A Guide to Gap Year in Mozambique
Popular Locations
Mozambique is a large country with a population of almost 29 million people, the most populous city being the capital, Maputo. It is home to various indigenous groups, such as Makua and Shona, as well as people of European, East- and South-Asian, and South-African descent. Although not the most commonly visited destination, Mozambique has many beautiful locations for travelers to experience; Maputo, Vilankulo, and Mozambique Island are must-see spots.
Maputo. The most developed area of the country, the capital city is a popular location to undertake a gap year in Mozambique. The city happens to be located right on the coast, meaning visitors can experience the best of both worlds—a vibrant city full of traditional markets, restaurants and shops, and the tranquil, palm-fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean. Maputo also offers exciting nightlife, and is a safe city in which to go out and have fun.
Vilankulo. Vilankulo (also spelled Vilanculos) is another popular option for gap year programs in Mozambique. With good reason, it is also one of Mozambique’s better known tourist destinations thanks to its luxurious beach front hotels, opportunities to practice watersports, and to see extraordinary marine life by snorkeling or scuba diving (there is even an underwater national park!). Vilankulo is also much smaller than Maputo, meaning it’s easier to get around town and become familiar with local people and places.
Mozambique Island. Taking a gap year in Mozambique Island, also known as the Island of Mozambique, means experiencing the rich history of one of the country’s fastest-growing tourist destinations. Once a major trading port used by Arabic and European countries, particularly Portugal, the island is now full of fascinating architecture, from the neo-classical hospital building to chapels, temples and mosques. The island is now a UNESCO world heritage site, and of course, is lined by sandy beaches and turquoise ocean.
