Human Rights Advocacy Study Abroad Programs in Italy

Spend a semester or academic year in the classic city of Rome with AIFS Abroad. Earn up to 17 credits studying at AIFS Abroad Global Education Center and receive credits from Fairfield University. No previous Italian language study is required. All programs begin with a 1-week language and cultural orientation. Choose between 4 academic programs: • Multi-Discipline • Intensive Italian Language Program • Study + Internship Program • Music Program (for music majors, in conjunction with Saint Louis College of Music) • Independent Study Courses Volunteer opportunities are also available. Students can choose from the Service Learning and Volunteering Program and the Service Learning and Active Citizenship course. Participants are immersed in the Italian language and culture during a semester, academic year, or summer program. Courses include Anthropology, Art History, Cinema, Medieval History, Sociolinguistics, History of Italian Cooking, Business, and Creative Arts. Students live with local host families while making a difference in the local community through service-learning opportunities. They participate in a series of activities and excursions during the semester or summer term. Some of these include cooking classes, grape harvest, hikes in the countryside, museum visits, day trips to Florence, and overnight excursions to the Alps, Tuscan coast, or other destinations of interest.

Study human rights and law in Siracusa, Sicily, and experience life on the Mediterranean Sea while learning from global experts. This program is offered for sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a 2.5 or higher GPA. Housing is apartment-style, and the program is offered in the fall and spring semesters (ongoing). Full-day excursions around the island of Sicily will be included in the program fee. Excursions could include places like the Baroque cities of Noto and Modica, the ancient Greek art and architecture site of the Valley of the Temples, the Necropolis of Pantalica, which dates from the 13th to 7th centuries BC, etc. Additionally, classes will have excursions around Siracusa and Catania, tied to course content.
