A Guide to TEFL Courses in New Zealand
Locations
The entire country of New Zealand is just as gorgeous as the panoramic views you see when you take your eyes off Legolas to the backdrops of Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit (where these movies were filmed!). No matter if you choose to earn your TEFL certificate in New Zealand on the North or the South Island, beautiful beaches and great hiking trails will not be out of reach.
“The City of Sails” - Auckland offers all of the benefits of big city living with nearby access to beaches and nature-galore. It is nestled between two harbors on the North Island land and boasts mild weather all year round. While it has the largest population in New Zealand, it maintains a small-town feel, thanks to charming neighborhoods tucked away in its corners. Whether you are into the spirited nightlife, small cafes, and live-music, or lovely little markets, all of the above can be found in Auckland.
“Windy Welly” - Wellington has a population of 200,000 and has affectionately been called "the coolest little capital." This active city is surrounded by 225 miles of walking paths and bike trails, so despite the smaller size, you’ll never be far from a nice stroll. Wellington is a culinary hotspot too, with over 750 restaurants and cafes. The most popular neighborhood among TEFL students is Mount Victoria, just a 10 minute walk from the city center.
“The Garden City” - Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island with a population of 330,000 people. The vibe in this city is a little more laidback, and they are proud of it. There is no better place to relax than in the beautiful Victorian England-style parks and gardens that you will find throughout the city. While Christchurch is known for a more relaxed vibe, it also plays host to many lively festivals throughout the year (like the “Festival of Romance” and the “World Buskers Festival”), so you can always find inspiration for your next ESL lesson!
“The Adventure Capital of the World” - Queenstown is surrounded by mountains and settled next to a lake, making it a haven for anyone that loves adventure sports. From skiing to paragliding, you can find it all in Queenstown. For the more adventurous souls, the city is also home to the 500 foot Nevis bungy jump, which is the highest in the world! The town itself is small and walkable, but with tourists from all over the world flooding in year round, you will definitely meet many interesting people (both inside and outside your school grounds) while taking TEFL courses in Queenstown.
