CIEE HS Summer Abroad: Marine Ecology in Cape Town

Observe the rarest of species as local marine scientists introduce you to Cape Town’s ocean life. Through field work out at sea and in coastal areas, see firsthand how human activity and biodiversity impact sustainability. Team up with other Global Navigators to imagine solutions for global marine issues. Despite the wintry weather, enjoy hiking, swimming, and snorkeling. Conduct research up close to African penguins and other colorful creatures in False Bay—a location critical to the health of the ocean. On dry land, adventures await! At the Two Oceans Aquarium, go behind the scenes where water pumps hum and divers put on their gear. In the Cape Floristic Region, discover the highest concentration of plant species on the planet. On safari, track wildlife and learn about carbon footprint reduction projects. Take part in South African traditions and meet local teens, too! Share authentic dishes, like koeksisters (similar to donuts) and boerewors (sausage rolls), and even forage for food on hikes in the wild!

Travel For Teens : South Africa Service and Safari

Meaningful service projects, thrilling adventures, and an abundance of wildlife come together on our South Africa program for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Our South Africa program mixes classic destinations like Cape Town and Kruger National Park with hidden gems off the beaten path to provide the ultimate experience! Our goal will be to get in touch with the heart of this amazing country by working with conservation experts and marine ecologists to learn more about South Africa’s natural beauty, wildlife, and conservation practices. During this program, we will discover everything South Africa has to offer while exploring the major cities, stunning countryside, and mind-blowing game reserves. For our service project, we work together to build a playground at a local school in one of the many villages in the area. The new playground will have a huge impact on the community and also demonstrate what a difference we can make! Your efforts will be rewarded with the meaningful friendships and connections you’ll form with the locals along the way and the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel when you have completed the project.

Beautiful opportunity!

This was a beautiful opportunity to explore a country i have never been in and really emerge and indulge in their culture. It was great to see how other countries work especially considering how this one is portrayed. There is much more to South Africa then what they teach. I would like everyone to get to experience this. I really like the human interactions most about this trip and learning the history of why people did what they did. I really like the tour with Tracy where she taught and showed us about her childhood and being the kids of fishermen. I also really liked the cooking classes were we got to interact with people and our peers.
