South Africa Photo Safari

Join us for a wild photographic adventure in South Africa! You'll have close encounters with big cats, elephants, rhinos, and plenty more wildlife while exploring a stunning private game reserve in the Greater Kruger Area. You'll be accompanied by a professional wildlife photographer, who will offer tutoring – both in theory and practical sessions – throughout the workshop, so you can expect to end up with an impressive portfolio of wildlife images. This wildlife photography workshop is based in Timbavati, an exclusive collection of private game reserves, where game viewing is among the best on the African continent. We'll have the freedom to go off-road. With the guidance of expert guides and trackers, you're guaranteed to find animals such as leopards, lions, and buffalo. You can also observe and photograph them up close. We work in small groups (a maximum of 5 people), which means you'll enjoy personalized photographic tutoring and you can make sure to improve your skills along the way. It's a dream trip for any (aspiring) wildlife photographer!

Volunteer: Reptile and Amphibian Research

The reptile and amphibian diversity of the Sterkspruit Nature Reserve, located outside the town of Mashishing in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, has not been quantitatively assessed. The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, in collaboration with the management of Sterkspruit Nature Reserve, has commissioned ABRE to conduct and finance a herpetological assessment for the protected area. The protected area primarily encompasses mountainous grassland habitat and rocky outcrops. This project centers around the daily inspection of pitfall and funnel trap arrays, which are accessed by hiking across the terrain. As such, prospective volunteers will need to be fit. Day time active searches and nocturnal frogging are conducted after pitfall and funnel trap array checks. The survey runs over three weeks (21 days) between December 1st and 21st. Five volunteers are admitted each week (December 1-7, 8-14, and 15-21), and volunteers are welcome to book for more than one week. Accommodation consists of tents and are included in the price of participation. This project is specifically priced to allow South African students to participate.

Kruger National Park Birding

Explore the exceptional bird life of the southern Kruger National Park on a dedicated birding safari. Located in one of South Africa’s premier wildlife destinations, this safari offers the perfect blend of scenic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and prime bird-watching opportunities. Kruger’s mix of bushveld, riverine forest, and open savanna supports an astonishing variety of bird species. Berg-en-Dal lies in the southwestern corner of the park and is known for its varied terrain. This ecological variety attracts a wide array of bird species. Skukuza, the park’s largest rest camp, serves as a hub for birding and wildlife observation. Its proximity to rivers and mixed woodland makes it an ideal location to spot both common and elusive bird species. Birding highlights in the area include the Lilac-breasted Roller, a favorite among photographers; the Southern Ground Hornbill, known for its size and red facial skin; the Hamerkop, famous for building enormous, intricate nests; and the Giant Kingfisher, Africa’s largest kingfisher species. With over 500 bird species recorded in Kruger, this region offers unparalleled birding opportunities.

The program not only met but far exceeded my expectations. The highlights were truly incredible, from the viewing of a cheetah making a kill and the treehouse session from the camp to the bushwalks and sundowners. I would recommend Penda, yes. Overall, Alan is a great photography guide and he made the whole holiday a great experience.
