Art Gap Year Programs After College in Italy

IGS has placed students in some of the world’s most exciting museums. Our internship placements typically fall into two categories: working on the floor or conducting research and marketing behind the scenes. Floor work includes assisting the docent in the setup and interpretation of current exhibits and galleries. This may include constructing backdrops and computer modeling. Once the exhibit is in place, you are asked to learn the history of the showcased items and share your knowledge with the visiting public. Behind-the-scenes work may include conducting original research on life histories or local historical events. This may include online research and library visits. Likewise, you may be asked to conduct interviews in the community and record knowledge that is in danger of being lost forever. Duties are usually associated with the following: Set up exhibits Conduct online research Interpret for the public Interview local residents Write for the museum’s website Social media outreach

Spend 12 inspiring weeks exploring Barcelona, Rome, and Paris—three of Europe’s most iconic cities. This immersive semester blends cultural discovery, local language learning, and once-in-a-lifetime adventures with a supportive travel community. In Barcelona (Weeks 1–4), learn conversational Spanish and practice over tapas, flamenco nights, and a day trip to Costa Brava. In Rome (Weeks 5–8), pick up Italian phrases while exploring ancient ruins, making pasta and gelato with chefs, and visiting Pompeii. In Paris (Weeks 9–12), build confidence in French while admiring art at the Louvre, tasting pastries, strolling Montmartre, and diving into fashion and design. Throughout your journey, you’ll live in EF student residences, travel with your cohort, and join weekly cultural activities and weekend excursions. With included flights, accommodations, EF’s global support, and optional college credit, European Horizons is more than study abroad—it’s a chance to grow, connect, and experience Europe like never before.

This 6-week Gap Year Course travels through Italy three times a year—Spring (January to early March), Early Summer (April to June), and Autumn (October to December). You will visit Venice, Castelfranco Bologna, Florence, Siena, and Roma, with day trips to San Gimignano, Verona, Naples, and Pompei. We use art and architecture to cover all subjects, be it history, art history, philosophy, politics, music and literature. For AHA, teaching students how to form a "habit" of creativity is something we take very seriously. This is why we have numerous creative sessions incorporated, allowing students to experiment with watercolors, sketching, creative writing, paper marbling, rowing in the Venice Canal, cooking classes, etc. We hope to help students form new ideas and have the confidence to articulate them. Our Gap Year is a wonderfully ambitious program with interests that spread from the ancient world in Rome and Naples to the Renaissance in Florence and contemporary art in Venice. You will learn about Leonardo, appreciate Titian, and understand why we should know about Michelangelo.
