To Learn in France

December 24, 2024by: Augustine Kposowa - United States
5

I learned to handle stress and surprises. Because I was behind by all week and had to make up, Then my American card was hacked and my card locked, so I opened a bank in Paris to transfer money. The immersion methods in class are 100 Xs better than in our high schools. I did some additional study outside of class reviewing vocabulary and watching a video so my French improved much more. Most things were closed so I either saw them from the outside or went to the parks which were opened. In France and there was a whole lot more of the popular stuff to see. Hearing their accent. Imagine that Italian French accent or the Australian French. The French with no who I was even if I were talking in French French are kind of alike but then they’re kind of not, this applies to people in general. Language learning has 1000 sides to it. People think they can learn quickly one way but I had to use a mixture of ways in and out of class to do what I could. Level B1 Now I know what the foreigners go through when they immigrate try to adapt themselves to a whole different country and have to speak a language different than their original.

Beyond Nutrition: A Life-Changing Internship Experience With Valencia Turia Football Club

December 21, 2024by: Alexa Nelson - United States

Program: Intern in Spain with World Endeavors

My internship with Valencia Turia Football Club was a life-changing experience, both professionally and personally. As the primary nutrition resource for the team, I provided daily counseling sessions to eight players, helping optimize their performance, health, and recovery. All players varied in age and skill level, displaying unique goals and barriers to diet change. With this diversity it challenged me to work with different types of athletes and created individually tailored plans. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply my knowledge of sports nutrition in real-world scenarios, giving me invaluable insights into the dietary needs of semi-professional athletes. Thanks to World Endeavors, the entire process—from securing the internship to finding safe housing—was seamless, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I made new connections. Beyond the internship, I had the opportunity to travel throughout Spain, visiting 10 cities and towns and fully immersing myself in the culture. After the internship was complete, I spent three weeks solo traveling across Europe, further broadening my horizons by exploring new cultures, languages, and cuisines. This internship not only sharpened my skills as a nutritionist but also deepened my appreciation for cultures around the world. I’m incredibly grateful for this experience and excited to apply what I’ve learned in both my career and personal life.

Having the opportunity to intern abroad in Costa Rica has opened so many opportunities and conversations for me. I had the absolute best experience and I couldn’t have done it without World Endeavors. They were amazing to work with! Costa Rica changed my life in such a positive way. I learned so much and would LOVE to go back vacation there. It’s incredible there and completely changed my perspective on life in general. 10/10 recommend!

An Unforgettable Experience

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Thailand through World Endeavors. My host family were some of the kindest people I have ever met, and I felt so welcomed and cared for. My internship placement was great, and I got to learn a lot about Thai culture and OT in Thailand. I was able to take a lot of weekend trips to different parts of the country and I found Thailand very easy to navigate solo. I think the biggest surprise for me was how at ease I felt when I was there. This was my first trip out of the United States, and my first time ever traveling solo, but I always felt safe and would go back in a heartbeat. My experience in Thailand is something I will cherish forever.

I enjoyed my internship and I do believe I learned a lot and gained a lot of valuable experience in my field. However, I chose no to "Would you recommend World Endeavors to a friend or colleague?" because of the financial and time cost of the program. While I definitely gained value, I struggle to determine if the value gained was worth the cost.

I had an amazing time

So I had an amazing time and I feel I did some good work, but while I was out there I started running women's sessions on human rights and sexual health. This was not continued after I left and I feel that in order to make a significant impact the work that volunteers and charity employees do must be sustainable, as in projects continued once volunteers leave. Also, although I felt very welcomed and at home with my hosts, there was very little support or coordination and everything I did was lead by what I suggested, this is not bad as project work is always a good thing that introduces new and impactful work to an organisation, but there was no organised work already in place for me to do and at times, with all the pressure for the work being on me, it became very stressful. Having said this, with the projects I did start, they were incredibly supportive of all my ideas and got me the relevant recourses and help to do them. Overall I had a wonderful experience, when I was getting ready to leave there were a few hiccups but I wouldn't put that on the project leader more on other individuals insensitivity and apathy for my situation. If I were to recommend this project to someone, it would have to be to a very independent and confidant person and someone without serious mental health issues, as thought they were sympathetic and understanding when I needed time to feel better, as I have depression, they had no real understanding of mental health and I had no one to talk to about it when I wasn't feeling great, like I tried but they didn't get it.

Working with World Endeavors was a very smooth process

I honestly did not get much out of my internship with the CCCL. The position was perfect on paper, but upon arrival, I found the Center to be an unwelcoming and growth-stunting work environment in which interns were largely ignored, or if not ignored, then patronized when they took initiative despite prior encouragement to do just that. The staff was reserved, cliquey, and resistant to change. Most of my professional learning was related to dealing with a hostile work environment & conflict in the workplace. My personal goals related to cultural immersion were very much fulfilled, however. I learned so much through weekend excursions and quality time with my host family. Overall, I am very glad that I participated in this experience, but I would highly recommend avoiding intern placements with the CCCL in the future, and am happy to discuss this further. Working with World Endeavors was a very smooth process and I enjoyed my conversations with my coordinator – she was hugely helpful in customizing my experience, and I appreciated her check-ins throughout the program. Thank you!

My experience was everything I hoped it would be

My experience was everything I hoped it would be. I learned so much while traveling about myself, about what I would like to do in the future, and I greatly enjoyed my internship and can see myself continuing to coach in the future. My internship greatly caters to my upcoming classes this school year, and I feel more prepared and excited now that I have experiences I can apply to what I’m learning. I also reached my goal of getting out of my comfort zone as an international intern and learned a lot about myself and enjoyed the process of doing so.

Was given the opportunity to be involved in various types of tasks across different departments, thus boosting my overall learning curve and understanding of the industry. Additionally, the internship period was ideal as it was the busiest period of the year for the organization, paving the way for me to gain quality experiences in the industry I’ve always been passionate about.

I think that World Endeavors coordinators should be more informed about the real conditions and stuffs of the destination country, town and house. A solution might be to visit the accomodation and the city in order to get as many information as possibile.

Everything worked out great with my experience except for the fact that when i got there my program hadn't been organized at all and there were a bounch of misfortuned consequences because of that. But yes, I would still recommend World Endeavors to a friend or colleague.

Incredible experience

This was an incredible experience and worth every penny. It warms your heart, opens your eyes, and humbles you to get outside of your bubble and immerse yourself with other less privileged cultures. The program coordinators and support team from Green Lion treated me like family, and I've made life long friends with these people. Only constructive advice - I didn't have wifi. I had to spend my own money and I was told I would have a connection from home base. In addition, I was living with an older lady so I felt my curfew was at the mercy of hers. I didn't want to knock on the door too late and wake her up, so I recommend arranging for a spare key to be made in the future if people are staying in someone's home so they can return without disturbing the residents.

The academic and professional goals were definitely met. The area of personal goals that was lacking was in building relationships outside of the workplace. Because I am only 17, I struggled to meet anyone close to my age.

I learned a great deal from the relationships I built in Buenos Aires

I learned a great deal from the relationships I built in Buenos Aires - folks from Vos Spanish School, my homestay, and both work places. I also learned a quite a bit from navigating a foreign city independently, and feel more confident in my Spanish and general ability to handle complex situations. My goal of contributing meaningfully to a workplace / community was felt at CHAP, but less so at CAII where there was less structure and direction.
