to-day running of the hostel. I handled everything from guest check-ins and maintaining common areas and general customer service. It was busy, fun, and no two days were the same. One of the best parts was getting to live on-site with the other staff. It created an instant community—everyone was friendly, supportive, and always up for a surf, a sunset walk, or a spontaneous night out. Living where you work made life so easy, and it really felt like a little family away from home. And Byron Bay… what a place to spend a gap year. On my days off, I’d go to the beach, hike up to the lighthouse, try new cafés, explore the markets, or go for a surf. The town has such a relaxed, positive energy, and it’s impossible not to fall in love with the lifestyle. If you’re thinking about doing a working holiday in Australia, I can’t recommend this program enough. Having help with the placement, the support network, and the chance to step straight into a job and community made the whole experience stress-free and incredibly rewarding. It’s the perfect way to meet new people, gain work experience, and enjoy everything Australia has to offer. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.
My Experience
November 30, 2024by: Scarlett Parker-Booth - United KingdomThe support I received at my internship location from the Beyond Academy mentors was amazing. My accommodation with other interns and students allowed me to widen my social life and experience more things. The actual job itself with amazing people was the perfect job experience to begin the steps into my career.
My Sydney adventure with Beyond Academy
November 30, 2024by: Katharina Krohn - GermanyI had the incredible opportunity to spend 10 weeks in Sydney with Beyond Academy, and I can confidently say it was one of the best experiences of my life. From start to finish, the program exceeded my expectations in every way. Even before the program began, the communication with the Beyond Academy team was excellent. They provided invaluable support with my visa application and ensured the process was smooth and stress-free. Beyond Academy made exploring the city and connecting with others so easy and enjoyable. Their twice-weekly events were absolute highlights—ranging from cultural experiences to social gatherings, they were the perfect way to meet people and immerse myself in Sydney life. Through these events, I made definitely friendships that will last a lifetime. Looking back, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to spend these 10 weeks with Beyond Academy.

Special time of my life!
November 18, 2024by: Hellen Prechtel - GermanyI’ve meet so many great people and I made memories that are going to last forever! The internship made me learn so much about myself and was the greatest experience that I’ve ever had. I am gonna miss so much from this place here and I would recommend it to everyone! I would do it over and over again!
Unforgettable experience!
November 15, 2024by: Marsailie Troup - United KingdomThe social life was great! Bi-weekly events, saw a lot of Sydney in two months! The host company was small but related to my industry of choice. I would recommend this programme to anyone considering an internship abroad!
Best summer in Australia!
October 23, 2023by: Lena Knaus - AustriaIf you are thinking about doing an internship abroad, you should do it with Beyond. Not only do they put you in contact with some incredible companies to intern with, guide you through the process and help you with the visa situation, but once you actually get to the location it's even better. Although the accommodation could have been better, the fellow interns and the community guide make up for it fully. You have a lot of freedom in planning what you want to do during your time in Sydney, but the structure of the activities keep you occupied even if you don't want to plan things yourself. It can be a bit intimidating going abroad, but Beyond Academy makes the experience amazing in every way, and they're fully there for you every step of the way.
An incredible experience for Anyone!
October 16, 2023by: Connor RauserIf you’ve ever wondered what life down under is really like, this is the program for you. Studying abroad has its perks but only when you live and work in a place do you get a sense of what it’s all about. Beyond did a fantastic job matching me with a dream come true of a company, where the connections I made and opportunities I’d been given were worth their weight in gold. Outside of work, the included events (plus a few us interns planned) really helped us to get to know the city and culture. The opera house is a fantastic venue even if you don’t speak the language the show you’re watching is in, and the Blue Mountain Falls are breathtaking, partially because in winter the water is so cold you’ll seize up just a little bit. And if you’re ever feeling crazy, there was a pretty fantastic skydiving company just an hour inland. Good fun, right? Our community coordinator was great, and it often felt like we were meeting a local friend to go explore and get to know the hidden gems (as well as the vegan taco shops). What almost every travel website says is true, Australians are good fun. Everyone we met or talked to was so welcoming, to the point where I was able to make a friend on the beach within 5 minutes of us meeting. Locals were willing to show us about, and were more than proud of their culture and hometowns. Great people, great place, great program.

Great experience!
October 09, 2023by: lily MatthewsHad a really good time with this company in Sydney and we were set up with a really friendly support staff member. It was an incredible city and the company Sydney rep set us up with lots of fun activities where we could explore the city through the perspective of a local and a tourist. The lodge was a bit out of the way across the bridge but it did mean there was a nice view on the way to the city daily. Beyond Academy created a perfect opportunity for travel and work experience which has really enhanced my resume, they set me up with an amazing company and allowed me to give them my input on what places I would and wouldn't work in.
Amazing Sydney Experience
August 13, 2023by: Tristan McMichael - United StatesSince this program is centered on internships, I got to experience two unique communities. One in the workplace and the other with my fellow Beyonders. There was never a dull moment, and I got to experience Sydney to the fullest extent during my 8 week stay. I had the freedom to plan my own events and excursions, as well as participate in the Beyond Academy coordinated events. Our community coordinator was especially great at customizing the activities to our specific group of interns, and the role success team was very supportive in preparation for the internship.
Loved my accommodation and coordinator
May 26, 2023by: Emily Sanchez - United StatesDuring the placement process, The Intern Group only had one mechanical engineering option to offer me at a company based in Colombia and had to switch to a fully remote position. The situation was unfortunate because of the time zone differences and the workload was very independent. This wasn’t the internship I hoped for but it definitely challenged me professionally. The people that arrived the same time as I did + the accommodation made the whole experience worthwhile. Our experience coordinator, Erika, was very welcoming and helpful with everything we needed. We would have weekly meet ups to socialize and do fun activities together. The accommodation is full of other friendly students/travelers and I felt very safe, it’s comparable to a single dorm room.
Thank you for sharing your candid experience! We are glad that you have had an enriching experience overall and we look forward to seeing where your career takes you, Emily
Such a life experience!
February 21, 2023by: David Costas Lindblom - SpainProgram: Australia Hotel & Tourism Jobs
Me and my girlfriend wanted to work and travel after graduating highschool and decided to contact InternX for some advice. At first we wanted to work in New Zealand, but because we do not have a drivings license our coordinator adviced us with a wide amount of options. Out of those alternatives we chose an island near The Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia. We came all the way from Spain and Sweden and thanks to the organisation everything went very well and smooth. As soon as we arrived we quickly felt included in the big island family! We have now been working on a resort here for nearly four months and we are so greatful for all the experiences and the people we met. We have been able to explore the island on 4WD and camp with new friends from all over the world. We are very thankfull for this life experiendce and all the help from our coordinator (very good communication throughout the process and very understanding). We would recommend this 110%!

The time of my life in Madrid!
January 30, 2022by: Taylor Walsh - United StatesThis program was such a wonderful experience. I stayed in Madrid as one of their first digital nomads where I had the option to work from home while staying in Madrid. I worked with a Madrid marketing agency and sometimes would meet up with my boss to work together or grab coffee. This program was so flexible and fun I was able to travel all around Spain and Europe while adding a perfect internship to my resume. I made some of the best friends I’ve ever had and are still traveling/in contact with them today! The program directors are very involved and make sure you feel welcome in the destination of your choice. They also provide nights out with the other interns of that cohort while introducing new ones each month. I highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to be a world traveler without it impacting their career trajectories in a negative way. Thank you @theinterngroup!
Was so amazed how I could be so creative and efficient
November 05, 2020by: Patricia santiago - MexicoMy IGS mentor encouraged my on-the-ground participation on more complex tasks like events planning. We coordinated for a staff party and I was so amazed how I could be so creative and efficient! My fellow interns are so imaginative and resourceful too. Aside from their staff party, we were also involved in their staff seminars and meetings; and it made us feel a sense of belongingness. I feel like I am a part of the family. Thank you to the kind hotel staff, superiors, and of course, too IGS!
Did Marketing Duties For A Resort
October 29, 2020by: Rebekka Fleming - United StatesI needed another internship for my college resume and I am glad to have read about IGS at such a perfect time. This internship was one of a kind, I could say. For the job, we carried out Marketing duties for the resort. It was fascinating that they shared us effective marketing strategies and techniques. And for the networking, my co-interns are wonderful. They came from different parts of the world and we were happy to share our cultures while we explore our host country. Love the expi!
now I’m sure I am perfect and ready for this career
October 29, 2020by: Lysell Sanchez - Horton - ColombiaWhat I appreciate in my short stint as an intern was that we were assigned to different departments and duties. Personally, I particularly enjoyed handling front desk duties and check-ins. I was able to witness real-life situations wherein some customers are very difficult to attend to; but my superiors showed me how they professionally handled them. It was inspiring to see how calm and smiling they are all the time. IGS helps interns determine whether they have the right personality for tourism and hospitality – and now I’m sure I am perfect and ready for this career!
Best part for me was the opportunity to take on a paid position
October 14, 2020by: Gina Brooke - AustraliaMore than just practical experience, the best part for me was the opportunity to take on a paid position. I get to earn salaries and buy the things I could not spend on when I was still a student. It gives me a sense of freedom and independence. There is a high turnover in this field, so our superiors guaranteed us that hardworking students can earn employment if we continued working effectively and efficiently.
An experience I will never forget
October 14, 2020by: Stephanie Anne Curtis - United StatesI took my internship in Australia and it was crazy (in a good way)! It was super fun bonding with my co-interns and hotel staff. I am still friends with them until now. We talk via Viber and WeChat during weekends. I also met my boyfriend there, so it was an experience I will never forget!
