Interning on a Medicine project in Peru is a transformative journey into the heart of the Andes. Based in the ancient Incan capital of Cusco, this program offers a unique look at a developing healthcare system. You’ll gain a massive competitive edge by shadowing skilled professionals in diverse settings, from bustling public hospitals to specialized children’s rehabilitation centers. This project is perfect for pre-meds, students, or professionals looking to broaden their global perspective. You’ll have the chance to rotate through specialties like gynecology, pediatrics, and obstetrics. Under the guidance of local doctors, you’ll observe diagnoses and specialized treatments firsthand. Beyond the clinic, you’ll join community outreaches to provide essential health checks and workshops to underprivileged populations. Please note that intermediate Spanish is required to ensure you can connect with staff and patients.

I signed up for the medical internship but was blindly placed in midwifery. additionally, i was promised at least 15 hours of community service, yet only participated in maybe 5 hours and that is me being generous. additionally, i asked to shadow surgeries or to be placed in a different clinic a few times and each time, i was told someone would follow up but i had to be the one who was persistent in order to get an answer. i paid so much money to come out to peru, only to learn that my money is worth so much more than what i got out here so i feel as though i wasted a bunch of money and time because even that amount of money was not worth just sitting in a clinic for hours on end. i understand that in a hospital or clinical setting, there is not always action, but you cannot tell me that in the entire month of July, the only surgeries available for me to see took place the final week i was here. i spent most of my “shadowing” hours sitting in a break room because there were no patients.
