International Medical Aid (IMA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides travel abroad internships for nutrition and dietetics students. Undergrad and graduate-level students, as well as licensed practitioners, are invited to go to countries in East Africa, South America, and the Caribbean to provide medical care to underserved populations. Interns shadow medical professionals who treat patients requiring medical attention. Underserved communities in remote locations generally lack funds and the basic tools to maintain healthy citizens. IMA strives to change that. In addition to shadowing and volunteering, interns are encouraged to take in the beauty and culture of the country. Join our volunteer program in Kisumu, Kenya, where you'll have the opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of women affected by HIV through a transformative tailoring initiative. Volunteers will support women in learning vital skills, from sewing to entrepreneurship, while also helping improve their business and financial literacy. You'll engage in hands-on activities, such as assisting with sewing, taking photos of products, and contributing creative ideas to enhance designs. Volunteers can also train women on financial management, online marketing, and pricing strategies, empowering them to create sustainable businesses. We invite medical students and practitioners across all medical fields to fill the ever-growing gaps in Level 5 hospitals, health centers, rural clinics, and dispensaries in Kenya. Some of these facilities have the equipment but lack human resources, affecting the services provided to most of the population. Interns and volunteers will be involved in various activities based on their backgrounds and training. These could include assisting with nursing, patient check-ups, registration, treatments, vaccinations, patient transport, maternity, pediatric care, dentistry, optical care, physiotherapy, and surgeries, among other things. Participants can choose to work at Nakuru Level 5 General Hospital, Mother Kevin Mission Hospital, Mama Lucy Hospital, or Muserich Health Center. The work schedule is from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, and interns/volunteers can stay anywhere from two weeks to three months. Weekends are free, and interns/volunteers can also take part in professional knowledge sharing.

Non-governmental and government organizations run numerous maternity clinics, private and children’s hospitals, health facilities, alternative medicine clinics, and HIV/AIDS wards in several small rural villages and towns. As a volunteer in this Medical and Healthcare program, you will support local health providers in Kenya by taking on different responsibilities. Your work varies from consultation to treatment, based largely on your level of medical skills, knowledge, and experience. You will also cooperate with local healthcare personnel within a community.
