USAC Maastricht Undergraduate Coursework

The Maastricht program is ideal for students interested in earning credit toward their degree while engaging in hands-on, student-led learning in an international setting. Regardless of the term you choose, your coursework is supplemented with experiences such as field trips, museum visits, and seminars on locations. Since the majority of Dutch citizens are fluent in English (and extremely welcoming!), connecting with locals couldn’t be easier. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Maastricht boasts picturesque architecture, medieval city walls, cobblestone alleys and streets, seventeenth-century facades, and a Roman bridge. It is conveniently located in the heart of Europe, with major capitals such as Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and London only a short train ride away. However, once you arrive in Maastricht, you may not want to leave—with a historic city center; countless numbers of inviting sidewalk cafés, pubs, and restaurants; sports facilities; shops; and numerous film, music, and theater venues, Maastricht has everything a student could wish for!

Public Health & Medicine in Europe

Develop a deeper understanding of Europe’s public health policies as well as medical practice and achievements in this study abroad program at Maastricht University (UM). It starts with a two-week introduction, which includes CES services, the Berlin Study Trip, a tour of Maastricht and the surrounding area, UM orientation, a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) workshop, a cultural awareness lecture, and integration into Dutch student life. Europeans enjoy some of the highest quality and most affordable health care in the world. However, health systems in Europe are under pressure due to an aging population, innovations, and a demand for more citizen-centered services. During this program, students examine the different attitudes to health in various European countries and compare their healthcare systems with the market-driven system of the United States. They also deepen their knowledge of genetics, immunology, or biology; gain insight into contemporary European health issues; and develop practical medical skills.

I had the best time in Maastricht!

I studied abroad Spring 2024 in Maastricht, Netherlands. And I really did have the time of my life. Studying in Maastricht, I was very challenged with academics. UM’s problem based learning strategy encourages students to lead class discussions, take an active role in choosing what to focus on, and collaborate with other students. Maastricht’s location in the heart of Europe allowed me to travel to other European countries by train with ease, making weekend travel easy. CES’s group trips and orientation helped me make friends immediately, whom I cooked dinner with, traveled with, and studied with, and who I still keep up with. If you have one choice - study abroad at Maastricht through CES!!!
