4 weeks volunteering in Ghana!

by: Ishan ReeseProgram: Projects Abroad in Ghana

I truly enjoyed immersing myself in Ghanaian culture as well as experiencing my day to day life in a country new to me. I valued the little things during my experience, such as the food, the sights, and even my commute to and from work; but more significant to me were the everyday conversations with my host family, my project coordinator, my colleagues at my placement, and even people I met on a day to day basis. I spent two weeks at a law firm in Accra under the law and human rights program. Everyone at the firm was very kind and supportive, and it was a very committed and driven office in terms of the work they are doing. My second two weeks were spent at a media house in Accra for the journalism program. I got to witness behind the scenes of the everyday routine of a media house and their reporting on daily news. I also got to shadow one of the reporters a couple times while he was out in the city searching for and reporting on stories. My host family was very welcoming and always interested to learn about my life and story, and likewise share their experiences too. My project coordinator was also so supportive during my time in Accra, but additionally was a true friend to me in Ghana. I additionally appreciated engaging in insightful conversations about a wide range of topics and perspectives with various people in Ghana, which are interactions I wouldn't have gotten the chance to experience and learn from if not for Project Abroad's promotion of immersion in your host country. There's so much to learn and take home with you through such volunteering experiences around the world!

Highly recommend!

The time I spent with Projects Abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned so much, gained so much experience in the field of human rights, met the most amazing people and was lucky to see the beauty of Ghana. I cannot recommend this experience enough, it helped me grow as a person and in my career, thank you Projects Abroad for making it so memorable.

Best occupational therapy volunteer experience!

I traveled with Projects Abroad to Accra, Ghana for the Projects for Professions as a licensed occupational therapist. From the transportation at the airport, to a day tour and orientation, home stay accommodations, cultural activities, and my volunteer placements, my experience gave me skills I utilize in my profession that I could not obtain anywhere else. I felt safe, comfortable, and always had support from staff. The other volunteers turned into family, and I still keep in touch with some to this day. I highly recommend Projects Abroad for all volunteering experiences!

I had a semester off before starting university and I wanted to do something worthwhile with my time. I had never left the country before. I knew I wanted to teach abroad, so I researched volunteer programs where I could teach in some form.
