A Guide to Gap Year in Mozambique
Popular Locations
Mozambique is a large country with a population of almost 29 million people, the most populous city being the capital, Maputo. It is home to various indigenous groups, such as Makua and Shona, as well as people of European, East- and South-Asian, and South-African descent. Although not the most commonly visited destination, Mozambique has many beautiful locations for travelers to experience; Maputo, Vilankulo, and Mozambique Island are must-see spots.
Maputo. The most developed area of the country, the capital city is a popular location to undertake a gap year in Mozambique. The city happens to be located right on the coast, meaning visitors can experience the best of both worlds—a vibrant city full of traditional markets, restaurants and shops, and the tranquil, palm-fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean. Maputo also offers exciting nightlife, and is a safe city in which to go out and have fun.
Vilankulo. Vilankulo (also spelled Vilanculos) is another popular option for gap year programs in Mozambique. With good reason, it is also one of Mozambique’s better known tourist destinations thanks to its luxurious beach front hotels, opportunities to practice watersports, and to see extraordinary marine life by snorkeling or scuba diving (there is even an underwater national park!). Vilankulo is also much smaller than Maputo, meaning it’s easier to get around town and become familiar with local people and places.
Mozambique Island. Taking a gap year in Mozambique Island, also known as the Island of Mozambique, means experiencing the rich history of one of the country’s fastest-growing tourist destinations. Once a major trading port used by Arabic and European countries, particularly Portugal, the island is now full of fascinating architecture, from the neo-classical hospital building to chapels, temples and mosques. The island is now a UNESCO world heritage site, and of course, is lined by sandy beaches and turquoise ocean.
Popular Activities
As well as a diverse range of locations, there are also various activities to which travelers can dedicate their Mozambique gap years. Many projects aim to make a positive impact on the country (which is still developing), and there are many areas and industries in which gap year students can volunteer or work.
Animals. Gap year travelers who are passionate about animals, particularly wildlife and even more specifically, marine life, are sure to find a project that suits them in Mozambique. The ocean surrounding Mozambique is home to large populations of sharks, turtles, dolphins and manta rays, as well as coral reefs swimming with (no pun intended) colorful, tropical fish. Gap year projects include research and conservation of these aquatic animals. This kind of gap year project is ideal for students of biology, zoology, geography, or environmental studies wanting to gain important and exciting experience in their field, or for anyone who wishes to make a positive impact on marine life and be involved in the protection and conservation of endangered species.
Volunteering. Volunteering is one of the most popular projects for Mozambique gap years, and there are volunteering opportunities in different sectors, including childcare (such as working in schools and orphanages), healthcare and agriculture. Volunteering often involves investigation and research as well as developmental activities, so gap year students and travelers are sure to pick up valuable experience whilst making a positive difference to the local community. Although Mozambique is making economic advances, it remains one of the poorest countries in the world, with plenty of opportunities for volunteer workers to help raise the standard of living through healthcare and education.
Everything else you need to know about gap years in Mozambique
Costs. Most gap year programs in Mozambique are often quite expensive. Volunteering programs can range from anywhere between 100-750 USD per week (programs lasting for 3+ weeks), but the price does include accommodation, food, and oftentimes airport pick-up. However, the price does not include the cost of travel, visas, and vaccinations that may be necessary. Although the cost of the programs can be high, the cost of living in Mozambique is relatively low, and with most of the necessities included, gappers are unlikely to end up paying out of pocket. What’s more, the money invested in gap year programs in Mozambique goes towards good causes; FundMyTravel is a great way to campaign to raise some funds.
Accommodations. Gap year programs in Mozambique tend to provide accommodation in shared flats or dormitories. They might not be the most luxurious living arrangements, but they will include basic necessities and often include meals and Internet connection.
Visas. Backpackers and tourists who intend to stay in Mozambique for less than 30 days will receive a visa on entry to the country, provided they have a return ticket. However, gap year travelers who intend to stay for longer than 30 days and/or will be employed or volunteering will need to apply for a visa through their program. Visas can take a while to process, so it’s best to get the application underway as soon as possible. For more information, check our embassy directory.
Safety. Mozambique is generally a safe country for visitors. However, it is always wise to exercise caution when out and about, as crimes such as theft still take place and travelers may be targeted, although violence is uncommon. It is always sensible to stay with friends when enjoying the nightlife, and not to leave possessions unattended. In terms of staying healthy during your gap year in Mozambique, make sure to check with your doctor if you need any vaccinations. It is also recommended to drink only bottled water, and to carry hygiene supplies.
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
Gap years are an amazing way to take a break from studying or to make the most of a gap in employment. They are also great for gaining work and life experience, which is not only beneficial for furthering your career but for broadening your horizons, and maybe even introducing you to paths you had never thought of before. An ideal time to take a gap year is before starting college or university—the extra year of life experience prepares you to study a degree in a way that nothing else can.
During your gap year in Mozambique, be sure to try out the local food, and try and develop a taste for spice! Seafood is abundant and can always be found fresh and cheap—the local shellfish, such as shrimp and lobster, is considered to be some of the best in the world. These fish are often cooked peri-peri style with red chilli, garlic, and lemon, creating a fusion of African and Portuguese cooking.
If you are craving an adventure that is off the beaten track, a gap year in Mozambique could be the unusual escape you are looking for.
