IGS has placed students in some of the world’s most exciting museums. Our internship placements typically fall into two categories: working on the floor or conducting research and marketing behind the scenes. Floor work includes assisting the docent in the setup and interpretation of current exhibits and galleries. This may include constructing backdrops and computer modeling. Once the exhibit is in place, you are asked to learn the history of the showcased items and share your knowledge with the visiting public. Behind-the-scenes work may include conducting original research on life histories or local historical events. This may include online research and library visits. Likewise, you may be asked to conduct interviews in the community and record knowledge that is in danger of being lost forever. Duties are usually associated with the following: Set up exhibits Conduct online research Interpret for the public Interview local residents Write for the museum’s website Social media outreach

Made up of many varied regions, Mexico makes up 1/5 of the United States. The weather, culture, and geography can differ per region. The mountains dividing the country help keep each region's culture intact by making it difficult for outside influencers to spread. Architectural sites and traditional celebrations are enjoyed by locals and volunteers alike. Since United Planet is a member of the ICYE (International Cultural Youth Exchange), you'll be hosted by an organization associated with ICYE. Your host is Siijuve, a nonprofit that has been at work since 1965 to help international volunteers get involved in local activities.

If you’re not so artsy, many gap year programs in Mexico City are ideal for study abroad and language immersion.
Spend time during your gap year in Mexico City to stroll the cobblestone streets of the Zocalo, the city’s historic center plaza. Tread lightly—underneath your feet lies the Aztec city built in 1325, where Spaniards later erected the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral and National Palace. Need to escape the city life? Take a gondola ride on the river canals of Xochimilco. Hungry? Eat delicious tacos el pastor or carnitas. If you’re up for the challenge, take your amigos to the markets and barter for bags of chile covered crickets.
