Gap Year Programs in South Korea

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy doing displaying “bad” table manners? Like sitting on the floor, slurping your hot, steamy beef noodle soup, or not finishing everything on your plate. In South Korea, break all the rules and learn some new “well-behaved” table manners. But that’s not all. With boundless activities and years of incredible history to uncover, your gap year in Korea will be more than belches of satisfaction and leftovers. We don’t mean to be kimchi-zy, but it’s time to bust out the chopsticks, gappers, and take a gap year in Korea!

Being part of the first ever Voyager semester in Fall 2023 was an experience I was unprepared for, and the best decision I could’ve ever made. Little did I know that by embarking on this endeavor, I would unlock a part of myself that I didn’t know existed until then. My semester with EF Gap Year taught me self-love, self discovery, and the importance of being uniquely myself. Never did I think it was possible to be able to afford this trip of a lifetime, but I was left with so much satisfaction ...

Ahhhh, the most exciting yet, tricky part. Where will you stay during your South Korea gap year? It’s a teeny tiny country, but still, SO. MANY. OPTIONS. GoAbroad is all about making your life easier, so we decided to do some research for you. Here’s to creating a longgggg list of where you want to go. Hear it from the pros perspective on the best places.. Here are a few of our favorite cities for a gap year in Korea.

Seoul. Not only is Seoul home to the capital, but it’s also famous for the Gangnam River. You know, that song by Psy who took over the world with his song Gangnam Style? Turns out it’s a river. Mind. Blown. Walk along notorious river and meet with locals to have a picnic. Or culture yourself up by visiting the Gyeongbokgung Palace that was built in the sixth century. It’s Korea’s biggest (and coolest) culture center museum in the country. What a time to be alive. Better hustle to Seoul for you gap year in Korea, where you can find all sorts of jobs to help keep your travel costs down.

Busan. Bus on down to Busan, where the water is cold and the mountains are high. This city is famous among gappers due to it’s hidden Buddhist temples. Hike and venture through the city mountain walls and learn about the religion that many Koreans worship. You’ll definitely feel the vibes of Busan on your gap year in Korea while visiting the Gamcheon Culture Village. This neighborhood is full of colorful buildings, local Korean art work, and of course, the best bulgogi in town. Do a Korean gap year here if you want to teach abroad or work at a ski resort.

Sokcho. Love the great outdoors and want to take your gap year in Korea to new heights? Then Sokcho is your oasis. Visit Seoraksan National Park, where the views are endless. With short or long trails, it’s perfect for any nature lover. Since you’re already outside, visit the beautiful temple at the very top of Ulsanbawi Rock. Hike and climb up the steep stairs and feel the presence of the Korean spirit around you as your make your way up to the peaceful temple. This is a great Korean gap year destination for anyone looking to spend more solo time looking inward.
