Often referred to as the "Land of the Midnight Sun," Norway is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and its commitment to environmental sustainability and green living. The country leads the way in promoting sustainable practices and preserving its pristine natural environment—all while building social policies that place strong emphasis on education and innovation. Yet, alongside these green initiatives and progressive systems lies a striking contradiction: spearheading the green revolution while relying heavily on income from the oil industry. This program examines the complexities of social systems in the wake of these successes and contradictions.

Oslo, Norway’s capital, sits on the southern coast, at the head of the Oslofjord. Bergen, Norway’s major western seaport, is in the heart of the fjords. When summer dawns, Norwegians draw back their blinds, open their doors, breathe in the fresh air and head onto the streets to ROCK! The land of the Vikings is home to major international music festivals, an abundance of venues, the birthplace of Black Metal and so much more. Oslo is the perfect setting for journalists, photojournalists, graphic artists, and other storytellers, no matter the medium, to practice working an international music and culture beat. Also, Norwegian language students can hone their language skills as an interpreter, working alongside our journalists and designers. Led by veteran journalists, photojournalists and educators, in partnership with the Fargo-based High Plains Reader, you will produce real stories, photos and multimedia for a U.S. and international audience. The Oslo ROCKS! program aims to jump-start your career by offering you real experience covering the world stage. Contact us and we'll send you info on our student work.
A Guide to Studying Abroad in Norway
Locations
Norway’s cities are modestly sized, but immodestly beautiful. The quaint streets and picturesque waterfronts can easily be explored on foot or through their extensive networks of public transport.
The Norwegian capital, Oslo, is an extremely pedestrian-friendly city that offers many amazing vantage points overlooking its harbor and the surrounding mountain-scapes. Oslo offers ongoing free events and attractions every day. Explore canals and cobblestone alleys, view The Scream at the Edvard Munch Museum, be amazed by Norway’s fascinating history at Norway’s National Gallery, and then wander the Vikingskipshuset, the museum of the Viking ships Oseberg and Gokstad.
Beautiful Bergen is also a popular city for study abroad in Norway, due to its proximity to some of the country’s most dramatic fjords. Funiculars, hiking trails, and panoramic views will help international students appreciate the beauty of the city. The colorful wooden houses in the center lend a fairytale air to the city, and a touch of magic to any experience of studying abroad in Norway.
If you would rather lose yourself in rural areas, you will be poised to experience unforgettable outdoor adventures by choosing to study in Norway. You can learn a new mountain sport, like skiing, whitewater rafting, hiking, climbing, or mountain biking, or you could kayak on glacier lakes, visit the Runde bird sanctuary, an island of puffins, or hike and climb the Folgefonna Glacier. The fresh air, clean water, and abundance of space make studying abroad in Norway perfect for nature lovers.
