<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>I wanted to experience a culture that contrasted with our own and have the opportunity to learn firsthand about that culture and language.</p>
<p>The opportunity to be an exchange student—alone and immersed in another culture—was different than a group tour to another country and appealed to me in that way. I did not want to be a tourist, even as a student member of a semester abroad-type program.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/youth-for-understanding rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Youth For Understanding (YFU)</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>I chose YFU from among the three or four organizations with applications available in our high school because it didn’t require my family to have existing connections to it, like the Rotary Club did.</p>
<p>Also, YFU offered a summer program. Once I learned about it, I wanted to try the summer program rather than miss a year of school.</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Germany?</h3>
<p>Being both a foreign student and accepted as a part of life in our small village.</p>
<p>I can imagine that if I were obviously racially different from the host country, there may have been some more uncomfortable encounters. But as a white-passing student of color (half white), it was easy to blend in and not be taken as a tourist—which is what I wanted to avoid.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad memorable?</h3>
<p>The obvious love of my host family and the care and contact from YFU while I was abroad.</p>
<p>I almost never got lonely and don’t remember being homesick. I was engaged in activities the entire time I was there and didn’t even realize how helpful the care and understanding from my host family—and the official check-ins—were to me.</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>With a couple of telephone calls, a planned and well-publicized regional meeting of exchange students in the state capital city, and face-to-face contact with a former exchange student who lived nearby.</p>
<p>That person offered me a one-on-one opportunity to socialize and ask questions. We just did normal teenager stuff in a semi-structured environment that made it easy to learn.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I would tell my younger self to push harder on my social awkwardness and make more friends outside my family and neighbors.</p>
<p>I was so happy to be around my family and take instruction from them in helping out around the house. I didn’t take the opportunity to make more friends from the school or neighborhood, but I think a little push to go another layer outside my comfort zone would have been that much more rewarding.</p>

<h3>What was your typical day like there?</h3>
<p>I would do my morning chores, join the family and staff of their store and bakery at breakfast, then help out in the bakery or store until lunch.</p>
<p>After lunch, I would take a walk or help out on errands or deliveries. Then, I would listen to the radio or read until dinner. After family dinner, we would watch soccer or a movie.</p>
<p>For part of my stay, I was in the same bedroom as their teenage daughter; for another part, I was in a spare bedroom in the attic.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time in Germany?</h3>
<p>I enjoyed speaking the language and asking questions. They made it so easy to be curious and not be ridiculed for bad grammar or misunderstandings.</p>
<p>My host family was very generous with their time and took me on several day trips around the region to see famous castles, festivals, churches, etc. I took a walk by myself in the countryside at least once a week and got to know the area well.</p>
<p>Since it was summer, we also went swimming and hiking. Mostly, these trips took place on Sundays or Saturdays after the half-day the family worked in their business, a small grocery store.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I was living in the family house, a typical country farmhouse over 250 years old, with the family of four. We also had bakery apprentices who sometimes stayed overnight.</p>
<p>I shared the daughter’s bedroom for part of my stay and had a spare room of my own for part of the time. I had my own bed. Upstairs, there was one bathroom with a shower shared by the family, and downstairs was a small bathroom with a toilet and sink.</p>
<p>We either ate at the table in the kitchen or at the table in the front room.</p>

<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Every future participant should know and be prepared for the amount of travel required to get to their host family.</p>
<p>You are not traveling directly to one destination; the group needs to take time to make sure everyone is assembled as you travel cross-country leaving the U.S., and that everyone disembarks in order of destination in the group country or region.</p>
<p>This includes all mass transit needed and waiting for drivers to arrive at the final train terminal. I traveled at least 24 hours each way, and then I was told I slept for almost 20 hours.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/youth-for-understanding rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Youth For Understanding (YFU)</ins></a> to others? Why?</h3>
<p>I would absolutely recommend YFU to any prospective high school student interested in traveling abroad and interested in cultural immersion.</p>
<p>Their support was hands-off and not intrusive. I never felt like they expected problems or that they were snooping, but I also knew they would be able to provide any support I needed.</p>
<p>This was in the days when long-distance phone calls were expensive, so we didn’t communicate every week. Their information before my trip was as comprehensive as my prospective host family was able to provide.</p>
<p>The program was very well-run. After my trip, I was inspired to become a volunteer at our local international airport to meet foreign students coming to the U.S.</p>
<h3>What do you feel is the biggest benefit of traveling abroad?</h3>
<p>I think the biggest benefit is firsthand experience.</p>
<p>Travel shows, books, magazines, and other media expose you to ideas, but having your own experience is irreplaceable. It helps you build self-confidence, self-awareness, and memories that keep bringing you benefits and understanding long after you get off the plane.</p>

<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>As mentioned above, the immersive contact with another culture and community brings so many gifts that you don’t even know about at the time.</p>
<p>I’ve used what I learned in 15 short weeks to develop those skills further and to interpret social interactions and world events differently than many of my peers.</p>
<p>My trip helped me develop an interest in social sciences and a curiosity about people around the world that I didn’t have before—not that broadly and deeply. At the same time, I also understood many things about the United States differently after I got back home.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel combines the goals of traveling without harming others, without prejudgment, and with the intent of expanding personal experience.</p>
<p>Within a safe environment, it means having the confidence to move out of your comfort zone and learn directly about other people and places—even to understand history and geography in a different way.</p>
<p>Meaningful travel is open to whatever you want it to be—and sometimes to what you don’t expect it to be. You’ll come away with unexpected gifts and memories.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>I love the French culture and the language, but I was having a hard time speaking it even after taking French class in school. I could read it fairly well, but actually hearing someone speak it to me—and then responding—was still something I found really difficult.</p>
<p>I quickly realized that learning a language in a classroom was not the same as actively trying to speak it on a daily basis.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose the <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/ouiconnect/programs/summer-break-host-family-abroad-196697 rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Summer Break Abroad with a Host Family</ins></a> program?</h3>
<p>I picked this program because I really liked that it was only three weeks and that it was full immersion. I was forced to adapt and integrate myself into the life of the family I was staying with, and I knew that would push me to improve—particularly my speaking skills.</p>
<p>It was out of my comfort zone, but in an exciting way.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Marseille, France?</h3>
<p>I loved the food, nature, and the architecture of the area. It was so beautiful and had so much history!</p>
<p>I also really loved that, in the French family, it was part of their culture to have long meals together, talking and catching up. They seemed much more disconnected from social media and TV than the U.S. typically seems.</p>

<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>How caring and excited my host family was to have me! They made me feel part of the family, and they were happy to show me around and proud of their culture and region.</p>
<p>They really wanted me to have a great time and to learn. I got to know their family and friends, and people were so happy to get to know me and learn about my culture as well.</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The few times I had a question, someone was available to speak with me and answer. I didn’t really need to contact my local staff much since it was a fairly straightforward program and I felt comfortable with the family I was placed with.</p>
<p>But I always felt that if I did need someone, there was someone available to calm my nerves and be a middleman if I had any concerns or questions.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had been even more confident in my language skills going in so that I could have gotten to know the family even better! But I guess that’s the purpose of the program—and if I get the opportunity to go back, I will definitely have a new level of confidence.</p>
<p>I also wish I had tried to speak even more than I did right away. Shaking any hesitation or shyness is so key to having a good experience abroad.</p>

<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>It was fairly slow-paced. Some days, we would hang out in the garden, and friends of the family would come over and we’d eat and chat.</p>
<p>Other days, we would visit different towns in the region, go to markets and cafés, and do some shopping. We always ate meals together, and they typically lasted longer than a typical meal in the U.S., which I really enjoyed.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>Visiting markets in different villages! I loved seeing the fresh produce being sold, and the handmade baskets and olive wood products. I bought many gifts for my family back home at those markets.</p>
<p>I also loved going to the boulangerie and picking out bread for the day and the yummy pâtisseries. The food was incredible.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I shared a room with a girl close in age to me. I had my own bed and closet space, and it was great.</p>
<p>I had so much fun with her in the evenings watching movies and TV shows she liked—and a lot of the time, they were the same shows my friends in the U.S. were into! Social media has definitely built a common ground on media and pop culture interests around the world.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>You have to be willing to put yourself out there. It wouldn’t have been a successful program if I hadn’t tried my best to speak and get to know the family.</p>
<p>Being overly shy would not be ideal for this program. You have to be willing to speak as much as possible and mess up sometimes. Try to open up as early as possible and get comfortable with your family—they want you there! So, act excited to be there too.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend your program to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Absolutely! I had the best experience ever and have made friends for life now in France.</p>
<p>I also have more confidence in my French speaking skills. I’m much quicker to understand what someone is saying in French now and can quickly put together my response. I also feel my accent improved a lot while in France.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>I think it’s realizing that not everyone lives and thinks exactly like you do—yet there are so many similarities at the same time.</p>
<p>Traveling reminds us that everyone is living such different experiences and that the world is a big place, while also helping us realize how much we all have in common. The more people you meet and get to know, the faster you realize we’re all just people on Earth together doing the best we can.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>I cannot wait to go back, and I also can’t wait to visit more places too! I want to get to know as many people from different cultures as I can.</p>
<p>I also love having new friends in France that I’ll always be connected to. I hope I can visit France again and meet up with them—or even have them come visit my home, meet my family, and see how we live.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel to me means really submersing yourself and getting to know an area and a culture well.</p>
<p>I loved that I had three full weeks in the South of France and really felt like I knew the routine and the area after my trip. I felt like I truly experienced their culture, rather than just observing it as a tourist—and it will always hold a special place in my heart.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>My mother went abroad with AFS when she was my age, and I grew up hearing stories and listening to her read me some children's books in Danish. I've always had a spark of wanderlust and an interest in language learning, so it was almost a given that I would follow in my mother's footsteps and do my own gap year abroad.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/afs-usa rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>AFS-USA</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>My family has had ties to AFS for decades, and it was a trusted program that me and my family felt comfortable with. We agreed with the organization's values and commitments and felt confident that the staff could handle my dietary needs (I have a severe allergy) to the level needed for me to participate comfortably in the program.</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Paraguay?</h3>
<p>I loved the food and the people! Lots of the meals I ate were homemade, and everyone I met was warm, and inviting, and never let me feel left out.</p>
<p>I had lots of classmates who were eager to share Paraguayan traditions and culture with me, which helped me immerse. My city had good transportation links to the capital, and it was easy to get around on my own.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>My host sister! She is similar in age to me, and we have a lot of shared interests such as language learning and reading. We spent lots of time together, she helped me a lot with questions about the Spanish language, and in turn, I helped her with her questions about the English language and grammar. She was a friend from day one!</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>Whenever I had questions, I knew I could always text or call my consejera, and she would help answer my questions and provide me with resources if needed. I had a difficult familial situation happen back home while on program, and support staff were in contact with me to share options if I needed to travel back.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had traveled in the country more. I did some traveling outside of Paraguay, and I definitely did travel within the country, but I wish I had explored more of the northern part of the country. It was a bit difficult to travel due to my program's rules, but I wish I had tried harder to find a way to do so.</p>

<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<ul>
<li>I would wake up around 7 am, and eat a bit of breakfast.</li>
<li>Head to school by 8 am.</li>
<li>I had classes most days until 12:30 pm, and then I would walk back home.</li>
<li>I would eat lunch, then have a siesta for an hour or two (which is traditional in my host country).</li>
<li>After the siesta, I would read, do homework, or help with chores/meals, depending on the day.</li>
<li>If my host sister didn't have too much of her own classwork to do, we'd watch a movie together sometimes.</li>
</ul>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I enjoyed hanging out with friends! I liked exploring the capital city and walking around to find interesting shops and sights, which gave me lots of opportunities to try new foods and buy souvenirs for myself and my family back home. I also hung out in some of the city's malls a lot, since they had lots of things to do, such as watching movies.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I lived with a host family, consisting of a mother and daughter; my favorite part of it was my host sister, who was my age and was in the same class as me for the first half of my program. She was a huge help to me while I was getting established in the country, including, including me in her friend group and introducing me to new people.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>The country is more conservative in terms of dress sense, but it's not uncommon to wear tank tops and shorts in the home to help combat the heat! I was worried I wouldn't be able to wear some of my clothing, but I was able to dress comfortably.</p>
<p>They should also know that Paraguay is bilingual and the indigenous language, Guaraní, is very common to hear across the country, especially used as slang.</p>

<h3>Would you recommend <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/afs-usa rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>AFS-USA</ins></a> to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes! AFS had lots of resources available to me and my sending contact was always happy to answer questions or get me in contact with returnees of my program if I wanted.</p>
<p>I felt supported while on the program and knew who my contacts were if I ever had issues. My local consejera checked in with me frequently and also answered questions via text as needed.</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Meeting new people and expanding your worldview. Meeting people from abroad showed me that there are so many cool traditions and cultures out there, and people love to share their lives with others! I loved making connections to countries that I haven't visited through stories of the people who have lived there.</p>
<p>Our world is only growing more interconnected, and especially now, it's more important than ever to take yourself outside of your comfort zone a bit to make these connections and memories.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>I ended up going to college abroad for my entire degree, which I also loved as a completely different experience to my exchange. I've been able to travel and meet up with friends that I met during my exchange, and have learned more about their home countries because of it. It has given me a love for travel and intercultural communication that I want to continue with for the rest of my life and help expose others to the same.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>To me, it means stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something that you wouldn't think of doing back home. It's acknowledging that there are differences between cultures, but keeping in mind that differences do not mean good or bad. It's making connections to the place you travel, whether that's through people, food, or experiences, and keeping that experience close to heart as a learning moment to take forward.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>I have a lot of family who live abroad, specifically one who goes to uni in Amsterdam. After being confined to my home for two years due to Covid-19 my family decided to visit my cousin in Amsterdam.</p>
<p>I fell in love with the city and I realized I wanted to travel more because there was so much about the world I had realized I didn't know. Then after attempting to do a semester abroad, I could not find programs that would allow my credits to transfer so that is when I came across the AFS summer program and from there I decided to try it out.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/afs-usa rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>AFS-USA</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>My options were between Denmark and France, but I had always wanted to visit the south of France because of the beaches and scenery so that one caught my eye. Also, I took French in school and felt that doing this program would not only give me an amazing experience socially, but it could help me improve in school.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about France?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about my host country/city was how much of the country I got to see. We were able to visit numerous cities in France, along with places in Italy and Monaco. I also have never seen beaches as beautiful as the ones I went to in France, so it was a nice experience since for so long I was confined to my home.</p>

<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>The independence made my experience extraordinary. Being allowed at only 15 to experience living alone and exploring other countries and cultures is something I will never forget. Even little things like the Friday night dances the campus would host every week made me get out of my shell and socialize more.</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>A lot of the local staff were close to our age, in their late teens or early twenties, hence I felt they were very easy to talk to. If there was ever drama between some of the students, or if for whatever reason you needed advice, they were always there to help. So in general they helped us a lot with easing into the experience and feeling comfortable.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>Nothing. I would have liked to participate in the AFS summer Denmark program as well because I have never been in that region so I don't know much about the culture.</p>
<p>I will say maybe in France it would be nice to have bonded with my roommates more because we didn't speak the same language. They spoke only French and I only spoke English so I could have used that to my advantage to work on my language skills.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>In the mornings I would wake up around 7 am and get ready before heading to the cafeteria to eat breakfast and drink my coffee. I would then head to class where I would learn French for about 1.5 hours.</p>
<p>Then, we would have a snack break and head back to class for another 1.5 hours. After we would all grab lunch at the cafeteria together.</p>
<p>From there we could leave campus but we had to be back before 8 pm. We could use this time to go to the beach, museums, restaurants, etc. Then we spent the rest of the night on campus.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I loved the beaches. The water was clear and nice. The walk to the beach was very hard because it was so hot and we had to go up and down a hill, but once you were there the beaches were worth it.</p>
<p>There were a few we had options of visiting but I had a favorite, which actually was ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, I think.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>We had dorms with anywhere from 2-3 other roommates. My favorite thing about dorms is how easy it is to visit my friends. We would all gather in one person's room a lot where we would just hang out and talk, it was very nice. Instead of being alone in your room, it was so easy to socialize and I made a lot of memories.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>They should not go in with high expectations. While it is a summer program it is not just a vacation. A lot of students didn't realize this, I guess, and so, when there were responsibilities, such as waking up for class, many found it annoying. Also, it is a campus so you are not getting home-cooked meals, it is cafeteria food which many students did not like, but I didn't mind it.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/afs-usa rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>AFS-USA</ins></a> to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes. It is such an amazing experience for people of such a young age to have. If one is introverted, having a study abroad trip helps a lot to make students more extroverted and develop good communication skills.</p>
<p>This is a really important feature in life, as it can help with jobs and things like that, so for that I would recommend it. But also you make life-long memories.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Being more mature and culturally aware is a benefit of traveling abroad. You are less close-minded once you know what other parts of the world are like.</p>
<p>Especially being American there is a stereotype that we are stuck up and are not educated about other countries, so going abroad I felt like I was overcoming these stereotypes.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>It massively impacted my life as it is what led me to move out at the age of 16 to live in Costa Rica where I am now finishing my last two years of high school.</p>
<p>It made leaving home less intimidating since I somewhat knew what to expect and I already felt I could take care of myself since I had lived abroad when I was 15.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>For me, meaningful travel is traveling for the experience of learning about new cultures, trying new foods, and meeting new people. I think if one travels for the sole purpose of shopping or getting Insta pics, it becomes less genuine and loses meaning. You want to come home from travels having experienced a whole other lifestyle and having made many more memories.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>Derek Tano, co-owner of World Class Programs, was a past teacher of mine and the previous head coach of the speech team at my school. He is an exceptional teacher and coach, and introduced me to the experience!</p>
<p>While I did not need much convincing—I have always wanted to travel and my mom traveled to Italy when she was my age—Mr. Tano made the decision super easy with the offer of his amazing program!</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/world-class-programs rel="" target="_self" className="link"><ins>World Class Programs</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>I have always wanted to travel to Italy, and the programs offered there were the most appealing to me!</p>
<p>I have a big passion for history and I love learning about art and the history of it, so the art history class was perfect for me. The philosophy class was also an interest of mine, and both classes on the trip were amazing.</p>

<h3>What was your favorite part about Italy?</h3>
<p>The vibrant culture of Italy was incredible. The food we ate everywhere we went was absolutely amazing, and all of the activities we got to do were incredible as well.</p>
<p>Everything about the city of Florence is breathtaking—being able to experience a new, regular life in a place so different from my own home was so eye-opening. Learning about the vibrant history and culture of Italy was easily the best part of the entire experience.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>The classes and the activities! The art history class consisted mainly of lectures and exploring churches and museums around Florence, which are the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen.</p>
<p>Outside of classes, we did a wide variety of activities, such as climbing the clocktower and Florence's Duomo (Cathedral), exploring Florence and trying new and exciting foods, and going to other cities in Italy on the weekends and for day trips.</p>
<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The staff were always there for each and every one of us, every moment on the program! Every adult on the trip was always kind, helpful, and fun to be around.</p>
<p>They were knowledgeable about everything from our classes to the city of Florence; and helped us on every step of the way, from registering for the program, to helping us navigate the new places we were in.</p>
<p>When any of us were sad or homesick, the staff was there for emotional support. They were amazing at keeping everyone timely and organized, while still having fun!</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I would have had a better idea of what clothes to bring for where I was. Many of the churches required me to wear long skirts and cover my shoulders, and I was not 100% ready for that. I also did not bring enough warm clothes for the chilly nights. If I could re-do my experience, the only thing I would do differently would be changing up my wardrobe a bit!</p>

<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>We always woke up at a reasonable time, around 8 - 9 A.M. We would have around an hour to get ready, and then we would be off for our art history class.</p>
<p>We would usually stop for a quick breakfast on the way, and then we would go to a church or museum until around noon. We would have a one-to-two hour lunch break to explore the city or rest, then we would come together for an afternoon activity.</p>
<p>After that, we would either stop at a grocery store or go to a new restaurant for dinner, and wind down the night with some gelato!</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I loved exploring the city of Florence and going shopping! During a majority of my free time, myself and two of my friends would explore the city and window shop all of the designer and locally-owned stores. I was able to purchase some amazing handmade goods from vendors in Florence, as well as a designer item.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>Myself and the nine other girls on the trip stayed in the apartments that New York University students stay in when they study abroad.</p>
<p>It was a very nice apartment, with plenty of space for all of us and a lovely kitchen that we were able to use. It was air-conditioned, so it was a nice break from the very hot Florence summer outside. It featured four bathrooms, so no one was ever mad at someone else for taking too much time in the restroom!</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Knowing what to bring is KEY! Asking an alumni or the program directors directly what to bring will be very important. Knowing what clothes, shoes, and kinds of bags to bring is essential. Also, make sure that you figure out a good money situation! Having a plan for exchanging cash or getting a card before you leave the country is best.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend World Class Programs to others? Why?</h3>
<p>100% yes! It was an amazing experience overall and I could not say enough good things about it. I had almost no negative experiences for the entire nineteen days, and even the travel to get there and home wasn't difficult.</p>
<p>After the Covid pandemic, getting away from home and seeing a new culture was amazing. It is also a great way to prepare students for college if they are planning to go away from home!</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Experiencing a new culture and way of life that is different from your own. Learning the new customs and culture of a country is incredibly important, and seeing a place that is different from your own is incredible.</p>
<p>I also believe that it is very important to learn how to be independent before you are an adult (or before you are done with high school). Traveling abroad in high school is the perfect way to achieve this.</p>
<h3>Did your program provide specific pre-departure Covid support? If yes, tell us what kind of support you received.</h3>
<p>Yes, all of us who went on the trip were vaccinated and were required to have a negative Covid test. The staff provided resources for us to find somewhere to get tested or where to find at-home tests, and we were all able to submit a negative Covid test before the trip.</p>
<p>The World Class Programs portal also made it very easy to submit your vaccination status/card and negative test.</p>
<h3>How did your program help you stay (and feel) safe abroad amidst the ongoing pandemic?</h3>
<p>Yes! We were required to always travel in groups of at least three, and most of the time we were with an adult. We also wore masks at all times, as required by Italy and the program.</p>
<p>I felt safe at all times, and no one in the group had a negative or unsafe encounter on the trip. We also stayed very Covid safe, as no one contracted Covid during the trip or when they got home!</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>It has made me compare the cultures of my home and the place I studied. I do miss the experience, but everything I took away from it was so amazing!</p>
<p>I am now able to recommend the program to others, and take my knowledge home. The only downside is that I miss authentic Italian food so much—nothing at home is like it!</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>The people I know who travel the most know so much more than those who don't, and arguably I think that people who travel more are more intelligent than those who don't. Learning about new places and new cultures allows us to be more knowledgeable about all things. It also makes people more personable, and more friendly if they know about different cultures and how different people interact</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3><p>My mother traveled abroad in high school and felt this would be a great experience for me to immerse myself in the Spanish language and experience being away from home and meeting new people. She also hosted a young girl from France when she was young and said she remembers what a great experience it was and how life changing it was. It also gave me a chance to leave my school and see how another school was in another country. She found out that they were still doing abroad programs. After my parents talked with Davine and Celine from Nacel, they made it feel very safe and comfortable to move forward with the program. They were always so helpful and responsive to my parents. It is my junior year at school and a month was really the most time I could be away without a big impact on my grades. My school was very supportive about going and having this experience. When I came back they worked out my grades and I made up any work that I missed. I did work while I was there, too.</p><h3>What was your favorite part about Spain?</h3><p>Spain is beautiful! My host family took me around to many wonderful places to see. I saw many churches and museums. We went to the beach and local restaurants. Spain is so big that there are so many places to see and visit. I can't wait to go back soon. I also want to possibly go to college to take a semester and study abroad. I never realized how many mountains were in Spain. When I was there it wasn't very warm but still nice to walk around. It rained a lot! That did not stop us from seeing so many great places.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3><p>My host family made it the best experience! They were in the airport waiting for me. They were so welcoming and kind to me. They took the time to show me how they lived. My host mom was so great she would send pictures home to my family and let them know I was doing great! They included me in all their daily activities and introduced me to their family and friends. My host mom helped me with my uniform and made sure I was comfortable and respected in the house. I also had one visit from the Nacel coordinator to check in on me. Everyone was so kind and open to me coming. My host family was amazing and the kids at the school were very friendly to me. The teachers helped the best they could with showing me what they studied in Spain. They allowed me to try new things in the classroom, and helped me with my Spanish. I was the first American student in a really long time to be in the school. So the students were super excited to talk to me and learn English!</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3><p>Nothing I loved everything! Maybe stay longer. By staying longer, I could have really learned so much more about the language. If I stayed longer, I would have been able to really be involved with the classes and studies at the school and had my grades transfer back to the United States. But since I was there only a month, they did not. When I was there I worked on studies from back at home and my teachers and I kept in touch about things that they were doing and any work that I was able to do in Spain I did.</p><h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3><p>I would get up and my host mom would drive us to school. We would come home in the afternoon and have a late lunch. Then I would hang out with the family and have a late dinner with everyone. I was not used to eating at the times they did, but I was okay with it all and trying new foods. I was able to talk with my family back home, too. My host family made me feel very much a part of the family and included me in everything. I felt like it was very relaxed. They brought me to my friend's house and places with my host sister.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3><p>I loved hanging out with the new friends I made. They brought me to clubs and restaurants. Things are very different than here. It was very exciting for me. I liked seeing the different places where kids my age hung out. Trying new places to eat and see. I watched my host sister play her sport. They brought me to their extended family events too. At dinner we sat around talking a lot and laughing. I really enjoyed that. My host family took me to their favorite places on the weekends and when they had time off.</p><h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>I had great accommodations! I lived in a house with my host family. It was so nice. I had my own room. It was in a nice area. We were close to the water. I liked that they gave me my space and privacy when needed. They treated me like one of the family. They were very relaxed and funny too! I had two host sisters. They helped me when needed. We all respected our personal space. They had a friendly dog too. I felt like I fit right in with the family.</p><h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3><p>Everyone should know that it is normal to be super nervous! I was. I was so surprised with myself that I was going to leave my home and live with people that I never met! I never traveled alone and I did it all by myself! I had to stop in Madrid and get another flight to Gijon. That was a little challenging getting through an airport that big and by myself. It is important to know that the people hosting really want to make your time with them special and enjoyable! They want to share their culture and way of living with you. Why?</h3><p>I would definitely recommend my immersion homestay program to high school students. I know the people were helpful at Nacel. My mom felt very comfortable sending me. I can't wait to go back and would recommend to anyone if they had the chance to travel and experience a different country and culture, they should. Being out of my school for a month was amazing! I got to see how other kids learned and interacted somewhere totally different than where I lived. The program was great. They answered all of my parents' questions.</p><h3>What do you feel is the biggest benefit of traveling abroad?</h3><p>I feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is learning about a new culture and meeting new people. I was so nervous about going and I feel I accomplished so much by going there by myself. I gained so much confidence. I also made lifelong friends with my new family. We became so close that we have made plans to see each other this summer! It makes me want to travel more and try new things. I have so many wonderful memories and I still sometimes think I can't believe I went and lived in Spain with a family I never met!</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>I was so sad to leave and I am so much better with my Spanish and really have a great feeling about traveling abroad. I did not want to come home and I really enjoyed my new family and the lifestyle they had. It was nice to be with new people. I am from a very small town and school, so this was a big deal to experience this. I also feel so much more confident with myself. I feel after traveling alone, I can do a lot of things. College doesn&rsquo;t seem scary anymore!</p><h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3><p>Meaningful travel means to be with great people, in a safe environment. To go to places that I have never seen before, try new foods and be open to new things. There are so many places to visit in this world. There are good people in the world that want to enjoy life and share it. Whenever an opportunity comes up you should take it! My family loves to travel and this has inspired my siblings to want to travel abroad too. My sister has gone abroad with her school as a school trip. I was the first one to live for a time away from home.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?&nbsp;</h3><p>I love to travel and experience other cultures. I have traveled to the Philippines to see my family and experience Filipino culture. I used to live in Taiwan, so why not go to another Asian country with different beliefs and cultures.&nbsp;</p><h3>Why did you choose <a href="https://www.goabroad.com/providers/the-experiment-in-international-living/programs/thailand-buddhist-traditions-thai-culture-111092" title="" data-contentlink="87964">Thailand: From Ancient Temples to Bangkok</a>?</h3><p>I hesitated and changed my choices of countries so many times and Thailand was my 3rd choice. I was flexible with whatever the program placed me. However, the reason why I chose Thailand as one of my top three choices is because of the community service portion. Either by blood or by generations of friendship. There were two parts that were my favorite. On the last night of the homestay, every family would light up lanterns and send them off to the sky. This symbolized the last day and that no matter how far apart we are, we will always be together. My second favorite part was when my family took me to a gorgeous cafe outside of the village. They wanted to do this to celebrate and bond with me. I appreciated their efforts in bonding with a foreign family member like me.&nbsp;</p><h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?&nbsp;</h3><p>The moments of bonding with my group members made my experience extraordinary. In the span of one month, they were my second family from completely different states.&nbsp;</p><h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?&nbsp;</h3><p>They helped us transition and connect with locals when we began. Throughout the program, our program coordinator became our friend and it felt as though we were one big family.&nbsp;</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?&nbsp;</h3><p>One thing I would have done differently was created stable plans for free time. It contained an air conditioner and the housekeepers gave us water every day. The hotel was close to everything that was in our itinerary.&nbsp;</p><h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?&nbsp;</h3><p>Be open to try new things and don't complain if something isn't fun. Acknowledge it and discuss it with the group leaders, but overall, just have fun and experience everything as much as you can.&nbsp;</p><h3>Would you recommend <a href="https://www.goabroad.com/providers/the-experiment-in-international-living/programs/thailand-buddhist-traditions-thai-culture-111092" title="" data-contentlink="87965">Thailand: From Ancient Temples to Bangkok</a> to others? Even when I looked through my pictures it wasn't the same as experiencing it in real life.&nbsp;</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?&nbsp;</h3><p>It has made me grateful for the things I have in America and how accessible things are at home.&nbsp;</p><h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?&nbsp;</h3><p>I think it means traveling not to destress on a vacation. Meaningful travel involves an emotional attachment to a specific day, memory, or experience from something that only comes from that country.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I went to Costa Rica last year with SPI for two weeks and I knew I wanted to help the world and improve my Spanish.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/global-works rel="" target="_self" class="link">Global Works - Travel with Purpose</a>?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I liked how they were focused on a specific mission and they take equal time for each trip to certify its safety. They have a lot of options and something for everyone.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part of Spain?</h3>
<p>My favorite part of Spain was a little village outside of Palencia called Amayuelas. It was very community-based and you got to know the people who lived there. My favorite memory was playing soccer with my host family. It showed me that you don't have to speak the language to communicate.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>You could physically see the impact you made when you did community service. In Costa Rica, we helped a family with their home. We made a concrete floor, painted their house, and stained the wood on the windowsills. While I was in Spain, I got to clean out a river of over 300 plastic bottles, I pulled out invasive species from an area. In both situations, we were able to see what we have done. In Costa Rica, it was smiling, appreciative faces and a newly painted house. In Spain, it was a pile of plastic and a pile of weeds. I could see what I was doing was helping the world, even if it was just putting a smile on someone's face. There was also a great balance of different things, city time, group conversations, and cultural immersion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They were incredibly helpful. I always felt emotionally and physically safe. I could ask them any questions about the area or a Spanish translation. If they didn't know the answer they would find out and get back to me</p>

<p>It depended on the place we were in as we traveled around the country. In Amayuelas, we woke up, had breakfast with everyone, split up into teams for the farm work or housework, met up to stack wood, had lunch together, had an hour or two for a nap, then split up again to learn a skill (bread-making or calligraphy),  and lastly we had dinner and some free time before heading off to bed.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I enjoyed making friendship bracelets, talk about school, singing songs, and playing group games.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Did you notice a development in your Spanish? Explain.</h3>
<p>Yes, I felt that I was able to understand things quicker and form sentences quicker as well. It was helpful when the people I talked to understood I was learning and there were times where people started talking slower so I was able to understand.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Mostly hostels in the city, a homestay when in Valencia, and a guest house in Amauyelas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Having your phone taken away is the best part of this program. They still give you their numbers in case you get lost in the city, but it is very unlikely because they are very clear with their instructions and maps are issued whenever you walk the city alone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yes, you get to experience so much in 3 weeks, the cultural immersion, the use of the language, and my favorite part, the community service.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Meeting so many different people and being able to talk and connect with them.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>It has given me more leadership skills and made me more comfortable in a big city.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What would you say to a student who was deciding between this program and another?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I would tell them to have a clear idea of what you want to do when you study abroad. For me, I was very specific, I wanted to improve my Spanish and do community service. If you have a passion for a particular aspect of travel, find a program that caters to your passion.</p>
<h3>If you could go back for one day, what would you do?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>I would visit my host family and show them how much I have grown. Show them that they made a positive impact on my life and continue to do so.</p>

The sight was simply indescribable and I loved every moment of being there.&nbsp;</p><h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?&nbsp;</h3><p>On this trip, I truly met so many great friends. Travel For Teens groups the programs by age and focuses on group positivity. No matter where we went or how the day was going, we learned to look for the upside and embrace the culture we were experiencing. And on top of that, we got to spend the time witnessing some of the most breathtaking cities.&nbsp;</p><h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?&nbsp;</h3><p>Our trip leaders were very helpful. They made sure we had a fun and safe time wherever we were visiting. Even back at the hotels they were very accommodating and helped us get settled. TFT also knew locals in the cities we visited, so it was nice to have a secured local friend to ask about the city.&nbsp;</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?&nbsp;</h3><p>I wish I would have focused more on the smaller cities. Hidden neighborhoods are truly the most authentic part of traveling and I wish we could have spent more time in the small places with local shops and activities.&nbsp;</p><h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.&nbsp;</h3><p>After having breakfast at our hotel, we&rsquo;d head out to our first location for the day. This was usually around 8:00-9:00 a.m. This location would have been a monument or museum. After visiting those places we&rsquo;d break into smaller groups around a neighborhood for some lunch and exploring. I typically picked up a few souvenirs at that time. Then we&rsquo;d meet up again and head off to some more fun locations to explore. We did a lot of walking. Later on we&rsquo;d head out to dinner, and maybe grab a gelato treat on the way home. It really depends on the trip and location, but this is the basic daily format.&nbsp;</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?&nbsp;</h3><p>I loved shopping in small neighborhoods and taking photos with my friends. I also liked to talk to locals in shops a bit when we went exploring. We fortunately had lots of time to do this.&nbsp;</p><h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?&nbsp;</h3><p>We stayed in beautiful, family-run hotels. They were all clean and well managed. Typically travelers would stay in groups of two or three in hotel rooms. I liked that me and my roommates got to chill in the evenings and mornings and have a good time in the hotel when we weren&rsquo;t out exploring. There were many instruments and creative things we could do in the common areas and always a beautiful view from our windows.&nbsp;</p><h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3><p>It&rsquo;s important to pack only what you need and plan outfits, shoes, and other needs beforehand. It keeps you prepared so you can focus on your travels. Also, try to go into your program with an open mind. You&rsquo;ll enjoy yourself more.&nbsp;</p><h3>Would you recommend <a href="https://www.goabroad.com/providers/travel-for-teens" title="" data-contentlink="80418">Travel For Teens</a> to others? Why?&nbsp;</h3><p>Absolutely. Being on this trip made me never want to leave. Traveling really opens your eyes to other cultures and points of view. Not to mention all the fun you&rsquo;ll have with your new best friends.&nbsp;</p><h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?&nbsp;</h3><p>Like I mentioned before, traveling opens your eyes to the world. There is so much to see and learn from the world, so why would you stay at home?</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?&nbsp;</h3><p>For months after I came home, the feeling of optimism stayed with me. I felt more excited to learn about things in my everyday life. I also learned that I want to see so much more of the world in my adulthood, and I still have more to see.&nbsp;</p><h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?&nbsp;</h3><p>Meaningful travel means that you learned about a different place and you felt inspired by it. Not only did you learn of architecture and history, but of the difference between your surroundings growing up and the lives of people around the world. It&rsquo;s traveling that means something to you.</p>

I also had a challenging moment in Costa Rica when we were hiking straight up a mountain to go ziplining. I was really struggling to get up and so I sat down to rest for a minute. While I was sitting, I felt a surge of strength and shot up to finish the climb. For example, we painted barrels for recycling in the community and we also did a big beach clean-up. Then, we would come back to our base where the locals made lunch for us and eat. After lunch, we would have quick lessons from the other girls about the sea turtles and Costa Rica. We would then have some more free time to just do whatever we wanted.</p><p>Before dinner everyday, we would go down to the beach and watch the sunset. Later, we would make dinner and have a really good time. After we washed our dishes, we would hang out at the tables and just talk to our friends. Then we had our nightly meetings where we talked about our day and we did do night patrols sometimes after the meeting. Then the day was over.&nbsp;</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?&nbsp;</h3><p>In my free time, I liked to write poems or journal about what we were doing so that I could remember it when I got home. What did you like best about it?&nbsp;</h3><p>So we had two places that we stayed, the first being the Outward Bound Costa Rica base and the second being a base on the coast. At the Outward Bound base, we had bunks, blankets, and indoor bathrooms. At the coast base, we slept in tents of three with mats, sheets, and outdoor bathrooms. I was actually pretty happy with both accommodation situations.&nbsp;</p><h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about Outward Bound Costa Rica before their program begins?&nbsp;</h3><p>Before going on one of these programs, I want others to know that you can't use bug spray around sea turtles, so bring some clothes with long sleeves.&nbsp;</p><h3>Would you recommend Outward Bound Costa Rica to others? Also, all of us on the trip started a group chat so that we can talk. On my trip, I learned that there is such a thing as working too hard. I also learned that there is no end to people's kindness even if you might test or push them a lot.</p><h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?&nbsp;</h3><p>In my opinion, a traveler is going to do business or a mission trip while a tourist is going somewhere for enjoyment and relaxation or a break from work. Travel is made meaningful by the experiences you have, the people that you meet, and the differences you make in your life and the lives of others.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>BEST DECISION EVER. I knew I always wanted to travel, but I did not know how it was going to be accomplished until I came across the University of Dallas's Shakespeare in Italy program. I was a senior in high school at this point in time and was looking for a college to attend in the coming Fall. I did not intend to find UD's summer program, but I am so grateful that I did.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto2-mirandalozano-1537838730.jpg" alt="Selfie of two women on bus"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Departing from America with my roommate, Panda!</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><p>I began to do research on the program itself and fell in love with the opportunity and the layout of the trip. I watched youtube videos and called the school until the only thing left to do was tell my parents. They were unable to help me finance the trip so I did it all on my own. I got myself a full-time job and babysat on the side. I had more than enough money to cover the cost in the span of five months. Going abroad and traveling is just a part of me and one of the easiest decisions I've ever made. You will not regret any bit of it.</p><h3>Why did you choose the University of Dallas Shakespeare Program in Italy?</h3><p>I chose Shakespeare in Italy because I know that I personally excel in literature and writing. I also wanted to challenge myself with the great author and playwright himself, Shakespeare. It also would be an amazing opportunity to prepare for my college classes and meet three of UD's finest professors.</p><p>To be honest I would not have cared what we were studying as long as I was abroad. I had the time of my life. It was the perfect homework/class-load over the span of time we had. Balancing travel and studying during this program was not difficult.</p><h3>What was your favorite part about Rome, Italy?</h3><p>There is so much history in Rome that there is no time to be succumbed by boredom. Every corner I turned I was in awe, whether it was the narrow streets leading to the Vatican, the piazzas filled with scores of people from different cultures, or ancient buildings ready to tell me a story.</p><p>Another city we visited was Padua. Padua is like a college town in some aspects and had its own unique vibes. There were more young people since the University of Padua is right there and the town at night is so fun for staying out late.</p><p>The other city we visited was Venice. Venice was my favorite city and still is to this day. This city is so unique as well. It's definitely more touristy, but I enjoyed exploring the places and streets where people do not normally go. The water is an important part that makes Venice, Venice. There is so much history to this city as well that I think will surprise you. I felt like I was on an island full of happy, bustling people. The sunsets are beautiful and the gelato is endless. I loved absolutely everything about this country.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3><p>My experience was unique because my Shakespeare in Italy program brought along their prestigious drama professor. I had the opportunity to act out a scene from Shakespeare's the Merchant of Venice in the ghetto of Venice. All of my professor&rsquo;s passion for the subject and love for the cities we traveled to made this experience so fun and entertaining. I had my own built in tour guides that were willing to go off the map and show us the uniqueness of these ancient cities.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3><p>The staff was amazing! They are just as excited as you are to send you abroad and they are willing to help you in whatever this may entail. Everyone is so sweet and excited for you to experience something that not very many people get to do before they are 20. The staff truly cares, which is something I cannot say about any other program. Stand out and study abroad!</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>I wish I had taken a polaroid camera with me or a real camera rather than my phone to document everything I wanted to. I also wish I wasn't super paranoid about fitting into the Italian culture when it came to clothing because I would have been more comfortable while traveling.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto1-mirandalozano-1537838793.jpg" alt="Group of friends in front of Piazza Navona"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Piazza Navona with friends!!</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>A typical day would entail us waking up around 7:00 a.m. to make it to the Mensa to eat breakfast with friends. After, we would walk to class and spend that morning prepping for all of the sights we were going to see. We had class for about two to four hours with breaks in between.</p><p>We then would eat lunch, and if we had an excursion into Rome that day we would do that. We also had opportunities on certain days to meet in groups with our "tutors" (UD grad students in Literary Traditions) and talk about what we were reading.</p><p>We had plenty of free time where we either did laundry, hung out in the common area, slept, studied, took a walk in the vineyard, swam, played sports, or went to the chapel. After, we all came together, if we weren't already, and ate dinner.</p><p>The days varied because on travel days to other cities we did not have class. In addition, whenever we would get back early from Rome, we might have class in the evening. It was very flexible and easy-going. We kept up with the readings on our own, but there was an entire week that nothing was due, and a few days in a row that I didn't even touch a book.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3><p>In my free time I enjoyed playing soccer with friends on campus, taking a walk through the vineyard, or exploring the city with gelato or pizza in hand. I loved watching Italian sunsets and staying up late talking with my roommates and suite-mates.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>Due Santi is a beautiful campus overlooking a small town and a few miles away from the Pope's summer villa. I was on the second floor with three roommates and three suite-mates. My room was small, but it was the perfect size. I had a big window that allowed natural sun to come in and provided me with a view of the rolling hills of Italy.</p><p>The Hall that we slept in opened up to a common area that was surrounded by every room (think of a big giant cube and in the middle was the common area). Everyone got really close and I enjoyed the social aspect of the campus. There is a vineyard in the front as well as a cafeteria with local Italians who cook meals for you. Everyone becomes friends with the cooks!</p><p>There is also a library, a phone booth, computers, and two classrooms. There is a soccer field, a pool, tennis court and basketball court, as well as an on campus Church. In addition, there is an outside section where you can eat and even a grill area (which can be rented out by UD students during their semester abroad).</p><p>There is an on-campus laundry room where I spent some nights reading and Skyped friends back home. There is a balcony that is really nice to read on and watch the sunset. I found myself on the balcony a lot and I treasured those moments of serenity.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>The meat that is prepared by the cooks is "mystery meat"&mdash;we never know what it was. The campus is gluten-free/vegan friendly, it's not gourmet food but there will be food provided for you. Be open to meeting new people!</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>I catch myself escaping to serene places in my mind that I can remember. I miss everything about Italy, it feels like a dream&mdash;a dream I do not want to wake up from, but always do. I have a better perspective of the world now, my boundaries and scopes have been broadened, and I cannot wait for the time I can broaden my boundaries even more.</p><p>I miss it so much. Traveling will never be a waste of money or time. It hit me from the moment I stepped into the Italian airport&mdash;different cultures were represented everywhere, people from Africa, Saudi Arabia, China. I want to be surrounded by that and never lose that perspective. Challenge yourself and go.</p><p><span style="color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 21px; font-weight: bold;">Would you recommend University of Dallas programs to others? Why?</span><br></p><p>YES! A THOUSAND TIMES YES! Even if you do not want to study Shakespeare, go. Just go. You will have so much fun and the professors are amazing. The University of Dallas also offers a scholarship for participants who attend and choose to get their Bachelors degree at UD.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>I've always had a passion for traveling and dreamed about going overseas. Last winter I was planning out my summer and stumbled upon TFT and immediately knew that I wanted to spend my summer traveling with them.</p><h3>Why did you choose Travel For Teens?</h3><p>I chose TFT because out of all the travel companies I researched, none compared to TFT. My favorite part about the host countries was staying in the hostels. I gained so much knowledge on what it is like to be a true traveler because we stayed in hostels, not hotels. I got to experience what it's truly like to be a traveler not a tourist.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3><p>As I said above, staying in hostels made my experience unique. But so did the guides. TFT has the most positive and energetic travel guides and they made me feel safe and confident to explore on my own.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3><p>The staff were so helpful and supportive!</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>I wish I had looked at the weather for my locations and packed better. I did not realize how hot Italy gets in the summer!</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>Everyday was so different, but there was never a dull moment. The guides were so flexible, we'd do so many different activities in one day. We would explore and go shopping.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>The accommodations were perfect, like I said above. It was something I had never experienced before and I loved it. All the hostels and hotels were great quality.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>Definitely try to reach out and contact some of the people on the trip before you go, it's nice to meet before if you're going alone.</p><h3>What was the hardest part about going on an immersion trip abroad?</h3><p>The most daunting part about going on an immersion trip abroad was that I was going alone. I went to a place that I had never been to before, with people I had never met. It was intimidating but at the same time I loved it because I love pushing myself outside of my comfort zone.</p><h3>What surprised you most about Europe?</h3><p>I was most surprised by the fact that I could jump on a train and within a few hours, I was in a completely different landscape. I went from a small fishing village in Italy, to the mountains of Switzerland, to the metropolitan city of Paris, France.</p><h3>How difficult was it to communicate with locals?</h3><p>I went to three countries which the native language is not English. I was surprised by how many natives were bilingual and spoke very strong English, and they were all so friendly. Many of them recognized that my friends and I were foreigners and taught us cultural norms so that we didn&rsquo;t stick out as tourists as much. It was awesome!</p><h3>If you could go abroad again, where would you go?</h3><p>A week from today, I am traveling to Spain and Morocco! When you travel you get to experience what life is like for other people, and they share their country with you, I think it&rsquo;s a beautiful thing.</p><h3>Do you have any packing tips for individuals headed to Europe?</h3><p>Look at the weather for your location and pack accordingly! Also make sure you invest in some comfortable walking shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking.</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>I think about my trip all the time and it has inspired me to travel as much as I can. I have met friends for life and feel I am a more worldly and cultured person.</p><h3>Would you recommend Travel For Teens to others? Why?</h3><p>Absolutely! If anyone is thinking about going abroad I recommend traveling with TFT because they know what they're doing. My trip was the experience of a lifetime.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>I've never traveled out of North America and really wanted to see new places in the world with new people.</p><h3>Why did you choose Travel For Teens?</h3><p>The itinerary looked super fun and after researching the company more I discovered that they're a safe and trusted company.</p><h3>What was your favorite part the countries you traveled to?</h3><p>I went to Rome and Sorrento in Italy, and Lefkada and Athens in Greece. I don't think I have a favorite because they were all so cool for different reasons. It of course was intimidating initially, but being able to create new experiences with new people is in a way better than with old friends, because you have no preconceived conceptions of what you think your travel buddies might be like/what to expect. You're all adapting to the surroundings and each other on the fly and it's super cool.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3><p>They were amazing. They were at the age (25/26ish) that they were old enough so you respected and trusted them, but young enough for you to relate to and not feel like you were getting bossed around by cranky adults. They became huge role models and almost like an older brother/sister influence to me.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>Hmmmm. I don't know honestly. Maybe try more different foods. Being with kids my age made it so much better. I guess the only thing is that I wish we were given more freedom, almost half of us were 18 at the time.</p><h3>What surprised you most about Europe?</h3><p>How good their food and water is. Actually. Most knew English, and if they didn't, we used google translate. You can never have enough pairs of shorts.</p><h3>If you could go abroad again, where would you go?</h3><p>So many places. Off the top of my head: Spain, Iceland, Nicaragua, Cuba, Brazil, South Africa, Argentina, Bora Bora, Australia, Vietnam, Fiji, Japan, Thailand, England, France, and India.</p><h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of going on a high school program abroad is?</h3><p>Being able to experience new and beautiful things with new and beautiful people.</p><h3>Do you have any packing tips for individuals headed to Europe?</h3><p>Bring good walking shoes, you walk on average 6-8 miles a day. Get disposable cameras (for the mems), pack a lot of outfits in ziplock bags so your suitcase doesn't explode, get tide magic stain eraser and wrinkle remover spray, and sunglasses.</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>I wish I could go back. It widened my perspective on life and cultures and ways of living. I am so grateful I got this opportunity. It for sure will make going to college easier, because now I know I'm a quick adapter and am good with new people in new places.</p><h3>Would you recommend Travel For Teens to others? Why?</h3><p>Yes yes yes yes yes. It helps you grow so much as a person and it is the best two weeks of your life. Do it.</p>

<p>I have always loved traveling and learning about new people and cultures. I have traveled with this company before and had an amazing experience so when I heard about the program to Thailand to work with elephants, I couldn't pass it up.</p>

<p>I choose Thailand because I enjoy working with animals and I had never been anywhere near Thailand. I quickly became interested in the rich culture and history of the beautiful country.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Thailand?</h3>
<p>In this specific program, we traveled to several different cities throughout Thailand, but what I loved most is the culture and tradition. I like learning when I travel to new places and I was able to learn so much in Thailand! My favorite city we traveled to was probably Pai which is where we stayed for a few nights before we went on a 2 day rafting trip down the Pai River. I learned about the relations between Thailand and its neighboring counties. It was really interesting to learn how different countries interact.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3>
<p>As I said before, this isn't my first trip with Travel for Teens and what I think makes their trips unique is that in three weeks, we were able to see most of Thailand and meet amazing people from all over the world. I was able to check everything off my list and more while still making life long friendships and giving back to the community.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>For this trip, we traveled with three counselors and they were there for us if we were sick and they were with us everyday to show us around. They organized all of our reservations and activities. Because we were with our counselors everyday, we got to know them and hear about their experiences traveling too.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3>
<p>Personally, I wish that there would have been more time for service. We only spent about 4 days doing service and I understand that it would be difficult to add more service because it would take time away from other activities, but I really enjoyed the few days we did have and wished I could have done more!</p>
<h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3>
<p>It’s hard to say what an average day looks like because we did something new each day. The first week, roughly, was working with the elephants and in Chiang Mai, the second was spent on the islands, and the third was in Bangkok. Throughout the trip we also had a two-day rafting trip and temples from all over Thailand. Some of my favorite activities were seeing the famous Muy Thai boxing, learning how to cook authentic pad thai, scuba diving, and competitive scavenger hunts!</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3>
<p>We stayed busy for the most part, most of our days were planned from sunup to sundown. We had the most free time when we were on the islands. We were able to go hang out on the beach or do scavenger hunts that our counselors set up. Other times we would go the markets and shop or walk around the town and try out local street vendors.</p>
<h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>Our accommodations were very nice, we stayed in hotels for the majority of the trip and stayed in dormitories in the beginning while doing service. They were always nice, and they always made sure that there were vegetarian options for me.</p>

<h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3>
<p>The best way to prepare for these trips is to read the itinerary and pack smart. Many of these trips including this one travel to multiple cities and, in some cases, multiple countries. It can be difficult if someone has a giant unorganized suitcase. Not to mention that souvenirs are a must! By reading the itinerary beforehand, it is easy to see exactly what is needed. Also, when you're traveling abroad, it is always best to keep an open mind and have a go with the flow attitude. Sometimes the weather is not cooperating or flights get delayed/cancelled and activities cannot be done that day. It can be difficult especially if it’s something that has been anticipated, but the best way to fight that disappointment is to have an open mind in the first place, which is something I had to learn.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>I always like telling people about me experience abroad and I love sharing what I learned while in Thailand.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend Travel For Teens to others? Why?</h3>
<p>I would definitely recommend Travel for Teens for anyone who wants to travel internationally or domestically with a packed itinerary and making connections all over the world!</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>When I was younger I had gone overseas to Europe and really enjoyed being immersed in a different culture and meeting new people which inspired me to take travel into my own hands and find programs to gain a few miles on my soul, and volunteering to to make a positive impact on the world was an added bonus I got with my programs. One day the staff even arranged for an extra activity: Sunset yoga on the beach.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3><p>Throughout the program the staff was constantly making sure we had the best time, helping with any problems, answering questions, making activities for us to do, and to get us immersed into the culture while bringing the group together.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>The only qualm I have with the trip is that it wasn't longer, I wish that we could have stayed in the Thai islands longer and gone to more of them as well as having more time at elephant sanctuaries to volunteer and help out.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>Each day in the program was at least slightly different, we had a few travel days where we would spend the majority on a plane or bus. But each day we would start early, eating a breakfast normally at the hotel, to go out either scuba diving, volunteer work, explore temples, or rafting.&nbsp; We normally would only stop for lunch and small breaks. After a few more hours we would return to the hotel to get refreshed for about an hour before heading off to dinner.&nbsp; Then we would have some time in town usually for shopping at markets, and on the islands we would take walks on the beach to play in the shallow surf and just explore whatever town we were in at the time.</p><figure class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto3-daily-1513063817.jpg" alt="Watching the sunrise in Pai, Thailand"><figcaption class="caption"><p>My Friend and I Watching the Sunrise From our Hotel Room In Pai</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3><p>During our free time when we weren't out exploring temples, hanging out at markets, and caring for elephants, we would relax in the city whether that just be shopping around the hotel, taking a walk on the beach, staying at the hotel to have a group activity, or taking a moment to catch a couple minutes of sleep before the next adventure.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>We had multiple accommodations throughout the trip, but all were comfortable and all but one of the places we stayed in had internet so we could keep family back home updated.&nbsp; We stayed in the middle of the jungle for an overnight rafting trip which is the one accommodation we didn't have internet at, but the bamboo huts and fun rapids definitely made up for it.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>Every person going into my program should know that they should be prepared for almost 17 days of nonstop experiences, so don't expect a lot of downtime where you stay at a hotel, expect to be on the move constantly doing something.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto4-daily-1513063885.jpg" alt="Yoga on Sunset Beach in Koh Tao, Thailand"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Sunset Beach Yoga on Koh Tao</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>My trip has shown me that there are opportunities for adventure everywhere and I just have to seize every opportunity I get to live life to the fullest and not just let it pass me by.</p><h3>Would you recommend Travel For Teens to others? It was enough to make me feel like I was no longer in the United States, but there was not a large amount of culture shock either. Overall I highly recommend Australia and New Zealand to those who are traveling on their own for the first time for these reasons.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3><p>My counselors were incredible. They were very on top of flight and hotel accommodations. We sometimes even got extra deals on our excursions.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>I wish I had bought more souvenirs. I generally try to reserve my money, but on the trip of a lifetime, it is okay to splurge a little more than usual.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>There were two types of days: excursion days and travel days. On an excursion day, we would get up fairly early because there was always a lot to do!&nbsp; We would have one main excursion for the day that everybody participated in. This was always followed by some time to break off into groups and explore, especially when we were in the cities. Sometimes in the evening there would be more optional activities we were able to choose from. The night always concluded with fun late night chats in our rooms as bonding experiences. One would assume travel days would be boring, since most of the day would be spent at the airport. However, because we grew so close, travel days were some of the best. It did not matter when the plane arrived or when we boarded. When it was available though, I loved staying up with my friends and just getting to know them better. It was so exciting to meet people from all over the country and learn about how their lives were different than mine. In addition, we played a lot of billiards.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>Sometimes we stayed in nice hotels, other times we stayed in hostels or bed and breakfast-type places. I liked the bed and breakfast-type places the best because those were where we got to spend the most time with each other. There would be big common rooms with couches and games for us to all hang out in. While the hotels were technically nicer, we were confined to our few roommates as opposed to the whole group. I also loved that we got to switch up our roommates every time we traveled somewhere new to make sure we got to spend time with everyone.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>Everyone should know how to be an efficient packer. First of all, there was a lot of moving around, so it would be wise to not bring 4 different bags that you are responsible for. That's a lot of weight to bring to multiple different airports. Also, the weather there was difficult to prepare for. In some regions, we required sweatshirts, scarves, and gloves. In others, we were tanning in our bathing suits. It has gone so far as to affect my career; I want to do something with my life that allows me to travel with work as opposed to only taking vacations. My time abroad has also taught me how to take advantage of more opportunities. In Australia, my go-to phrase was "Yes." I tried everything, even if I was a little nervous, because I knew I might never get the chance to do that activity again. That mindset has transpired into my everyday life as well.</p><h3>Would you recommend your Travel For Teens to others? Why?</h3><p>I would absolutely recommend both the Australia trip and Travel for Teens. As a new college student, I have a lot more responsibilities than I did in high school. Going abroad was a great way for me to see what it was like on my own in an unfamiliar place, but with some guidance. It acted as a great stepping stone that I think every single high school student should experience before really going off on their own for the first time. I recommend Australia for the culture shock reasons I mentioned previously in the first question. I loved Travel for Teens because of their amazing and accommodating staff and their thrilling choice of activities.</p>

Then we get on a bus and head off to either the first tourism activity of the day, or we head off to service. Then we find somewhere to eat for lunch, have a little downtime at the hotel, then head back out for another service activity or tourism activity. Then we head to dinner and then out to the night markets.</p><p>After the nightly activity we come back to the hotel and have evening circle which is a really fun opportunity to share our experiences throughout the day, bond, and play games. After that we are sent off to bed and sometimes we hang out in someone's room until we get too tired, then head to sleep. That's usually a typical day in the cities and in Cambodia, but it also can vary depending on the type of place we're in like in Halong Bay.&nbsp; The structure was a little different, but very similar and just as much fun.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I enjoyed hanging out with my friends in their rooms or in the pools. What did you like best about it? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Our accommodations were always safe and clean. You definitely can't be the type of person who wants a five star resort while going on this trip, but the accommodations all had clean showers and air conditioning, which I felt was most important for me.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Be open to everyone on the trip. If everyone becomes friends it&rsquo;s much more fun than if you are being immature and creating drama. No one on these trips is interested in drama, everyone just wants to meet new people and explore the country, and if you try to be the one to start drama people won't appreciate it. ARCC is a very loving place and exclusive relationships aren't tolerated. This program includes everyone and everyone who goes will have a good time. You also have to be willing to get a little dirty and venture out of your comfort zone. I made so many new best friends and I am actually meeting with one this week! I had been going through a rough time in my life and traveling was always my dream. By following this dream it completely changed my perspective on things and made me a much happier person. I left feeling like I could do anything and achieve anything. I wouldn't change my experience for the world.</p><h3>Would you recommend ARCC to others? Why? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I would 100 percent recommend ARCC to everyone. There is a trip for everyone and it is incredibly organized and well run. I have no complaints about ARCC and it really was the most positive experience of my life.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I really wanted to make a difference in a community that really needed it, and ARCC's clean water initiative in Cambodia/ Vietnam seemed like the perfect chance to do so. I also really wanted to experience a culture unlike anything I'd ever seen before, without my parents always by my side.</p><h3>Why did you choose ARCC? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>ARCC had wonderful reviews, and that's how I initially choose to go with their company. Everyone smiled and waved as you passed them, whether you were on a boat or in a car or riding a moped! As for Vietnam, HaLong Bay was extremely tranquil- the tropical turquoise waters and warm sand was absolutely wonderful.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I've never worked with a group of teenagers who worked together as well as my ARCC trip did. By the second day of the trip, we were having slumber parties in each other's rooms, and buying matching "my country, my beer" t-shirts. They were always willing to answer our questions, and loved exploring. In addition, we had a local tour guide (named Vey) who was amazing in every possible way. He was a little man with a kind heart, who loved to joke around &amp; was very knowledgeable about Cambodia.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>I wish the trip was a bit longer, if I was being completely honest. Every other aspect was magical.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program. <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Every day started out the same, no matter if we were volunteering and building water filters, or exploring the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat. We would set a time the night before to meet up for breakfast, and the next morning we'd all show up at that time (and order delicious smoothies and fried rice). Then, as a group we'd head out to a day booked full of meaningful activities, interrupted at some point to eat at a local restaurant near our location at the time. Usually, we'd be able to go back to the hotel in the late afternoon, and have two hours to have personal time. We could swim (if the hotel had a pool), nap, shower, hang out, and sometimes even go explore in groups. After this, around 7, we'd go out to a delicious dinner as a group, usually ordering family style dishes and all sharing. The time after dinner depended on what the group wanted to do (we could explore some more, shop, get desert, etc.). Eventually before bed, we'd all gather around and talk together in a ritual known as "evening circle" where we could have meaningful talks about the day's activities and what we'd learned. After this the leaders went to bed, and the kids were able to go to bed when they pleased- usually hanging out and playing cards until the late hours of the night.</p><figure class="awesome-image left-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/3-1506922431.jpg" alt="International volunteers eating at the Peace Cafe, Cambodia"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Eating breakfast at the peace cafe</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I loved the giant slumber parties we threw constantly throughout the trip. We'd buy face masks and Cambodian junk foods, and watch hilariously cheesy Khamer soap operas. A majority of the girls had matching pajamas, which made it even more fun. Other than this, the whole entire group loved swimming, and it quickly became our favorite group activity.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?</h3><p>We stayed in multiple hotels, my favorite was on Cat Ba Island in Vietnam. This hotel was composed of an assortment of beach bungalows, only a few feet from the water. At every hotel, we were assigned roommates by the leaders, which was a great experience and helped everyone get very close, very fast.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>That you're going to cry at the end of the trip, because you'll have the best time of your life and won't want it to end. I also now understand the great privilege my parents have given me, and think about it constantly. This trip gave me a better outlook on life (mine in general), and has made me stop taking every day norms (such as showering or eating lunch) for granted.</p><h3>Would you recommend ARCC to others? Why? <span style="white-space: pre;">	</span></h3><p>Yes, most definitely!! It was absolutely magical, and ARCC had everything planned down to the hour. This being said, they gave us a good amount of independence to explore and be our own people. The type of people who participate in the ARCC programs are interesting, fun intellectuals from all around the world, who all share a common goal. Please, if you get a chance, do an international ARCC program. You won't regret it.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I got inspired to go abroad because I wanted to expand my worldview and I am deeply interested in seeing the politics/international relations of a country other than my own (the United States). I knew I always wanted to learn about another country, but I wanted to actually visit there to authentically learn about the country, rather than have American media teach me. I also got inspired because I want to prove to my community that studying abroad is an option, and that if you work hard then doors will open.</p><figure class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto2-figueroa-1507003532.jpg" alt="Santa Monica Pier in California"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Santa Monica Pier in California</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>Why did you choose Experiment in International Living's Leadership Institute to South Africa? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I chose the Experiment in International Living's Leadership Institute to South Africa because I've heard many things about its history that is very comparable to the United States. Apartheid was also fairly recent in that country, so I knew that I wanted to learn more about it since many people who lived during the Apartheid era are still living. I chose EIL because of their commitment to experiential learning which is different from the traditional class setting. I also chose EIL because of their mission to immerse us in the culture. EIL has facilitated a newfound love I have for South Africa!</p><h3>What was your favorite part about South Africa? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>My favorite part (which honestly is everything) part about South Africa was the rural homestay.&nbsp; I like this experience the most because it was the moment that made me realize that I had MUCH MORE privilege than what I previously thought I had before the trip. Many people from the household asked me "if it is easy to get a job in the United States" because they wanted to find a job. After answering their questions and going into deep conversations, I realized how lucky I am to be a citizen of the United States. Many other people look up to us and, as the son of immigrants, I have an even more respect for people who migrate from one place to another in search of a more secure future.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>What made my experience unique was the amazing people I was with! My group was very diverse and that gave way for many interesting stories to be brought to the table. We had many very intellectual discussions in which we all agreed that in the end it is freedom and human rights that shall prevail!</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program? <span style="white-space: pre;">	</span></h3><p>They helped a lot! In the beginning I was intimidated and I thought that I knew less than my peers about peace, politics, and human rights. I gradually started to voice out more and I became comfortable doing so!</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program. <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>This would vary a lot but typically I would wake up and go to an excursion (to the South African SIT office, correction facility, museum, gallery, lecture, meet someone influential, etc), eat lunch, go to another excursion, have dinner, and go to sleep.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I enjoyed looking at the views and having time to talk with my friends. What did you like best about it? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>The accommodation varied: it was either game lounges, hotels (one was by the beach), rural homestay, or urban homestay. I liked the large variety of accommodation types. It gave me time to reflect on the disparaging inequality that occurred in South Africa.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?</h3><p>This is a program that you should apply to only if you are passionate about peace, politics, and human rights, and/or creating change in your community. If you are looking for "just another impressive activity to put in your resume", then this is NOT for you.</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>It has made me become more aware of the prevailing issues of economic inequality, racism, political oppression, American interventionism, post colonial problems, etc. in both the world and in the United States .</p><h3>Would you recommend EIL to others? Why? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>YES ! I would highly recommend this program and provider to others because this program bring out the passion for social justice and leadership. The people, history, and culture in South Africa is very interesting and the Experiment in International Living will do well in ensuring you will be with an AMAZING group.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3><p>I've always loved traveling, meeting new people and experimenting with new cultures. I decided to go abroad to understand better the responsibility I have as an individual and my place in the world. I wanted to learn more about our evolving and changing society, and have the opportunity to work and team up with different people that share opposite and similar perspectives.</p><h3>Which city was your favorite among all the locations you visited?</h3><p>My group and I were moving constantly from place to place, so I got to see a lot of different countries, cultures and lifestyles. It offered traveling, experiential learning, new experiences, and community.</p><blockquote>It was one of the greatest adventures of my life.</blockquote><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?</h3><p>Everyday we did something new and unexpected, and I think this is where the uniqueness of my experience fits. Although they were better days of course, everyday was unique and wonderful. Another component that definitely contributed to the experience being so special was the group and the feeling of adventure, adaptability, and challenge that's behind it.</p><h3>What surprised you most about the countries you visited?</h3><p>I had a lot of thoughts and surprises during the year. There's no lie when I say that each country was very different and they all have their own traits that make them unique and amazing. But, although they all have different ecosystems, political orientations, histories, and religions, I was impressed by how similar we all live as humans. How simple or complicated life can be. It surprised me how everything is connected and related, and yet, we see the world based on differences instead of similarities. It was also interesting to see different lifestyles and ideas of success; it can change drastically from one place to another.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3><p>The local staff that helped us was great. An experience.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.</h3><p>This is what's great: we didn't have typical days! We didn't have set routines. We just had to wake up, eat, and be prepared for something awesome, unexpected, boring, great, amazing, challenging, or immersive to happen! Every week we did something new, something different, and something worth learning.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?</h3><p>Wander around, find hidden cozy little caf&eacute;s, read a book, sleep, or have nice conversations with my friends.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?<span style="white-space: pre;">	</span></h3><p>We had all sorts of accommodations, from camping tents to hotels to overnight trains and buses. What I liked the most was the adaptability we had to have in order to feel at home everywhere we went.</p><h3>Do you have any advice for future participants of your program?</h3><p>It's challenging and difficult, but also really rewarding. You have to be very open minded, flexible, positive, and adaptable. You will do something different everyday and, of course, you won't love everything, but this is part of the adventure and the whole learning experience.</p><h3>What was the hardest part about spending a year abroad?</h3><p>At first, I was scared of living permanently with people that share a different nationality from mine. I thought it was going to be really hard to integrate and share my views. I felt a little nervous and uncertain, but these questions and fears went away really quickly when I met the group. Although most of them shared a nationality and a language, they were very different and special. I realized I could adapt very easily to what was coming next.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered"><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto3-mallarino-1500471763.jpg" alt="Winterline Volunteer in Costa Rica"><figcaption class="caption">Making sauce and learning product making at Earth University, Costa Rica</figcaption></figure><h3>What is one thing you wish you would have known before spending a gap year abroad?</h3><p>Before leaving home, based on the education you received and the environment you grew up in, you accumulate certain ideas, views, principles, and goals. You put a sense of belonging to each of these, and you find examples or situations to justify them and to relate to them. When you think of going abroad, you picture yourself in certain scenarios based on those ideas you have and you create a plan. It's obvious that if you leave, you're eventually going to create more experiences and memories, and you'll face more challenges.</p><p>When you encounter these new situations, those ideas that you had before WILL change. You will share some, change many, and destroy several. Learn to do that and be aware of those changes, but let them be accordingly. I wish I knew this is how you grow, change, and learn.</p><h3>Do you have any packing tips for individuals headed to multiple countries with different climates during their trip abroad?</h3><p>It's really hard to pack for different climates and different cultural dress codes. Find yourself a backpack that allows you to separate clothing and stay organized; it helps with packing and unpacking everywhere you go and helps you lose less things along the way. Although, if you want to be really fashionable and change your clothes constantly, you can probably just buy what you need everywhere you go and donate or recycle/up-cycle your old clothes.</p><p>Oh also, the fact that you're going to different climates doesn't necessarily mean you need two or more full, new wardrobes. You can wear a t-shirt everywhere you go, just make sure you're carrying a jacket for cold weather. Last, but not least, regardless of the weather, don't forget a journal, pen, book, and a camera; those are my essentials.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered"><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto4-mallarino-1500471783.jpg" alt="Girls on a dock by a lake"><figcaption class="caption">Graduation day, Boston</figcaption></figure><h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of going on a gap year abroad is?</h3><p>You gain so much when you leave and discover things by yourself. When you're in different environments, situations. When you have to eat different food and use different means of transportation. Everyone finds their own words to label those benefits and specific situations to prove that. Personally, it gave me more clarity, certitude and a perspective that I wouldn't trade for anything. I met incredible people, lived in wonderful places and created fantastic and memorable moments that, somehow, make me who I am today. Is there anything more beneficial than that?</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3><p>I view things differently knowing how people live all over the world. Knowing that my people and my environment is not the only one I should care for. I still have no words to describe how I've changed exactly, but I know I have and I know I'll keep changing for the next 10 years or more.</p><h3>Would you recommend your program to others? Why?</h3><p>Depends on who asks me, of course, but yes! I'd definitely recommend it because it is the best thing that has happened to me. It has changed my life in so many ways I can't even explain it.</p><h3>If you could go abroad again, where would you go?</h3><p>Hard to choose when you have around 200 destinations. Although I can't lie, I've always been interested in Uganda, Kenya, and Myanmar, but Per&uacute;, Bolivia, and Argentina too. Oh, forgot the Philippines, Vietnam, and Australia!</p>
