FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about International Medical Aid (IMA).

Who can apply, including high-school and gap-year students?

Applicants include high-school students ages 14+, pre-health undergraduates, graduate students in health professions, and post-baccalaureate or gap-year students. Your age, education and experience guide placement activities. Younger participants follow IMA’s supervised high-school pathway.

What will I do in the Cusco program?

IMA’s healthcare internships in Peru combine hospital shadowing, clinical simulations, global health lectures and community outreach. Observe physicians, PAs and other providers, then discuss what you learn with mentors. Departments and activities vary by session and preparation; students do not provide independent patient care.

How do Spanish and local culture fit into the experience?

Hospital rotations introduce medical Spanish and communication in Peru’s healthcare system. Community activities also show how local history and culture affect care. Discuss your Spanish preparation with IMA when applying so the team can explain the placement’s language expectations. The Peru program page describes this learning environment.

What mentorship and preparation will I receive?

A Program Mentor helps you prepare and set learning goals before departure. Orientation introduces the local health system, placement routines and professional expectations. Clinical mentors help you discuss what you observe and connect it with your studies or career plans. Read about IMA’s mentorship and learning model.

How does IMA support safety and wellbeing abroad?

IMA provides orientation, secure residences, program transport, and 24/7 local and U.S.-based support. Staff help with everyday concerns and emergencies. IMA reports a 100% safety rating on its safety and security page, which explains its supervision, transport and emergency arrangements.

Where will I live, and what is daily life like?

You share IMA-arranged accommodation with other interns, with meals, Wi-Fi and transport to placements. Living together gives you time to compare observations and prepare for the next day. IMA’s program residences page describes accommodation. Cultural activities introduce local history and daily life; optional major excursions cost extra.

When can I start, and how long can I stay?

Cusco uses fixed summer and winter sessions lasting 2–4 weeks. Select a published session rather than assuming weekly arrivals are available. The Peru dates and fees table lists current start dates, durations and availability; the admissions team can confirm which session fits your plans.

Can I receive credit, verified hours or admissions support?

IMA can document your experience; your school decides whether it qualifies for credit or specific hours. Alumni admissions services and recommendations depend on completion and evaluation requirements. Discuss your goals before enrollment and review IMA’s program completion terms so you understand what applies to your stay.

What are the program costs and payment arrangements?

The two-week Program Fee is US$3,995, plus a separate US$995 Program Deposit (US$4,990 combined). Longer stays cost more. Program dates and fees explain inclusions and additional expenses. The deposit is nonrefundable; payment plans and conditional Program Fee refunds follow IMA’s payment and cancellation terms.

Are donations and Program Fees tax-deductible in the U.S.?

International Medical Aid is a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For U.S. taxpayers, qualifying charitable contributions may be deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. Program Fees and participation-related expenses have separate tax considerations. Consult a qualified tax professional about your eligibility.
