A Guide to TEFL Courses in Hungary
Locations
With a foot in both Eastern and Western Europe, Hungary has maintained its old-world style in a way that’s easily accessible. As tourism is picking up, so is the demand for English teachers, creating the ideal environment to earn your TEFL certificate and actually be able to find English teaching jobs in Hungary when you’re through.
Divided by the Danube River into two cities: Buda and Pest, Budapest as a whole blends both the medieval and modern. Architecture and history-lovers will be come alive in historic Buda. Castle Hill is a blast from the distant past with medieval houses, churches, and monuments still intact (pretty cool considering that the city has been twice rebuilt!). Once you’ve had your history lesson, simply walk across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge to the more modern Pest. There, take a ride on the oldest subway line in mainland Europe to the Széchenyi Spa Baths at the northern end of City Park. This year-round thermal bath is one of the largest in Budapest and is a cultural hub where both men and women catch up on gossip. You might also witness games of chess being played on floating chessboards.
Budapest may be the heart of the action and where the majority of TEFL programs in Hungary are based, but take a look beyond the capital to some of Hungary’s smaller cities or villages too, where you can more easily connect with locals and become a real part of the community.
Hungary’s second-largest city, Debrecen sits just west of the Hortobágy National Park and is optimal for nature lovers. Being Hungary and all, you’ll also find hot thermal baths, beautifully maintained architecture, and festivals and community gatherings for all to enjoy. The Flower Carnival in mid-August is one such example as millions of blooms grace the city.
If city life is not your thing, you can also find TEFL programs and teaching jobs in the rural areas of Hungary. Studying and teaching in a village or rural setting allows you to spend your time befriending the locals and living as the magyar people do (and less time speaking English).
