Volunteer and Teach with IVHQ in Zambia

Teaching volunteers in Zambia are given the opportunity to work with teachers and local volunteers in community schools. These schools are community run and offer reduced fees or free admission to students in need, many of whom are orphaned or living with elderly family members. As these schools depend heavily on the involvement of local volunteers, the ratio of students to teachers can be as high as 60 students to 1 teacher. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to work in government schools, orphanages, community centers, or special needs facilities. The project is heavily focused on teaching English, however there are also opportunities to teach a range of other subjects, such as math and science, and assist with extracurricular activities, including sports, music, dance, art, gardening and nutrition.

Zambia - Livingstone Community Teaching

Located in Livingstone, Zambia, GoEco allows volunteers to work near Victoria Falls. By volunteering at GoEcos Community Teaching, participants can work at one of five schools in and the around the area of Livingstone. By volunteering with at risk and orphaned youth, GoEco volunteers can make a real difference in the lives of many. Another great aspect of the Community teaching project is that volunteers can separate students of theirs who are doing poorly and work with them separately in a slower, more one-on-one environment.

Girl and Women Empowerment Volunteering in Zambia

Join our Girl and Women Empowerment Volunteering project, and assist those who have had no access to education but wish to make better future for themselves and their families. Volunteer with an international team in Zambia. These women want to be able to read and to communicate in English with the visitors of Livingstone. They also hope to gain skills to develop a business to increase family income or to support their children’s studies. As a volunteer, you will encourage girls to participate in sports. You will also discuss matters like life paths, emotional and social issues, and fundamental topics like sexual and reproductive health, staying safe and rights of girls and women. We have a curriculum in place, and it is evolving in line with the needs of local women and girls. The project is already doing well with developing sewing skills, the establishment of an after-school touch rugby club, and improvement of English levels. We hope that once sessions for women and girls are more established, we can include boys and men. There are many areas within the community where volunteer support is required, including adult literacy and manual work like painting & refurbishing.

Teaching in Schools in Zambia

This wonderful project was created to improve the educational opportunities for young children in Mwandi. It focuses on teaching English, an essential language in the area and crucial for securing future employment. Introducing English at a formative age greatly increases children's chances of gaining a high level of fluency in later years, allowing them to pursue further education opportunities and seek alternative employment where English is an advantage. Volunteers can also share their passion for sports, arts, crafts, music, and games. Participants work alongside local teachers in a small community school, which opened in January 2019 and expanded to cater to students from preschool to grade 3. The school relies on fundraising and donations to remain operational. Local teachers and children greatly appreciate the assistance of international volunteers!

Amazing experience in Zambia

August 15, 2025by: Salimata Able - EnglandProgram: Medical Volunteering with IVHQ in Zambia

Volunteering in Zambia was an adventure from start to finish — and one I’d happily sign up for all over again! From the moment I arrived, everything was fairly well organised and the team made me feel instantly welcome. The medical placement itself was fantastic: I got to roll up my sleeves, help out wherever I could, and even sit in on counselling sessions. Observing doctors and technicians in action was eye-opening, and I loved the chance to share ideas and swap knowledge — especially since I went in with an open mind and zero expectations of “matching” EU or other so-called developed country healthcare standards. I travelled solo, but it didn’t take long before I was surrounded by great company. I met some truly lovely people, including one of the pragram managers, who even joined our group for a safari (because in Zambia, wildlife comes as part of the volunteer perks). When I wasn’t in placement, I made the most of my free time — exploring the country, diving into local activities, and enjoying plenty of fun with my fellow volunteers. This was my third time volunteering with IVHQ, and yet again, it didn’t disappoint. Zambia, you’ve been wonderful — until next time!one
