Science Study Abroad Programs in Spain

Spend a semester or academic year in the modern and cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, Spain, with AIFS Abroad! You’ll earn up to 15 credits per semester studying at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). Courses are taught in English or Spanish, with no previous Spanish language study required. There are many ways to make an impact within Barcelona’s local community. Once you’re abroad, volunteer opportunities will be available through local NGOs to provide services to people in need within the local community. Live in a Spanish homestay or, for an additional fee, in an apartment or student residence. Homestay students receive breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday from the family. Apartment and residence students have access to a shared kitchen. Cultural and social activities include guided tours of Barcelona and its famous landmarks and attractions, cooking classes, Flamenco performances, and tapas evenings with Spanish students. 3-day excursions to the Pyrenees (fall only) and Tarragona and Southern Catalonia (spring only) are included in the program fee, as well as day trips to Gerona and Besalú, Figueras and the Salvador Dalí Museum, and Montserrat and Sitges.

This program is perfect for students with intermediate-level or higher Spanish skills who seek an authentic and immersive experience. Away from the crowds of American students who opt for more popular destinations, like Barcelona or Madrid, with us, you will find yourself fully immersed in the Spanish language and culture of La Coruña, Spain. At the beginning of the semester, you can optionally take an intensive Spanish language course to help prepare you for the semester abroad. You can take classes in your field of interest at an accredited public Spanish university. Most classes are taught in Spanish alongside Spanish students. While some courses are offered in English, we highly recommend taking on the challenge of studying in Spanish. If you need additional Spanish practice before the semester starts, you may combine our Summer Spanish Immersion program with the semester or year abroad program. You will be issued an official transcript, and we can assist you with obtaining transfer credit at your home institution. Sunny Madrid! Spain's most populous and capital city is arguably also the most well-known. It has a population of 6.7 million and is the second-largest city in the European Union. It is the country's political, economic, and cultural epicenter, located in the central region, right off the River Manzanares. Madrid is a European city with the highest number of trees and green surfaces per inhabitant and the second-highest number of aligned trees in the world, with 248,000 units, only exceeded by Tokyo. Its citizens have access to a green area within a 15-minute walk. Since 1997, green areas have increased by 16%. Presently, 8.2% of Madrid's grounds are green areas, meaning there are 16 m2 (172 sq ft) of green area per inhabitant, far exceeding the 10 m2 (108 sq ft) per inhabitant recommended by the World Health Organization.
