Study Abroad in Japan (J. F. Oberlin University)

Tokyo is more than a backdrop in this study abroad program—it becomes part of everyday student life. Based at J. F. Oberlin University in Machida, a well-connected suburb of Tokyo, the program allows international students to study in Japan while remaining close to one of the world’s most influential global cities. Coursework focuses on Japanese language, culture, society, media, and business, with many classes taught in English to support students from a wide range of academic backgrounds. Students may participate during the summer, for a semester, or for a full academic year, making it easy to align the program with personal and academic goals. Learning extends beyond the classroom through lectures, local field trips, and cultural activities that connect academic topics to real-life experiences in Japan. Participants live alongside Japanese and international students, creating daily opportunities for cross-cultural exchange. Upon completion, students earn an official academic transcript from J. F. Oberlin University, which may be transferable to their home institution.

Middlebury School in Japan: Tokyo

The Middlebury School in Japan offers cultural and linguistic immersion through a rigorous curriculum and adherence to the Middlebury Language Pledge. By pledging to speak only the target language abroad, students have the best chance of acquiring fluency and actively engaging in the local environment. In Japan, all participants take language, cultural reflection, community engagement courses, and content courses alongside Japanese students at International Christian University, a non-denominational university known for its superior language instruction. Students will stay in on-campus housing and have plenty of opportunities to interact with Japanese students. Because of the school's suburban location in Japan—in the Mitaka neighborhood, 30 minutes west of Tokyo—its students benefit from the advantages and opportunities of Tokyo while living and studying in a more campus-like environment. The program combines coursework, extracurricular activities, and volunteer and internship work to enable students to "live the language."

Studying abroad in Japan through USAC was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made in college. Before going, I was excited but also nervous about the language barrier and whether I’d feel out of place, but USAC made the transition way smoother than I expected. From orientation to day-to-day support, it felt like there was always someone I could reach out to if I needed help.
