A Guide to Summer Community Service Programs for High School Students
Popular Places for Summer Volunteer Programs
Your parents and friends are equally dumbfounded and in awe of your desire to do something productive with your life this summer. But where are you going to go? Do you have a passport? If not, you better get busy with your application because where you’re going, your pool pass isn’t going to get you there! Here’s some popular places for summer community service programs for high school students.
Latin America. This region has some of the best destinations for teenage volunteer summer programs. Mexico is home to one of the new seven wonders of the world (Chichén Itza), dozens of biosphere reserves, monarch butterflies, coral reefs, volcanoes, spectacular beaches, and a world-renowned cuisine. Costa Rica is known for its beautiful beaches and tropical rainforests. You could also explore the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, volcanic lakes, the Andes' mountainous terrain, or the Amazon jungle.
Asia. If you want experience an Asian flair during your summer abroad, consider a volunteer program in Thailand or China. Temples, shrines, and spiritual retreats may come to mind when you think of Thailand, but it’s also known for its islands, mountains, and everything in between for you to explore. China is quite similar but on a larger scale! Immerse yourself in China’s extensive history in the country known as “The Land of Abundance.”
Africa. How about an African safari on your days off? When you’re looking at summer community service programs for high school students, that is definitely a possibility! Venture to Kruger Park and the Table Mountain in Cape Town in South Africa. Explore the Serengeti National park or climb Mount Kilimanjaro when you volunteer in Tanzania. Traverse the Sahara desert by camel or 4 x4 when you volunteer in Morocco.
Types of Teenage Volunteer Summer Programs
What will be your main focus while volunteering abroad on teenage volunteer summer programs? Deciding on one of the many teenage volunteer summer programs that will work for you will take some legwork, but there are plenty to choose from depending on your interests and goals. Think beyond summer and consider what field you plan to study in college. What type of program will look good on your college apps?
Maybe you want to be a teacher “when you grow up.” What better way to gain some experience and see if you have what it takes to lead and mentor than to work with children in a foreign country? By spending time with children in a disadvantaged country, playing games, helping with homework, or just spending quality one-on-one time with them, you’ll make you a valuable asset and change you for the better on the inside.
If saving the earth is your passion, consider a conservation volunteer program. Imagine living and volunteering in Latin America in one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Spend your days monitoring wildlife, working on reforestation efforts, and preserving and restoring delicate ecosystems. And in your free time, hang out on the beach — enjoy snorkeling, swimming, surfing, or relaxing with a good book.
Volunteering abroad will no doubt be mentally challenging, but it can also be physically challenging. If you enjoy being in the sun and are not afraid of getting your hands dirty, bulk up your biceps and work on your tan while volunteering in a summer program abroad in construction. Your efforts can make a lasting difference in the lives of the people you’re helping when you spend your summer helping to rebuild schools, homes, and communities who are struggling to recover after natural disasters.
Accommodation Options
Typical accommodations for teenage volunteer summer programs for high school students are homestays. By living with a homestay family, you’ll have someone to help you with your every need while your parents are on the other side of the world. You’ll have some security and a place to call “home.” Perks of living with a homestay family include home cooked authentic meals, language immersion, personal tour guide, free laundry, and best of all, the potential to make a lifelong connection with a family abroad. No two homestay experiences are the same and depend greatly on the country you choose.
Visas for Summer Volunteering
A passport and return ticket are required in order to enter most countries for an extended stay for the majority of summer community service programs for high school students. Whether or not a visa is required usually depends on your country of origin. Some countries are not required to have a visa; however, travelers from certain other countries must obtain a passport and visa prior to entry. It all really depends where you’re leaving from and where you’re going, so do your research. Check out the GoAbroad Embassy Directory for more detailed and up-to-date information.
