How to Study Abroad Massage Education
Locations
Many massage programs abroad are set in stunning, nature-filled locales. You can find open-air facilities on the beach, in the jungle, or next to the humbling stone face of a mountain. Choose your program based on the cultural history of the place and the massage practices that ensue, and the activities you want to fill your free time with— hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and rock climbing are all fun supplements to a fulfilling education abroad!
Costa Rica is paradisal. Mornings start with movement therapy class and breakfast, and then classes in health sciences and massage techniques start. Many campus facilities are set along beautiful tropical coasts, though the alternative is the not too shabby jungle lushness where the screech of a howler monkey might just be your wakeup call.
India is one of the most popular countries to learn massage for its long tradition of spirituality and its history of personal transformation. You can study a range of topics including body detoxification, purification kriyas, nasya, herbal oil massage, acupressure, shirodhara, and mud baths, just to name a few. A certification from India will be widely recognized and respected, and clients will appreciate the complementary services you’ll be able to offer.
Brazil Massage in Brazil is seen as a powerful form of relaxation and even a way to lose weight. They need it, with the vibrant buzz that is Rio, and the constant hum of the surrounding rainforests! Life can get expensive, but food-- good food, mind you-- is cheap and plentiful. New markets spring up daily and you’ll be able to experience the fullness of well-being that comes with eating well and taking care of your body.
Benefits
Massage therapy is a career choice that revitalizes and invigorates, while reducing stress and increasing peace of mind for both client and masseuse. Apart from technique and safety, the most important qualities a massage therapist can have are compassion and empathy. Travel strengthens these in a way nothing else can. Even if you are already a caring individual, living abroad for any period of time will open your world and your heart to the complexities and plights of those quite different from yourself. This sets you up to truly put yourself in your patient’s shoes, and help you to understand what they need and what you can give them.
It’s important to have a range of skills to be able to offer your client, based on their personality and their ailment. Different cultures have different massage techniques, and you can learn their methods firsthand when you get a degree abroad in massage therapy.
It’s also cheaper and often less complicated logistically to attend a program overseas, although you will need to be aware of and adhere to the legal requirements wherever you choose to practice. Because the programs are so immersive and you’re not living your “real life” on the side, you get a more complete experience that makes massage your life, even if just for a few months.
Program Options
Massage therapists are partners in a person's overall wellness. Rather than being exclusively for the relief of aches and pain, massage is also important in preventing certain conditions from happening. It’s good for every anatomical system in the body, from the skin to the heart, from the muscles to the connective tissue. Students of massage therapy learn how the body works, what gets things out of whack, and what the best ways are to prepare the body to heal itself. Massage theory and technique are obviously fundamental parts of any massage training, but did you know the importance of these other subjects?
An understanding of Anatomy & Physiology is crucial to being a trained massage therapist. Anatomy is the study of the structure of body parts, while physiology is the study of their relationship to one another. Similarly, Myology is the study of the muscular system and how muscles form, function, and become impaired. Without a solid base in these systems, it can be very difficult to understand how working with one part can help fix another. These are often understood differently in different cultures, with Western medicine emphasizing fixing the problem at its location and Eastern medicine seeking to understand its root, which may be in a different part of the body entirely.
Neurology is important because massage is more than simply the point of contact; it’s a whole-body healing that realigns entire systems to help your body perform the way it was designed. Your brain plays an important, if not yet fully-understood, role in creating health and happiness when the body is functioning normally. The immediate benefits of a massage reduce the levels of cortisol in the brain, and studies are ongoing about the full breadth of physical responses to touch and relaxation.
Because certifications are required in all professional practices, and are often preferred by individual clients, learning Ethics in healthcare is crucial for developing and maintaining a career beyond your schooling. These will vary based on your location, but a general understanding of autonomy, beneficence, confidentiality, and justice as they apply to delivery of healthcare. Ethical reasoning skills are developed using real life case studies through analysis of authentic cases. There may be ongoing courses to maintain your license that will consistently review these policies.
Travel Tips
One bonus of performing massages is that there is never a language barrier— the primary communication is through the universal language of touch! There are enough English-language course options in every country that offers them, so you should be able to find one that suits you to learn about it. Then you get to take your show on the road, and have one of the few careers that requires nothing but what you already carry with you— knowledge and hands!
The challenge of practicing massage abroad is setting up your clientele. You’ll likely have more than you can handle by the end of it, but getting started and growing your word-of-mouth reputation will take some time, and can be discouraging. It can help if you have other skills, such as English teaching, that can help beef up your wallet in the meantime. And hey-- local students are the perfect way to get your name into the community!
Studying massage education overseas may be hard, but when you get to balance it out with study seshes on the beach and learning how to surf actual waves and not just the internet, you’ll know why choosing to study massage therapy abroad was one of the very best decisions of your life. You’ll be constantly faced with opportunities for your own personal transformation, and grow to appreciate the age-old understanding that the only way to heal is to be healed.
