The VACorps Gap Year Program is a transformative experience that will prepare you for the world that awaits after you finish high school. Our program will help you identify your personal goals, values, and passions and incorporate them into your career and life plan. You will gain real-world work experience, make new friends from all over the globe, and have the time of your life as you explore the most beautiful city in the world. As a participant of our program, you will join a community that feels like a family. When you arrive in South Africa, we make it incredibly easy for you to adjust to life in Cape Town and call this city your home. From your very first day in the country, we will guide you through a comprehensive orientation that ensures you will take full advantage of every moment in South Africa. You'll be immediately networked with other participants, forming a peer group to relate to as you quickly adapt to life in a new city that you'll soon call home. Gap year students live together in the Gap Year House, which is another highlight of the VACorps Gap Year Program experience.

Intern in Cape Town, where ocean views, rich history, and endless adventure shape your gap year. Cape Town is a city like no other, framed by Table Mountain, bordered by two oceans, and alive with the rhythm of the Rainbow Nation. During this 12-week program, you’ll live and intern in South Africa, gaining real-world experience and cultural insight alongside a cohort of peers destined to become fast friends. Intern 15–20 hours per week at a placement matched to your interests, whether with an NGO tackling social change, an established ecotourism company, or a creative business in Cape Town’s growing tech and startup scene. An optional 15-hour course helps you reflect on your experience and build career-ready skills, and optional U.S. college credit is available through online courses through ASU Online. Two guided excursions have you exploring the dark history of Robben Island, the maximum-security prison where Nelson Mandela was held, and Elephant’s Eye, a cave lookout with sweeping views. GoEco offers more than 60 wildlife and animal conservation volunteer opportunities and internships worldwide! Our programs focus on the welfare and conservation of various species, both wildlife and domestic animals. We offer volunteer opportunities and internships at wildlife rescue centers, wildlife sanctuaries, wildlife reserves and animal shelters. Start your adventure in South America with intensive Spanish lessons, then step up the adventure with an epic trek across the Andes to Machu Picchu on the remote Salkantay route—over icy mountain passes and through mysterious cloud forests to the remains of a fallen civilization. One day, you will be collecting data on big cats in one of the largest reserves in South Africa, and then learning bush skills from a master tracker and tracking a herd of elephants the next. You will be part of the conservation community, listening to stories of the land and learning from qualified locals. Completely immersed, you will see what it’s like to live and breathe meaningful African conservation. It’s not always easy to nurse injured animals back to health, but the reintroduction, monitoring, and seeing them thrive afterward is a memory that will last a lifetime. This is a hands-on experience where your efforts are rewarded—many of these wildlife projects wouldn’t exist without volunteers like you. This program is also tailored to how much time you have, your skills, and what you would like to achieve.

Our host families volunteer to open their homes to you and welcome you in as a member of their families. This means they truly want to share their language and culture with you while learning about your language and culture. Instead of paying for language courses, our host families believe that hosting a native English speaker is a better way to learn the language and make friendships that last forever. In exchange for room and board, you are required to tutor your hosts in English for 15 hours per week. It’s your job to assess the level of each family member upon arrival and work closely with them to meet their individual needs. We will offer tutoring materials to help you prepare for the lessons before departing. But remember, you don’t need to stay indoors doing grammar exercises out of a textbook. Everyday conversation is oftentimes the best way to become fluent. We encourage you to learn the local language as well!

We offer a unique Voluntourism & Cultural Exploration Program in Kisumu County, Western Kenya. This opportunity is designed for individuals who want to balance meaningful volunteer work with exploring local culture, nature, and tourist attractions. Participants spend part of their time supporting community initiatives such as women’s empowerment programs, gardening projects, youth activities, or community outreach. The volunteer activities are flexible and designed to allow participants to contribute while still having time to explore the region. The program also provides guided opportunities to discover some of the most beautiful and culturally important places in Western Kenya. We assist volunteers in planning trips and connecting with trusted local guides at discounted community rates. This is a journey of personal development and self-discovery as well as immersion in a new culture and environment. The full program is 10 weeks long and includes 3 modules (per year): Module 1.
