On this four-week language immersion program in China for students completing grades 9 – 12, take Mandarin classes each day in Beijing and immerse yourself in the city's culture and history. Then travel north to Chengde, where you have the opportunity to spend a week-long homestay with a welcoming Chinese host family. Daily Mandarin classes continue and, in the afternoons, take excursions with your Putney Student Travel group. Climb the Great Wall, meet with local high schoolers to practice your Chinese and discuss cultural differences, and learn about the history of China's last dynasty, the Manchus. Spend four days trekking across the steppes of Inner Mongolia, staying in yurts and practicing your Mandarin with Mongolian children. Head to Chengdu in southwestern China and learn to make classic Sichuan dishes. Round out your summer program with five days in Western Sichuan (with a pit stop at a Giant Panda Reserve), immersed in majestic Tibetan villages surrounded by mountain peaks. Teach English to schoolchildren, then head to Shanghai for the last few days of your trip.
