With its 7000 islands and history of Spanish rule, the Philippines offer a unique Asian experience set apart geographically and culturally from mainland Asia. Projects are available for anyone interested in volunteering in the developing world, whether you are student on a gap year or summer vacation, a professional on career break, or a retired volunteer. Projects Abroad in the Philippines is based on Cebu Island, part of the Visayan Islands region. While living with local host families in Cebu City and surrounding smaller towns, volunteers can work in orphanages or care centers helping disadvantaged children, teach English in both primary and secondary schools, do medical internships in the local hospitals, intern in journalism, coach sports, and learn the local Cebuano language.
Program Highlights
In Cebu City itself you can explore Carbon Market, a traditional farmer’s market, or embrace the vast modern malls, complete with movie theaters and restaurants.
You can visit Fort San Pedro and Magellan’s Cross to learn about the Spanish conquest. The Spanish influence is felt in the regular fiestas and street parades.
On Cebu Island, the beaches in the north and southwest offer the classic combination of white sand and clear seas with spectacular diving or snorkeling.
If you've more travel time, Philippines has endless possibilities for island hopping. If you try to visit every island in the country at a rate of one per day, you’d be traveling for over 20 years!
The rest of Southeast Asia is only a short flight away and with Cebu City having an international airport with many budget airlines offering bargain flights.

Unforgettable
July 22, 2024by: Olivia Program: Volunteering Abroad in the Philippines with Projects AbroadThe medical mission trip in the Philippines is truly a one of a kind experience. I have had so many opportunities to increase my patient care experience, and see a variety of different health related things. From being in the Delivery Room, to taking vitals, each experience was so special and unique. It also wouldn’t be this amazing without the projects abroad staff. They are all so helpful and amazing!!!
Japanese teaching skills, communication skills, learning differences between Japan and Philippines
April 05, 2024by: KONA SAEGUSAProgram: Volunteering Abroad in the Philippines with Projects AbroadI taught how to say Japanese, wear kimono, make something by using origami to elementary school students. Also, I taught how to wash your hands and brush your teeth to kindergarten students. Moreover, all of students taught me how to say something in Philippines language and traditional cultures. When I gave them many Japanese traditional presents, all of them were happy, and I was also given some presents by them. The most memorable experience for me was when I gave Japanese antiperspirant products to kindergarten students, not only did they start taking care of themselves, but they also took care of me.

Thank you for writing your review, Kona! It's great to read about your experience teaching students in the Philippines. Thanks for choosing Projects Abroad!
