Marine Research (Marine Studies) Internship

Creative, colorful, and exciting. These are some of the best words from feedback for the Institute for Global Studies' marine research projects. IGS is an industry leader and has been placing students in Hawaii, Palau, Fiji, Australia, Thailand, and the mainland United States since 1995. IGS has run semester-long field studies that included turtle research in Hawaii, fish monitoring in Fiji, and Great Barrier Reef coral studies in Australia. IGS customized internships match the individual with university researchers with the goal of creating a high-quality marine learning experience. In Fiji, past students have laid transects in marine protected areas to help monitor fish populations, focusing on reef indicator species like the triggerfish. In Palau, Micronesia, students have worked with researchers from the University of Sydney on fish ecology and reef health. In Hawaii, students have worked with world-renowned scientists in the lab to study coral ecology and health. In Sydney, Australia, students have worked at a major university fish laboratory, conducting experiments primarily on fish behavior and publishing their works in academic journals.

New Zealand & Fiji Summer Program | Pacific Discovery

This program for individuals ages 17-22 has just the right balance of adventure and environmental service in New Zealand, followed by the laid-back island living in Fiji. In New Zealand, we'll mountain bike in Rotorua, raft over the world's highest commercial waterfall, stay in a sacred Maori house, and connect deeply with nature during an environmental service. We'll work alongside park rangers, search for the elusive kiwi bird, plant native trees, get hands-on with local ecology and wildlife, and camp under brilliant starry night skies. The Polynesian legacy is the development of seafaring and navigation skills and canoe technology that enabled them to voyage across the Pacific Ocean. We journey across the Pacific to Fiji, immersing in authentic village life on Vatulele Island.

Turtle conservation project in Costa Rica

Costa Rica's Turtle Conservation Project was one thing I will never forget! Such an eye opening and amazing experience. The IHQV program is an amazing way to explore the world in a feasible way. Not only is it affordable but I would have never experienced anything like it! IHQV Brings so much more, more ham any guided tour, more than a resort, and more than anything you could experience on your own. They have demonstrated such strong dedication to make sure every part of the trip is a great learning exprenice while keeping it fun. One of my most memeroble moments would be seeing the indangered leather back turtle lay her eggs. Because the leather back is in such danger it is critical that her eggs are gathered and re-nested in the hatchery where they can be taken care of and monitered to keep them safe from predators. I was lucky enough to be able to personally collect her eggs and dig a new nest to place each egg carfully. It was truley an amazing experience. I wish I could go back to see them hatch! Not only was this such an amazing experience, but every single person I met on this trip through the program m, I will dearly miss. IHQV brings everyone with similar ambitions together and from all over the world. I loved to meet people from the UK, Australia and Italy. Never could I go anywhere and meet such amazing people in one single place. I would recommend this program a million times. Leaving was hard, I'll miss my friends I have made and most importantly all the work that was done everyday to help such a wonderful project!
