A Guide to Gap Year in Namibia
Popular Locations
Located along the Atlantic Ocean, Namibia features stunning landscapes of every kind, from the sandy dunes of Sossusvlei to the grassy plains of Kalahari, and from coastal cities to the Naukluft Mountains. Gap year travelers will also find that there is an ever-present German influence found in all of the big cities, creating a colonial vibe mixed with traditional Africa.
Windhoek is Namibia’s capital city. Some say the city is too Western; after all, it is a modern, well-groomed metropolis with busy roads, a city skyline, and German castles (what?!). While it may not feel like iconic Africa, it is the perfect place to start or end your gap year in Namibia. Fly into Windhoek to ease into the African lifestyle, or take a break from the wild to get a taste of urban African buzz.
Swakopmund is Namibia’s adventure capital. This seaside city still features German influence, architecture, and Gemütlichkeit (German hospitality), but it is also the best launching pad for wild African explorations. Make Swakopmund your home base, while you venture outside the city limits to discover the Skeleton Coast or the Namib Desert that gave the country its name. Visit the famous Moon Landscape, or chill out in town for a coastal holiday.
Luderitz, located between the barren Namib Desert and the sunny south Atlantic coast, is one of the most bizarre places in Africa. The city is surreally German, radiating the culture through its art, architecture, Bavarian villages, and German bakeries with the most delicious streuselkuchen (streusel cake) you’ll find in Africa! While at times you may feel like you’re spending a gap year in a time warp, you’ll have plenty of time to see authentic Africa (think safaris at Sperrgebiet National Park!).
Popular Activities
Most gap year travelers come to Namibia for the excitement, to become one with nature and the extreme wildlife that roams the land. Travelers on gap year programs in Namibia will have plenty of opportunities to break out of their comfort zone while learning about the fascinating environment and culture. Whether you want to run with wild rhinos, help preserve them, or study their environment, you can find it all on a gap year in Namibia.
Volunteer. Namibia was one of the first African countries to take part in environmental conservation, which means travelers can find plenty of volunteer placements in this field. Volunteer in the Namib Desert, helping with rhino or elephant conservation, or on a game reserve with protected wildlife. Other popular placements include teaching and health care, where volunteers can empower locals with knowledge.
Adventure Travel. Namibia features all of the wildlife you associate with Africa. Travelers will find lions chasing plains game, the largest population of free-range rhinos in Africa, and more elephants than people. Animal lovers can safari through the Etosha National Park, Damaraland, and the Caprivi Strip to experience African wildlife in their natural habitat, while adventure seekers can sand board in the tallest sand dunes, snorkel through Skeleton Island shipwrecks, or sea kayak while seals bark from the coasts. Get your adrenaline fix during the day so you can relax under starry skies at night.
Study. What better way to understand Namibia than by learning about their culture and history! Spend your gap year studying abroad, and you will be able to deepen your knowledge of civil rights, humanitarian projects, and African politics and history. Take university classes with locals or join a study abroad program with American-style courses. Either way, you’ll be taught in English!
Everything Else You Need to Know About Gap Years in Namibia
Costs. Whether you want to spend a few weeks or an entire year abroad, most travelers will be able to afford their dream gap year in Namibia. Your plane ticket will be the biggest expense while planning your gap year abroad, as on-the-ground prices are relatively affordable. City prices are known to be higher; in fact, they can climb up to standard US prices, but rural areas are dirt cheap. Stick to fresh produce and traditional Namibian foods. If you’re staying long-term, think about packing toiletries and other necessities to cut down on paying for expensive imported goods.
Accommodation. Finding a place to rest your head will be part of the adventure as you gap year in Namibia. Housing options vary depending on the type of program and your location. Students in the cities can find apartments or share houses to live with other travelers and students, while volunteers may live in more rural areas in a home stay with no running water. If you’re really adventurous, you’ll be in heaven camping and star gazing each night.
Visas. Most will need a visa for their gap year in Namibia, but the process is different depending on your program. Volunteers will require a work visa, while students will require a study permit. Some will need a temporary residence permit for stays longer than two weeks. It is always best to talk with your program organizer about the appropriate applications and visa process for up-to-date information and a smooth transition.
Safety. Compared to other African countries, Namibia is a fairly safe location for a gap year abroad. Travelers should still be aware of their surroundings, especially when exploring the great outdoors. Pack your sunblock, wear a hat to protect you from the hot African sun, and be careful not to get caught in a rhino stampede!
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
While most international travel will force you to face language barriers, one of Namibia’s official languages is English. You may find local dialects in rural areas, but it will be fairly easy to communicate with locals, especially in the cities. Try to learn some key phrases in the local dialects, like Afrikaans, so you can communicate with the locals and connect even deeper with the culture.
While most will come to Namibia for an adventure, it may be difficult to adjust to wild Africa. If it’s your first time sleeping in a tent or living out of a backpack, you may experience a culture shock, but in the end the experience will make you thrive. Spending a gap year in Namibia will get you off the grid for a travel experience like no other!
There is something about Namibia that grabs hold of travelers. The country’s culture, lifestyle, and adventure will sink deep into your bones and make a lasting impact. Gap year programs in Namibia are the perfect opportunity to challenge you. Observe the land where humans first walked and buckle up for an adventure of a lifetime!

My project in Namibia
August 12, 2024by: Emily Ormond - United KingdomI have recently come back from my gap year and while I was there I spent a month working on the relationships between humans and elephants. So why would I recommend Oyster? I am so glad I picked to do this project with Oyster because they made me feel very well taken care of and looked after me before and during the project. They talk you though everything you need to know before the project takes place and what clothes and necessities you may need to pack. So what does the project consist of? I would do this project a million times if I could, and if you don’t believe me lots of people who were doing the project had already done it before and had come back because of how much they enjoyed it. So the project is on a two week program and you have the option to stay from two weeks to 3 months. The first week is amazing because you build walls for the local community. Some days some of the locals will come and help, or a few kids will come and keep you company, that is amazing because you feel so immersed, it’s definitely a once in a lifetime experience. The second week is spent tracking elephants. This was my favourite out of the two because you learn all about the elephants foot prints. We also managed to see a two day old elephant which we were lucky enough to name !!! So why pick this project? I think this project and Oyster have a lot of selling points. For starters Oyster takes very good care of you and help you organise yourself before the project starts so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Secondly you are in the middle of the desert, I don’t think you could get anymore rural than that. You don’t really have much service so it’s lovely to disconnect for two weeks. You get to spend some time with lovely people who you may not meet on a day to day basis, people from different countries, locals, and different ages. You camp under the stars which is also amazing. Overall I would always recommend this amazing project, such a special experience!!
Wonderful to read about your experience, thank you Emily! The Oyster Team
Amazing experience. Professional and helpful company.
June 30, 2023by: Bailey Crossland - EnglandThe last few weeks I have been travelling around South East Asia with Oyster Worldwide, completing my Gold The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. This has been a truly once in a lifetime experience, meeting many new people from all around the world and learning about the Asian culture and lifestyle. From volunteering at an ethical elephant sanctuary in Chaing Mai, Thailand to partying on a yacht in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, I enjoyed every second of it. Oyster Worldwide have been super professional and helpful throughout the whole experience and made a complex and daunting trip, a breeze in the park!

Sounds like you made the most of your time Bailey and had a wonderful tour - thanks for sharing!
Teaching in Chile
August 06, 2019by: Amy Green - United KingdomI had a really great time as a volunteer teaching assistant at a school in Coyhaique, Chile. I was teaching a huge range of ages (4-17) and it was great to be able to interact with classes at various stages of their English development. The teachers I was supporting were amazing and very eager for the help, particularly with the younger years and keeping their interest. I absolutely loved my time living with my host family as they were so welcoming. Being able to speak a little Spanish already definitely helped my integration but they were also incredibly helpful in helping me improve and understanding of my many mistakes! Coyhaique in itself is a smallish town with not too much to offer however there are two national parks surrounding it with some good hikes. It is easy to travel out of Coyhaique by bus (just book in advance) either going north or south and getting to Balmaceda airport is also simple should you wish to go further afield. Having people on the ground in Coyhaique was encouraging as you knew you had support should you need it but we didn't interact much. The Spanish lessons were fine but I feel they would be more helpful to someone of a lower level, as for me, I just needed to practice speaking so the best thing was just being with my host family! Overall a good experience and I'm so glad I did it.
Thank you so much for leaving a review!
Best decision I ever made!
February 01, 2019by: Lauren Underhill - United KingdomI had just finished my A Levels and wasn’t sure whether uni was an option for me - so a gap year was on the cards. My friend and I had a passion for animals so decided to go on a trip to see some of the worlds most magnificent. After lots of research, Oysters promise of responsible travel and support was what made us sure they were the best company to go with. I went to South Africa for 4 weeks to volunteer as a wildlife conservationist with the Big 5. I cannot even begin to describe how much I loved the programme. I got to see and experience a culture and lifestyle I never thought possible, made life long friends all over the world and have memories to last a life time. Oyster provided non-stop support as soon as I applied until the very moment I returned home. It would take me a whole book to write all the amazing things I saw and experienced and why Oyster Worldwide was the best choice - cliché as it sounds, taking a gap year with Oyster was the best decision I have ever made and I cannot wait to get on a plane to another one of their awesome projects.
Many thanks for taking the time to review us!

Oyster Team
