A Guide to Adventure Travel in Multiple Countries
Locations
Since you’re planning to visit multiple countries, the first decision you must make when picking your travel locations is what continent you want to explore! Any region of the world is attractive, but you need to focus on one landmass, then narrow your focus to specific countries of interest.
Book an adventure to Southeast Asia and explore Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam for a perfect combination of nature, history, beauty, nightlife, tranquil beaches, and rainforests. Rescue elephants in Thailand. Go diving in Cambodia. Visit sacred temples in Vietnam. Now this would be a journey as far away from your desk at the office as you can possibly get.
Interested in arranging your own safari trip? Consider multi country vacation packages in Africa, where you could visit countries such as Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Practice your ranger skills in the bush and learn about flora and other African fauna. Explore the diverse ecosystems of Botswana. Practice elephant conservation in Namibia. And where else can you see “The Big Five” game animals all in one place than in South Africa? The African lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros, oh my! Then canoe down the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe.
Multi-country European tours and explore the British Isles of England, Ireland, and Scotland, where travel adventure opportunities are growing in Eastern Europe. During your time in England, forget the historic sites, and take a hike north along the coast. As you make your way north to the historic Scottish Highlands, keep an eye out for the Loch Ness monster! Just imagine exploring the mountain ranges and climbing the highest peak, Ben Nevis. Prepare for an altogether different experience as you float over to Ireland where you will explore the Cliffs of Moher, Dublin, and Galway.
Oceania is comprised of 14 countries and thousands of islands. Holy kangaroo! That is a lot of opportunity for multi country vacation packages! Maybe start big and explore the Australian outback. Take a walk on the wild side and go “Lord of the Rings” style, hiking “Mount Doom” (Mount Ruapehu) in New Zealand, and pray that it doesn’t erupt! If you can’t find enough to keep you occupied in those two locations, no sweat because there are 10,000 islands in Oceania to explore!
Multi-Country Adventures
The world is a mighty big place, and you have equally big expectations when it comes to choosing the right program from adventure tourism companies. No matter what your interests, budget, and intended length of stay, you’ll find an opportunity waiting for you. Most programs will be a two-for-one package. Combining volunteer work, language programs, or more general study with organized adventure travel.
Volunteer & Adventure. Do you want to spend your time tracking wildlife, assisting park rangers, rescuing sea turtles, or observing “The Big Five”? Book a program in multiple locations abroad where you can do all of the above and more in a wildlife and conservation program. If you enjoy adventure, but a more refined type, consider a performing arts program. You could travel the world and inspire people from different countries with your musical talents while at the same time learning about their unique culture. Sign up for multi-country tours where you’ll discover what makes each region unique, gaining a better understanding of its politics, history, culture, geography, environmental issues, religions, and economics.
Eco-Adventures for Students. Still in school and looking for an adventure of a lifetime while you study? Consider a semester at sea. Depart from Australia and cruise to Thailand, while visiting multiple countries in between. Imagine surfing, snorkeling, diving, navigating currents, combined with onshore adventures at each stop. This type of program will allow you to incorporate studying and cultural exchange with adventure for all ages, from multi-country European tours to flits about Latin America and more.
Gap Year. If you want to go BIG, take an entire year off and visit multiple countries by booking a gap year program. What other time in your life will you have the time to go diving in nine different countries on three continents? Learn about the people, culture, religion, history, and issues of multiple regions of the world the program will take you through.
All of these multi-country adventure travel programs will help you gain skills, confidence, appreciation for diversity in cultures, leadership and group skills, and an understanding of international issues. If you have the time, the program you desire is waiting for you.
Costs & Affordability
Of course, since you are a travel and adventure junkie, you aspire to see the entire world. However, some locations are more expensive than others, so it is important to do your research ahead of time to ensure your eyes aren’t bigger than your pocketbook.
Program costs usually cover the major expenses, but what about the standard items you will need on your adventure that aren’t included? To give you an idea of costs, you can expect to pay about $1.00 for a coke in Australia, for example, while it costs around $0.50 in South Africa. In other words, do some in-depth research so there aren’t too many surprises.
For more details on what is or isn’t included in your program, you’ll need to coordinate directly with the specific program provider. Generally, most program fees include transportation in and between countries will be as well as accommodations and most meals. Additional costs will likely include flights to and from your initial destination, required visas and passport, as well as extra spending money for all of those shiny souvenirs or optional excursions you might stumble upon.
So, you might not be a millionaire, unfortunately, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a fabulous adventure. Travel smart and seek adventure tourism companies that caters to travelers on a budget. They know the ins and outs of the region and all its adventures and have already done the research for you. Some companies also offer fewer inclusions to cut costs or offer simpler accommodations. What better way to get back to nature than tent camping?
Accommodation & Visas
Where you hang your hat for the night will depend on what leg of your journey you’re on, which could change daily. While visiting cities or historical sites, expect to stay in a hotels or hostels. If you are roughing it in the backcountry bush, you might find yourself in a tent swatting away mosquitos. Some programs that visit multiple locations will incorporate a good mix of both outdoor and urban adventures. You might even find yourself sleeping on a boat for a month or two if you have sea legs and love to check out countries byway of their ports.
An important step to consider when planning your trip is determining which countries will require a visa for entry. Since you are planning to visit multiple countries on your adventure abroad, you will likely be able to get by on a 90-day tourist visa, but this isn’t always the case. Most programs with multi-country tours will supply you with the necessary information to obtain visas for each country ahead of time. Don’t hesitate to double check on your own though. Visit GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory to find your closest embassy and get more information about visa requirements.
Benefits & Challenges
Traveling abroad does require a lot more planning than domestic travel. But as they say, nothing worth having comes easy. You're seeing the world and having some of the best adventure vacations! You're getting a crash course in being travel savvy. You're exposing yourself to new languages, new cultures, new foods, and new people on the daily. You are out of your comfort zone, you are away from your cubicle at work, and you’re finding yourself on the other side of the planet.
Traveling can be tiring, and constantly being on the move from one adrenaline-pumping activity to the next will only compound that. Make sure you're not burning the candle at both ends. Get your rest, drink your water, and wake up every day refreshed and ready for the next escapade. You also might not get a fully immersive experience, so if you're really wanting to get to know a community or learn a language, this might not be the route you go.
So, it’s a done deal. Now it’s time to pack, board that plane, and get ready to meet people from all around the world who have the same thirst for adventure, nature, travel, and culture as you do. After all, the best adventure vacations start and end with friends.

This was an amazing experience in which I learnt a lot about the world around me and myself. The trip has the perfect balance of Independence and being led as well as a balance of adventure and chill time, all amazing to bond with team mates. The trip has a nice mix of urban areas and countery side and beautiful views. Would definitely recommend. Some of the best weeks of my life
May 21, 2025by: Max Wenham - EnglandProgram: South America Explorer with Gapforce
This was my first travel experience and it was great. Starting in Cusco was a great place to meet everyone and the city is amazing. The Salkantay trek was some of the best days of my life with Machu Picchu capping it off. So the whole trip with Quilatoa, the activities in Baños, the wildlife volunteering and the otovalo market it’s overall a great trip. I would also say though if you are going bring a bit of soap unless you’re ok with 3in1 :) and pack a bit of variety in your clothing as you will be trekking but there are opportunities to go out at night with the others on the trip.

The Australia and New Zealand semester was the most amazing trip I’ve ever been on! From the beautiful beaches of AUS to the stunning southern alps of New Zealand, every single activity and view on this trip was amazing. There is nowhere I would rather have spent the last 70 days, and no group I would rather have been with!
The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program
November 19, 2024by: Peter GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
Pacific Discovery was recommended to us by parents of a PD alumni (Aus/NZ) and it made a huge difference to us in our review of alternative programs. The points highlighted by the parents that appealed to us centered around personal growth, world/cultural/travel experience, great planning, and excellent guides; our student's experience was terrific in all these aspects, and we so appreciate the guidance he received during the program to help contextualize all of the amazing and mundane experiences he had on the progam. The opportunities and emphasis on the 'discovery' aspect of the program particularly for his individual development, was, for us, the main reason for selecting PD, and we couldn't be more pleased with how that purpose was achieved.
The spontaneous discoveries the group was making
November 12, 2024by: Diana GrumanProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
We loved the communication between Pacific Discovery and parents. The portal offered detailed information and forms prior to the trip. During the trip, the weekly summaries gave us a window into the activities and the spontaneous discoveries the group was making in their towns, service sites, and local hosts.
Live and travel more sustainably

I had an amazing time with amazing people on the Australia New Zealand Gap semester! It was an incredible program that showed us how to live and travel more sustainably, make the most of our time with every experience, and learn from others we meet along the way! I definitely recommend this program!!
I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone.
November 03, 2024by: Gemma ColeProgram: Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands Gap Semester
The South America Gap Semester pushed me out of my comfort zone both mentally, physically, and socially. Pushing my body beyond what I thought it could do, opening up to - and being vulnerable with- a new group of people, and communicating in a different language in a place so vastly different than I’m used to, were all challenging and rewarding experiences. I feel like I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot about myself from stepping out of my comfort zone and opening myself up to new opportunities and possibilities.
A summer I will never forget!!!
October 20, 2024by: Annalise Mehok - United StatesProgram: Caribbean Scuba and Sailing Voyage
Prior to going on my Broadreach trip I was a little nervous going into it, not knowing what I was getting myself into and meeting bunch of “strangers.” Little did I know all the instructors and everyone else were so welcoming and kind spirited, I immediately felt a sense of relief and knew I was gonna have the best time. Learning to scuba dive was my favorite part, I always felt so safe and it was just such an exciting and fun thing to do. Also, living on a boat and learning to sail showed me a new side of myself and the world. It taught me to be so great full for the normal Luxuries like unlimited water and internet but also taught me that you don’t need fancy things to live your best life. Exploring all the islands was so cool, I was immersed so many new cultures I had never experienced, and I loved hiking and exploring. The bond I formed with the people around me, is a bond I will never forget, and by the end of the trip I didn’t wanna leave and was ready to come back as soon as I could.

So much fun!
October 11, 2024by: Isa Caskey - United StatesProgram: Caribbean Scuba and Sailing Voyage
This trip was really fun, but also a bit stressful. For starters, the living situation was rough. It was too hot to sleep in the cabins, so we had to sleep outside, but it rained every night, and it was difficult for all of us to fit under the covered area. My boat had seven people on it, but some had 12, which must have been really cramped! I loved learning to dive and meeting new people, but I felt a little bit unsupported sometimes. For instance, I got this rash (probably due to the fact that you're only allowed 10 seconds of fresh water to shower with), and I wasn't sure who to go to. I guess I could have gone to my counselors, but I would have rather spoken to someone from the support boat. It was kind of frustrating because, even though they were supposed to be there to support us, we never really had a chance to talk to them. I kind of just wanted to call my mom and ask her what to do. I know that all of our counselors and staff were adults and professionals, but I would have felt more comfortable talking to my mom and having her contact support boat for me. We weren't allowed to wash out hands, we could only use hand sanitizer, and we almost ran out before the trip was over. We washed our dishes in the ocean (although we rinsed them off at the end), and if someone used the bathroom while we were doing dishes, we had to wait for a while. Maybe I'm just not cut out for boat life, but I did have a pretty good time.
The trip of my life
October 11, 2024by: Matvey Davydov - PortugalProgram: Caribbean Scuba and Sailing Voyage
This voyage was insane! I had so much fun and new friends that I think I got more memories there than in all of my previous camps. If you will ever go on that trip, get some candy to share with your teammates and counselors (if you do that they might even take you on the unplanned night dive :). I had a lot of fun!!!
The trip of a lifetime!
June 06, 2024by: Daisy Hart - WalesGoing into this trip I was so nervous and had little idea of what to expect, but it truly was the best two months of my life! I’ve come away with the most wonderful memories, experiences and friends for life, I’d go back and do it all again tomorrow. The day trips, volunteering, and cultural experiences were really second to none and fulfilled everything anyone would hope to do when travelling to South East Asia- it’s a really great way to see that part of the world without the added stress of organising and planning everything yourself. Our guide, Stefan, was great with leading us around for the eight weeks, making us feel safe but still independent to do our own thing, no activities were ever forced or expected of us. Overall this trip has the perfect balance of experiences, culture, adventure, relaxing and fun. I’d recommend it to anyone and can’t thank Stefan and Gapforce enough!

Something for everyone, varied experiences:)
June 02, 2024by: Hal Tucker - United KingdomI enjoyed it, we did a lot over the two months, the people we interact with and work with in the counties; elephant sanctuary and volunteer building are great. It’s a varied trip with good amounts of independence, doing different things. Stephan was good and the group also. Being 1 of 2 guys in a group of girls made it difficult to connect at time, but I did eventually. Also the switching up of rooms and living arrangements helps, cos it changes the dynamics. Overall good, hot, amazing, nice people, food :), great variety within the trip. Would definitely recommend.
Not once did I ever regret signing up
May 31, 2024by: Oscar Kilner - United KingdomIt was amazing, the activities were amazing, the volunteering of was amazing, the leader (Stefan Ivanovic) was amazing. It was so much fun. I loved every moment. I would absolutely recommend it, and I would definitely do it again if I had the time and money.
My greatest adventure yet!
May 12, 2024by: Emma Gardner - United StatesBeing a student on Sea|Mester was the most incredible experience of my life. I did the South Africa to Antigua voyage on Vela, and it exceeded any and all expectations I could have possibly had. I got to visit places that I never thought I would get to go. I met people that started out as strangers, but quickly became family to me. Prior to Sea|Mester, I had very little sailing experience and no diving experience and I think that that is a common turn off for people that come across this program, but you have no need to be worried if you're in that boat (haha). The staff does an exceptional job teaching you the ropes, making you feel safe, and making you feel like the boat is your home. If you're a hands on learning that thrives on getting outside of your comfort zone, adventure, and travel then this program is for you. I can not effusive enough how much Sea|Mester and my crew changed my life. If you're presented with the privilege to be a student on Sea|Mester... do it. If Sea|Mester taught me anything, it's to say yes even when you're scared. The greatest adventure of your life could be waiting for you.

Amazing Life Changing Experience
April 16, 2024by: Alexander Donkersloot - United Statesloved it. The challenges that brought people together and helped me grow as a person, the sheer beauty and thrill of sailing across an ocean, all the stops along the way, and the list goes on and on. The staff were super super super incredible and I wish that everyone had the opportunity to do something this awesome and fun. Thanks for the best summer ever. I did actionquest two years before and I knew the GXG was an awesome group. I would recommend taking some stuff off the packing list because I did overpack. That might’ve just been me though. Loved the food and even though they warned us we would get tired of pasta, I never did. All the staff was awesome. They always cared selflessly and made the trip so much fun. They always made sure to put us before themselves and even though I would’ve been tired of dealing with us by the end, they were always energetic, smiling, and positive. I was able to grow as a person and socialize better. This trip was awesome.

Best 3 months ever
December 14, 2023by: Matthew Pidden - EnglandI did the trip from Palau to Thailand in 21 and it was so much fun. I learnt so much, made so many great friends and got to see and experience some of the coolest stuff I’ve seen to date. The staff are all very cool, approachable and great teachers. I got 12 credits and it didn’t even feel like a semester because it was so fun. If you like adventure, travel and the ocean I couldn’t recommend this program more.
