Every week, I see volunteers build meaningful relationships with our partner foundations, local children, and community members. Watching these connections grow and seeing the positive impact they have on everyone involved is what inspires me every day.</p>
<p>I also enjoy showing our volunteers the authentic side of Colombia and helping them feel at home. For me, the most rewarding part is seeing people leave not only with unforgettable memories, but also with a deeper understanding of our country and lifelong friendships.</p>
<h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The most meaningful experiences often happen when things don't go exactly as planned.</p>
<p>I'd also remind myself that travel isn't just about visiting new places—it's about connecting with people and learning from different cultures. Take the time to listen, ask questions, and embrace local traditions. Those moments will stay with you far longer than any photo.</p>
<p>Finally, I'd say: learn a few words of the local language before you arrive. Even a simple "hello" or "thank you" can open doors, create genuine connections, and show respect for the community you're visiting. Language learning has been one of the greatest things I changed in my life recently.</p>
<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3>
<p>No two days are exactly the same, and that's one of the things I love most about my job. My day usually starts by checking in with our volunteers and making sure everyone is ready for the day's activities.</p>
<p>In the afternoons, I accompany our volunteers to one of our partner foundations, where we support local children through sports, education, or community activities. I coordinate with the foundation staff, help volunteers feel comfortable, and make sure everything runs smoothly. It's incredibly rewarding to see friendships develop despite language and cultural differences.</p>
<p>Some days, I also lead cultural activities, city tours, or excursions, giving our participants the chance to experience Colombia beyond the typical tourist attractions. Every day is different, but my goal is always the same: to create meaningful experiences for both our volunteers and the local communities we work with.</p>
<h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3>

<p>One of the biggest challenges is making sure that every volunteer feels comfortable and confident, especially during their first few days in a new country. Many arrive not knowing anyone, speaking little or no Spanish, or feeling unsure about what to expect.</p>
<p>I overcome this by creating a welcoming environment from day one. I take the time to get to know each volunteer personally, answer their questions, and encourage them to connect with the local community and with each other. Seeing them become more confident and independent over the course of their stay is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.</p>
<p>Another challenge is coordinating activities with different partner foundations, each with their own schedules and needs. Good communication, flexibility, and close relationships with our local partners help us adapt and ensure that every activity benefits both the volunteers and the communities we support.</p>

<p>We work toward this mission by building long-term partnerships with local foundations and making sure our programs genuinely support their needs. We also focus on small groups and personalized experiences, so every volunteer feels connected and can make a real impact.</p>
<p>As the local coordinator, I work closely with both our volunteers and our partner organizations every day. <p>We're very excited about how Voluntours Colombia is growing. What started with community projects in Bucaramanga has expanded into a nationwide network of meaningful volunteer and cultural experiences across Colombia.</p>
<p>While we continue to strengthen our long-term partnerships with local foundations in Bucaramanga, we're also developing new programs in destinations such as Cartagena, the Amazon, Nuquí, Los Llanos, and El Cocuy. Our goal is to give travelers the opportunity to experience the incredible diversity of Colombia while supporting local communities in a responsible and sustainable way.</p>
<p>At the same time, we're continuously improving the volunteer experience by introducing new cultural activities, adventure tours, and Spanish immersion options. As we grow, one thing remains unchanged: our commitment to offering authentic, locally led experiences that create a positive impact for both our participants and our partner communities.</p>
<h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h3>
<p>I hope every participant leaves with much more than great photos and unforgettable memories. I want them to leave with meaningful friendships, a deeper understanding of Colombian culture, and the feeling that they truly made a positive impact in the communities they visited.</p>
<p>Many volunteers arrive expecting to give something, but they often tell us they received even more in return. They gain new perspectives, become more confident, improve their Spanish, and discover a side of Colombia that most tourists never experience.</p>
<p>Above all, I hope they leave feeling inspired—to continue exploring the world with an open mind, to appreciate different cultures, and to remember that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3>
<p>Traveling abroad helps us see the world from a different perspective. When we experience another culture firsthand, we realize that people may live differently, but we often share the same values, dreams, and kindness. It breaks down stereotypes and helps us become more open-minded and empathetic.</p>
<p>I think it's especially important to travel with curiosity rather than expectations. By spending time with local communities, trying new foods, learning a different language, and stepping outside our comfort zone, we grow in ways that aren't possible from home.</p>
<p>For me, the greatest value of travel is the human connection. The friendships, conversations, and shared experiences with people from different backgrounds often become the most meaningful memories—and they remind us that, despite our differences, we have far more in common than we think.</p>
<h3>What questions do participants often ask you, and how do you typically respond?</h3>
<p>Before arriving, participants often ask if it's safe to travel to Colombia, whether they need to speak Spanish, and what they can expect from the volunteer projects. I always tell them that Colombia has changed tremendously over the years, and that with the right local guidance, it's an incredibly welcoming and rewarding destination. I also reassure them that speaking Spanish isn't a requirement—we're here to support them, and many volunteers see it as a great opportunity to learn.</p>
<p>Once they're here, the questions become much more practical: where to find the best local food, what to do on weekends, or how to connect with local people. I love sharing my favorite places and helping participants discover the authentic side of Colombia beyond the typical tourist attractions.</p>
<p>My goal is always to make our volunteers feel informed, confident, and at home. I want them to know that no question is too small and that our team is here to support them throughout their entire journey.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>

<h3>What was your favorite part about your Colombia?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about Colombia, and especially Bucaramanga, was the combination of warmth from the people and the authenticity of everyday life. I really enjoyed how open and welcoming everyone was, which made it easy to feel at home quickly.</p>
<p>In Bucaramanga, I liked that it is not a typical tourist city, so everything felt more real and unfiltered. From the volunteer activities to the Spanish classes and simple moments like walking through the city or sharing time at the hostel, I always felt connected to local life.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The mix of meaningful work, cultural exchange, and the relaxed but vibrant atmosphere made it my favorite part of the whole experience.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>What made my experience truly extraordinary was the combination of meaningful community work and the depth of personal connection I was able to build in such a short time. It wasn’t just about volunteering in different projects, but about being welcomed into real local environments where I could interact with people in a very genuine way.</p>
<p>Visiting the prison, joining football sessions with the Goles project, and working with the CAPAZ Foundation were especially impactful, because they showed me how much positive change can come from education, sport, and human connection.</p>
<p>At the same time, learning Spanish daily and living in a shared environment with other travelers made the experience feel very immersive and personal. All of this together created moments that were both challenging and incredibly rewarding.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff supported me in a very consistent and personal way throughout the whole program. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and guided, which made the transition into a new country much easier. They helped with practical things like settling in, explaining the schedule, and making sure I understood each activity before participating.</p>
<p>During the program, they were always available if I had questions or needed help, whether it was about transportation, Spanish classes, or the volunteer projects themselves. What stood out most was that they didn’t just organize things, but were genuinely present and involved in the experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This created a sense of safety and trust, which allowed me to focus fully on the activities and the cultural exchange without worrying about logistics.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>One thing I wish I would have done differently is to slow down even more and take more time to reflect in the moment. The experience was quite intense and full of activities, new people, and impressions, so sometimes I focused too much on what was next instead of fully appreciating what was happening right then.</p>
<p>Looking back, I would have tried to document more of the small everyday moments and also spend a bit more individual time with local people outside of the organized activities. I think that would have made the experience even deeper and allowed me to connect even more with the culture and daily life in Colombia.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day in Colombia started quite early and followed a structured but varied routine. In the morning, I usually had Spanish classes, which helped me improve my language skills and also made it easier to connect with locals during the rest of the day.</p>
<p>After lunch, the schedule would change depending on the day. Some afternoons I participated in volunteer activities such as visiting community projects, supporting educational or sports initiatives, or joining local foundations like CAPAZ or football sessions with Goles. Other days were more cultural, including city tours or time to explore Bucaramanga with other volunteers.</p>
<p>In the evenings, I often spent time at the hostel with other travelers, sharing stories, playing games, or just relaxing after a full day. It was a good balance between structured learning, meaningful volunteering, and social time, which made each day feel different but always engaging.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>In my free time abroad, I enjoyed a mix of simple social moments and exploring the local environment. A lot of the time I would spend time with other volunteers at the hostel, sharing meals, talking about our experiences, or just relaxing after a busy day.</p>
<p>I also really enjoyed going out in Bucaramanga, whether it was grabbing food locally, walking around the city, or joining small spontaneous activities with others. Those unplanned moments often turned out to be the most memorable, because they felt very authentic and gave me a chance to experience the city beyond the structured program.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed at Zamia Hostel in Bucaramanga, which was a shared accommodation for volunteers and travelers. It was simple, comfortable, and had everything I needed for a longer stay, but what I appreciated most was the atmosphere.</p>
<p>The best part was definitely the social environment. It was very easy to meet other volunteers and travelers, which created a strong sense of community from the beginning. After a full day of activities, it felt great to come back to a place where you could share experiences, cook together, or just relax and talk.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the same time, it still offered enough space for rest and privacy when needed, which made it a really good balance overall.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>One thing every future participant should know is that the experience is much more immersive and personal than a typical “structured volunteer program.” You are not just observing or doing isolated tasks—you are actively engaging with local people, communities, and daily life from the very beginning.</p>
<p>That means it helps a lot to arrive with an open mind, flexibility, and a willingness to adapt to a different pace and culture. Spanish will also make a big difference in how deeply you can connect, so even a basic effort to learn the language beforehand or during the program really enhances the experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you come with the right mindset, the program becomes not just volunteering, but a very meaningful cultural exchange.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend your Voluntours Colombia to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes, I would definitely recommend Voluntours Colombia to others. What makes it special is that it goes beyond a typical volunteer placement and creates a real cultural exchange experience. You are not only supporting meaningful local projects, but also living and learning within the community, which makes everything feel authentic and personal.</p>
<p>The combination of structured support, Spanish classes, and diverse activities like community work, sports programs, and cultural experiences gives a very well-rounded experience. <h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>The biggest benefit of traveling abroad, in my experience, is the shift in perspective it creates. When you step into a completely different cultural and social environment, you start to question your own assumptions and see the world in a broader, more open way.</p>
<p>It also forces you to grow personally. You become more adaptable, independent, and confident because you constantly face new situations, languages, and ways of doing things. On top of that, the human connections you build abroad are incredibly valuable—you meet people you would never encounter in your everyday life, and those interactions often stay with you long after the trip ends.</p>

<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Now that I’m back home, my time abroad has had a lasting impact on how I see everyday life and my priorities. The experience helped me become more independent, adaptable, and open-minded, especially when dealing with unfamiliar situations or environments.<br><br>It also changed the way I relate to other cultures and people. I now feel much more aware of how different realities can be, and I value human connection and cultural exchange much more than before.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On a personal level, I also gained confidence, especially in communicating in Spanish and in stepping outside of my comfort zone. Overall, it feels like the experience didn’t just end when I came home—it still shapes how I think and how I approach new challenges.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, is when a trip goes beyond sightseeing and comfort and becomes a real exchange between people, cultures, and perspectives. It’s not just about visiting a new place, but about taking part in daily life, understanding local realities, and contributing in a small but genuine way.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>As a high school student, there were not many opportunities to travel to a new place, experience a different culture, and step outside of my comfort zone. School the World immediately caught my attention because it combined my desire to explore the world with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Going into my sophomore year, I was eager to branch out, try new things, and find a way to help others while learning from new experiences. When I was introduced to School the World, I was immediately interested and signed up for the next trip in February.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I was excited not only to see a new country, but also to connect with communities, learn from the people I met, and better understand the importance of education and service. I enjoyed my trip so much that I signed up for the very next trip in July as well as Panama the following year.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/school-the-world rel="" target="_self" class="link">School the World</a>?</h3>
<p>Many students from my town had participated in School the World’s <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/school-the-world/programs/help-build-schools-honduras-panama-guatemala-190313 rel="" target="_self" class="link">programs</a>, and they all came back with incredible stories and only positive things to say about their experiences. Hearing about their trips introduced me to the organization and the impact it was making through education, service, and cultural exchange.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I was especially drawn to School the World because it provided the opportunity to travel alongside other students my age while stepping into a new environment and learning from the communities we were working with. I was excited to be part of an experience that combined adventure, personal growth, and meaningful service, something that many students my age do not have the opportunity to experience.</p>

<p>Through my trips with School the World, I have had the opportunity to visit Panama twice and Honduras once. Both countries offered endless beauty, not only through their landscapes but through the people and communities I was fortunate enough to meet.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My favorite part of each experience was the genuine kindness and welcoming nature of the communities we worked with. They welcomed us with open arms, shared their stories and traditions, and allowed us to build meaningful connections despite our different backgrounds.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I loved being able to find common ground with people who had different experiences than my own and learn from their perspectives. These relationships and the connections I made are what made my time in both countries so memorable.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>One element that made my experience truly extraordinary was the meaningful connections I was able to create with the students and members of the communities we worked with in such a short amount of time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Despite language barriers, cultural differences, and age gaps, I was able to build relationships rooted in trust, respect, and appreciation. Some of the most memorable moments came from simple interactions, where a smile, a game, or a shared experience was enough to create a genuine connection.&nbsp;</p>
<p>These experiences reminded me of the power of human connection and showed me that people from different backgrounds can come together in meaningful ways. My time abroad not only allowed me to serve others but also helped me grow, gain a deeper understanding of the world, and become even more grateful for the opportunities I have.</p>

<p>The local staff were the backbone of my entire experience and played an essential role in making the program successful. From locally based officials and engineers to administrative staff, every person contributed to creating a meaningful and well-organized experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They ensured that our safety, care, and comfort were always a priority while still allowing us to have an authentic connection with the communities we were serving. Their knowledge, guidance, and dedication helped us better understand the culture and impact of the work we were doing.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>During my trips, one thing I wish I had done differently was initiate connections with community members and students right from the beginning. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed at the start of a trip with the new environment, the project goals, celebrations, and the many tasks that need to be completed.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Looking back, I realize how important it was to take a step back and focus more on the relationships I was building rather than just the work we were accomplishing. The people we met were the most meaningful part of the experience, and I wish I had spent even more time learning their stories, sharing moments with them, and creating deeper connections from the very first day.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day on a School the World trip began with an early wake-up followed by breakfast with the group. After eating, we would board the bus and make our way to the community we were working in. The drive could range anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, but it always went by quickly because of the excitement and anticipation for the day ahead.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Once we arrived, we would jump right into the project, whether that meant painting, helping with construction, or working on the playground. Around midday, we would take a break for recess, which was always one of my favorite parts of the day. The kids would be eager to play soccer, blow bubbles, or teach us their favorite games.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After the workday ended, we would head back to the hotel, where many of us would spend time together by the beach or pool if available. The day would end with dinner and a group reflection where we shared our highs and lows, something that surprised us, or a moment that made us smile.&nbsp;</p>
<p>These conversations were a meaningful way to reflect on the experiences we shared and the connections we made throughout the day.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>Much of my free time during my trips was spent enjoying the beautiful surroundings and spending time with the group. In Panama, I loved swimming at the beach down the road from where we stayed, while in Honduras, many of us spent our afternoons relaxing by the pool.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Whether we were playing games in the water, starting friendly competitions, or simply sitting around a table talking for hours, these moments became some of my favorite memories. My free time was not only a chance to relax after a busy day of service but also an opportunity to get to know my fellow travelers better, strengthen friendships, and reflect on the experiences we were sharing together.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>On all of my trips, we stayed in small, locally run hotels that provided a comfortable and welcoming environment throughout our experience. From the moment we arrived, the owners and staff made us feel at home and ensured that we had everything we needed. I appreciated how personal the experience felt compared to staying in a large hotel, as we were able to build relationships with the people who were hosting us.&nbsp;</p>
<p>They took great care in preparing our meals, making sure we were comfortable, and creating a warm atmosphere for our group. One of my favorite memories was when the hotel owners joined us for karaoke one night, showing the genuine kindness and hospitality that made our accommodations feel like more than just a place to stay.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Before going on a School the World trip, one of the most important things to know is the value of staying open-minded and embracing every new experience that comes your way.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Traveling to a new country and stepping outside of your comfort zone can feel intimidating at first, but the experience becomes so much more meaningful when you are willing to try new things, meet new people, and learn from the community around you.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The moments you may not expect or plan for often become the most memorable parts of the trip. Future participants should go into the experience ready to be present, challenge themselves, and fully commit to everything the program has to offer.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend School the World to others? Why?</h3>
<p>I would absolutely recommend a trip with School the World to anyone who is open to the experience. These trips truly changed my outlook on life in the US and allowed me to understand just how much I can accomplish when I make use of the opportunities I had previously overlooked.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Traveling with this program opens your eyes to perspectives you simply cannot gain at home, and the connections you build, both with the communities you serve and the people you travel alongside, stay with you long after you return. This is an opportunity you should not pass up. Don't lose the chance to make a difference in your own life and in someone else's.</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>I think the biggest benefit of traveling with School the World is the new perspective you gain, but also the one you provide. It is not only you learning from the community, but also the community learning from you.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Travel has a unique way of dismantling assumptions you didn't even know you held, replacing them with a deeper appreciation for different ways of life. You return home not just with memories, but with a genuinely shifted worldview that influences how you approach challenges, relationships, and opportunities in your everyday life. The exchange is mutual, meaningful, and lasting.</p>

<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Since returning home, I find myself practicing more gratitude for all that I have and all that I am offered each and every day. I am now able to appreciate the small things I previously left unnoticed and take advantage of the opportunities that are within my reach.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The experience reminded me that access to education, resources, and community support are gifts, not guarantees, and that mindset has motivated me to show up more fully in everything I do. I am more intentional, more compassionate, and more driven to make a positive impact in my own community, inspired by the people I met abroad who do so much with so little.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>To me, meaningful travel means being able to return home changed. The addition of a new experience, a new relationship, or a new perspective is enough to classify a trip as a success.&nbsp;</p>
<p>But beyond that, meaningful travel involves a genuine exchange, one where both you and the people you encounter walk away with something valuable. It is about stepping outside of your comfort zone with an open mind and a willingness to listen, learn, and grow.&nbsp;</p>
<p>When travel leaves a mark on your heart and quietly reshapes the way you move through the world, that is when you know it truly meant something.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>I have always wanted to experience a culture from the inside rather than simply visiting as a tourist. After finishing an important period in my life, I felt it was the perfect moment to challenge myself, improve my Spanish, and discover a completely different environment.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Colombia attracted me because of its rich culture, warm people, and incredible diversity. I also wanted to contribute to a meaningful project and have a positive impact while traveling. Going abroad seemed like the perfect opportunity to grow personally, gain confidence, and create unforgettable memories while stepping outside my comfort zone.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/voluntours-colombia rel="" target="_self" class="link">Voluntours Colombia</a>?</h3>

<p>I was looking for a program that would allow me to improve my Spanish while also making a meaningful contribution to a local community.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/voluntours-colombia/programs/sports-children-and-community-volunteering-in-bucaramanga-193730 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Children &amp; Sports Program</a> offered exactly that combination. Every morning, I could attend Spanish classes and immediately put what I learned into practice during my volunteer activities and daily interactions with locals.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also appreciated that Voluntours Colombia offered a very personal and authentic experience rather than a traditional tourist program. The opportunity to combine language learning, volunteering, cultural immersion, and community engagement made it the perfect choice for me.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Colombia?</h3>
<p>One of my favorite aspects of Bucaramanga was how easy it was to immerse myself in daily Colombian life. Thanks to my Spanish classes every morning, I became more confident communicating with locals and was able to build genuine friendships throughout my stay.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Whether I was volunteering, playing volleyball, visiting local restaurants, or exploring the city with friends, I constantly had opportunities to practice Spanish and experience the culture firsthand. Bucaramanga felt authentic, welcoming, and far less touristy than many other destinations, which made the experience even more special.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>One of the most extraordinary parts of my experience was the variety of ways I could connect with different communities. While my main project focused on working with children through sports activities, every Monday I also had the opportunity to teach English classes to inmates participating in a rehabilitation and reintegration program.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Those sessions had a profound impact on me. Listening to their stories, seeing their motivation to learn, and witnessing their efforts to build a better future challenged many of my assumptions and gave me a deeper understanding of second chances.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Combined with the friendships I built, my involvement in a local volleyball group, and the cultural immersion I experienced every day, these moments made my time in Colombia truly unforgettable.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff was one of the highlights of my experience. From the moment I arrived, Laura, Luisa, and Simon made me feel welcomed, safe, and supported. They helped me settle into the city, explained local customs, and were always available whenever I had questions or needed assistance.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Throughout the program, they regularly checked in with volunteers to make sure everything was going well and helped us make the most of our time in Colombia. Their local knowledge also allowed us to discover places and experiences that we probably would never have found on our own. Their dedication and friendliness created an environment where I felt comfortable from day one.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>If I could do one thing differently, I would have stayed longer. It took only a few weeks for Bucaramanga to feel like home, and just as I had established strong friendships and settled into my routine, it was time to leave. There were still many places I wanted to visit and more projects I wanted to get involved with.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Looking back, I realize that the longer you stay, the deeper your connections become and the more you can immerse yourself in the local culture. I would definitely recommend future participants give themselves as much time as possible to fully enjoy the experience.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day started with breakfast before heading to my Spanish classes in the morning. The classes were interactive, practical, and adapted to my level, which helped me gain confidence in speaking Spanish.&nbsp;</p>
<p>After class, I usually had lunch before participating in volunteer activities with children through sports and recreational programs. On Mondays, I also joined English classes for inmates involved in a rehabilitation program, which became one of the most impactful parts of my experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In the evenings, I often met friends, explored Bucaramanga, practiced Spanish with locals, or attended volleyball training with a local team.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>During my free time, I loved exploring Bucaramanga and spending time with the amazing people I met during my stay. One of the best decisions I made was joining a local volleyball group, which allowed me to meet Colombians and become part of the local community. I also enjoyed visiting cafés, exploring nearby towns, hiking, trying traditional Colombian food, and participating in social activities with other volunteers.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Weekends were often filled with excursions and adventures around the Santander region, one weekend we went to Barichara and did paragliding on the way, it was awesome. Because there was always something happening, I never felt bored, and every week brought new opportunities to discover different aspects of Colombian culture</p>

<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I stayed in the girls' dormitory at Zamia Hostel, which quickly became much more than just a place to sleep. The hostel provided a comfortable and welcoming environment where volunteers from different countries could meet, share experiences, and build friendships.&nbsp;</p>
<p>What I liked most was the sense of community. There was always someone to talk to, explore the city with, or plan weekend trips together. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere made it easy to feel at home.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Living with other travelers and volunteers created many memorable moments and friendships that continued even after the program ended.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Future participants should know that this program offers much more than volunteering. The Spanish classes are an important part of the experience and greatly enhance your ability to connect with the local community.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Even if your Spanish is basic when you arrive, you will quickly gain confidence because you use the language every day—in class, during volunteering activities, and while spending time with local people.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The combination of language learning, community engagement, and cultural immersion creates a much deeper and more rewarding experience than traditional travel.</p>

<p>Absolutely. I would highly recommend Voluntours Colombia to anyone looking for an authentic and meaningful experience abroad.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The organization genuinely cares about both the volunteers and the local communities they support. The projects are well organized, the staff is incredibly supportive, and the overall experience allows participants to fully immerse themselves in Colombian culture.&nbsp;</p>
<p>What makes this program special is the personal approach and the strong sense of community that develops among volunteers and locals. I left Colombia with amazing memories, valuable life lessons, and friendships that I will keep for many years.</p>

<p>Traveling abroad pushes you to challenge assumptions, communicate with people from different backgrounds, and become more open-minded. These are lessons that stay with you long after the trip has ended and continue to influence your personal and professional life.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>My experience in Colombia changed the way I see both travel and community engagement.</p>

<p>Working with children taught me patience and creativity, but the English classes with inmates had an especially lasting impact on me. Meeting people who were actively working to rebuild their lives reminded me of the importance of empathy, education, and second chances.&nbsp;</p>
<p>These experiences helped me become more open-minded and grateful while strengthening my confidence and intercultural communication skills. I returned home with lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deeper understanding of how meaningful human connections can transcend cultural and social differences.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel is about creating genuine connections and leaving a positive impact wherever possible.&nbsp;</p>
<p>During my time in Colombia, meaningful travel meant not only exploring a beautiful country but also becoming involved in local communities. Whether I was working with children, teaching English to inmates in a rehabilitation program, or simply spending time with local friends, I was constantly learning from the people around me.&nbsp;</p>
<p>These experiences taught me that travel is most rewarding when it goes beyond sightseeing and allows you to contribute, learn, and build relationships that continue long after the journey ends.</p>
